Esther Yu Stars in Sports Drama “Road to Sucess”

Chinese actress Esther Yu Shuxin’s (虞書欣) popularity surged thanks to her performance alongside Ding Yuxi (丁禹兮) in Love Game in Eastern Fantasy <永夜星河>. The poor reception of her drama Ski Into Love <噓,國王在冬眠> with Lin Yi (林一) seem to have had little impact on her career.
Within a single week, Esther announced three new endorsement deals for a beverage brand, a snack line, and a travel app. Although not high-end luxury brands, these deals add up to a significant income, demonstrating her strong commercial appeal among actresses of her generation.
Having just wrapped up filming Speed and Love <雙軌>, Esther began filming her new drama Road to Success <燦如繁星> with actor Chen Jingke (陳靖可) in April. The story follows Esther, a dropout PhD student from a top university, and Chen Jingke, a coach who retired at the peak of his career. Together, they mentor a group of rebellious students, rekindling their love for soccer, striving for their college entrance exams, and pursuing their dreams. As they transform themselves, a romance blossoms between the two characters.
The series marks a second collaboration for Esther with Taiwanese director Gia Li (李青蓉), who previously directed Hidden Love <偷偷藏不住> and Ski Into Love. With Esther filming alongside 11 young actors in a sports-themed drama, the project is considered quite innovative and garnered strong support from its platform backers. The production is managed by the team behind Go Go Squid! <親愛的,熱愛的> and a professional football consultant was brought on board. However, the main concern remains the lack of interest in soccer in China and sports dramas typically struggle to attract viewers. The key question is whether the drama can bring a fresh take on the genre despite the challenges.
