Hou Minghao and Zhu Xudan Chase Truth in “Psych Hunter”

Mainland Chinese mystery thriller Psych Hunter <心宅猎人> is making heads spin with its intricate psychological worlds and symbolically designed settings. Starring new actors Neo Hou Minghao (侯明昊), Liu Dongqin (刘冬沁), and Bambi Zhu Xudan (祝绪丹), the team of three is receiving great love from the audience as they take lead in uncovering clues from peoples’ deepest psyches while battling evil forces. It achieved a 7.5-point rating on Douban, thereby demonstrating a positive reception.

Psych Hunter follows the story of Jiang Shuo (played by Minghao), who makes a living by buying and reselling haunted houses. Meeting psychologist Qin Yiheng (played by Dongqin) and the powerful and strong cop Yuan Muqing (played by Xudan) through a case, they strive to join hands to find the real identity behind the criminal with six fingers. Despite suffering from amnesia, Jiang Shuo has the ability to enter another person’s psyche. He uses his power to his full potential to find clues that can help them crack the case under time limits and mental restrictions. With Yiheng’s intelligence and Muqing’s physical capabilities, the three showcase an intense and passionate pursuit for truth and the criminal across time and space.

One of the drama’s highlights is the tight, thrilling storyline presented in an engaging manner. Such quality is thanks to the capable production team consisting of Yang Bei (杨蓓), Yu Fei (于飞), and Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚). While many may not be familiar with Yang Bei and Yu Fei, they have worked on the popular Once Upon A Time In Lingjian Mountain <从前有座剑灵山>. As for Xiaogang, he is known as the successful film director behind Assembly <集结号> and A World Without Thieves <天下无贼>.

Another aspect to look out for is its unconventional concepts and magnificent world-building, in which it can make something out of nothing. Psych Hunter skillfully envelops viewers with its well-crafted inner world where one’s dark secrets can become undone. An exquisitely made clock remains central to the world as it ties the characters from the psychological to the physical world.

Additionally, the costumes also align with the story’s setting and are equally eye-catching. Switching between a police uniform and a republican style Chinese dress, Xudan can look both sweet and heroic. Dongqin’s western suits and Minghao’s street-style fashion are also aesthetically pleasing as it reflects their different personalities.

    1. @m0m0 Hikaru No Go (the Chinese drama) is a great drama with a supernatural element to the central theme of Go (Chinese chess “wei qi”). All 36 episodes are subbed and available on iQIYI website and app.

The styling of the ghost Chu Ying was a big miss, but didn’t stop viewers from loving the character. No forced romance, but hilarious bromance/frenemies all the way! 🙂
