The 1987 Hong Kong film A Chinese Ghost Story <倩女幽魂>, starring Leslie Cheung (張國榮) as the debt collector Ning Choi-san and Joey Wong (王祖賢) as the ghost mistress Nip Siu-sin, popularized the Pu Songling (蒲松齡) fairytale about the forbidden love between a ghost and a human. The film, ranked 50th in the Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures, is regarded as one of the most classic films of all time.
So when it was announced that a television remake was in the works, fans were skeptical. Yesterday, a photo from the set of the new remake was leaked online, revealing actress Zheng Shuang (郑爽) playing as Nie Xiaoqian (Nip Siu-sin). Fans weren’t pleased at all.
The photo is blurry, but it shows Zheng Shuang wearing a white hanfu with pulled-up hair. Fans said Zheng Shuang looked more like a Taoist nun, or even a little boy. Netizens said Zheng Shuang doesn’t have the “ethereal,” “angelic,” and “alluring” look that is required to be Nie Xiaoqian.
Fans were also upset with the character design of Yan Chixia (Yin Chik-ha), played by actor Fingal Fu (付嘉). In the 1987 film, Yan is a Taoist priest who helps Nie Xiaoqian.
Starring alongside Zheng Shuang and Jia Fu is new coming actor Neo Hou (侯明昊), who plays the male lead Ning Caichen (Ning Choi-san).
The story of Nie Xiaoqian and Ning Caichen has been remade numerous times over the years, starting with 1960’s The Enchanting Shadow with Betty Loh (樂蒂) as Nie Xiaoqian, and most recently 2011’s A Chinese Fairy Tale with Crystal Liu (刘亦菲) as the titular character.
