Joe Ma and Eddie Cheung Leave Shaw Brothers

It seems that not only is TVB struggling to retain talent, its sister company Shaw Brothers is facing the same issue as well. After Selena Lee (李施嬅) quietly decided to not renew her contract, Joe Ma (馬德鐘) and Eddie Cheung (張兆輝) have also left. Veteran artistes including Gigi Wong (黃淑儀), Susanna Kwan (關菊英), Gregory Rivers (河國榮), and Strawberry Yeung (楊玉梅) are also said to be leaving.

After signing with Shaw Brothers, Joe had filmed Flying Tiger 3 <飛虎3壯志英雄>, and some TVB dramas, while occasionally travelling to China for variety shows and live stream selling. It is said that he felt that there was not much difference in his career after signing with Shaw Brothers, which is why he decided to leave.

Responding to press inquiries, Joe admitted that he has already left without any feelings of discontent. With a good relationship with TVB, he is open to working together again in a different form of partnership. He shared that he is open to trying anything including theatrical plays, movies, and radio DJing. He will be travelling between Hong Kong and China often in the future.

Since leaving Shaw Brothers, Eddie revealed that he has not joined another company and will temporarily be managing his own work. He plans to form a production company with a partner to focus on filming variety shows, short videos, advancing the AI market, and supporting new directors.

Strawberry shared that she is still contracted with TVB and will continue to film dramas. Hugo Ng (吳岱融) and his wife Lily Chung’s (鍾淑慧) names were also removed from the list of Shaw Brothers artistes, but they seemed surprised and unaware of the change until contacted by the press.

  1. Not surprised. Shaw Brothers only seem to do cop shows and the market is already oversaturated. TVB has at least started producing a bigger variety of shows, even if they aren’t great. Meanwhile, Shaw Brothers are still stuck in the 2000s.
