Joe Chen and Chen Xiao’s “Queen Dugu” Finally Gets a Release Date

Queen Dugu <独孤皇后> is finally ready for broadcast, after over a year of sitting in post-production and limbo.

The historical television drama, starring Joe Chen (陳喬恩) and Chen Xiao (陈晓), follows the love story of Dugu Qieluo and Yang Jian, founders of the Sui Dynasty in the year 581. Joe Chen plays Dugu Qieluo, daughter of Western Wei general Dugu Xin, while Chen Xiao plays Yang Jian, later known as Emperor Wen.

Queen Dugu is actually the second adaptation in two years about the historical Dugu sisters that once ruled the Northern and Southern dynasties of ancient China. The last adaptation, The Legend of Dugu <独孤天下> which premiered in February 2018, starred Hu Bingqing (胡冰卿) as Dugu Qieluo, with Ady An (安以軒) starring as the older sister, Dugu Banruo. Li Yixiao (李依曉) starred as the middle sister, Dugu Manguo.

While The Legend of Dugu did focus on Dugu Qieluo’s relationship with Yang Jian, Dugu Banruo’s toxic yet heartbreaking relationship with the villainous Yuwen Hu (portrayed by Jeremy Tsui 徐正溪) outshone the main couple, and many fans who was originally looking forward to Qieluo and Yang Jian’s relationship were left disappointed.

Hopefully fans of Qieluo and Yang Jian will get their fix with Queen Dugu, which will premiere on February 11, 2019 via Chinese streaming sites.
