Kevin Cheng Takes No Precautions Despite H7N9 Risks

Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) is currently in Hengdian, China filming his latest fantasy drama Hua Xu Yin <华胥引>. The 43-year-old Hong Kong actor gained massive popularity in mainland China after appearing in 2011’s Scarlet Heart <步步惊心>. Since then, Kevin solidified his career in China by accepting roles in major productions such as Ip Man <叶问>, Hero <英雄>, and Red Dust <滚滚红尘>. His salary continues to rise due to market demand. The actor is now rumored to be making nearly $620,000 HKD per episode for his work in mainland.

Since Kevin is scheduled to begin filming for the Ip Man sequel in June, he has been working extra hard to complete his scenes, and even considered working 16-hour days. However, the grueling schedule may have finally taken its toll on his health. Last Thursday, reporters caught Kevin at the film studio sick with a bad cold. Despite the recent H7N9 flu outbreaks, Kevin seemed unconcerned and did not take any precautions when interacting with others.

During a lunch break, Kevin and his assistant were spotted sharing a meal at a restaurant off the studio lot. Kevin immediately asked for water to take his cold medicine. Although in close proximity to his assistant, Kevin did not wear a face mask and proceeded to blow his nose and wipe his watery eyes throughout the meal. Ignoring his illness, Kevin enjoyed a cigarette inside the restaurant before returning to work.

In between scenes, Kevin wandered the studio to visit other production teams. The actor still did not wear a face mask and conversed freely with the crew and his fans in close distances.

Kevin’s costar, fellow Hong Kong actor Benny Chan (陳浩民) was far more cautious. Benny put on his face mask immediately after every take. Even when Kevin stopped by to visit, Benny remained alert and gave little interaction, to avoid contracting any viruses.

  1. He’s definitely overworking himself and looks a little drawn. He should be cautious because if his immunity is a little low he’ll definitely take a longer time to recover from any cough and flu. Even a one-week break before starting IpMan is good.

    1. whats the crazy for Ip Man, is becoming to excessive like Wong Fei-hung, next time is 10 cantong tigers in shanghai tang.

      1. absolutely spot on. Incidentally IP Man has been over-mythologized. He was originally famous for being just the only Wing Chun martial artist this side of the bamboo curtain (There were others who were better but unfortunately inside China in the Cold War days) as well as some airy fairy tale about being Bruce Lee’s instructor. In the overall scheme of master instructors in the Chinese martial world he was actually very ordinary, unlike real legends like Ye Yu Ting (Mizongquan) and Wang Lang (praying mantis).

  2. Kevin, PLEASE DON’T DIE! PROTECT YOURSELF!!

  3. Besides wearing a mask, he needs to wash hands all the time

    1. Fans should organise a gift package with hand soap in it for him.

  4. I’m stil love to watch your dramas Kevin so please take good care of yourself.

  5. He might as well buy a space suit…

    China and bird flu….:(

  6. Miss Kevin ; he is another hard working guy all the best to him..take care…

  7. Some are just too paranoid and it is good to take safely precautions, but you really wonder if all of the little details are necessary??? There are times that you are extra careful but yet you get it while there are others that don’t bother and yet are fine… I guess that is just how Kevin feels so is more laid back.

    1. I hope Kevin will take care of himself (:
But when the H1N1 was here, I didn’t really use any precautions other than a vaccine.

    2. It is fine if Kevin is laid back provided he is not the one who is spreading the virus!

I find it quite insensitive of him. He might be laid back but others might not.
