Louis Cheung Talks About Goals and Career Path

Receiving critical praise for his acting, Louis Cheung (張繼聰) won Most Improved Actor at the 48th TVB Anniversary Awards.  Although he has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade, Louis is the newest rising star at TVB. In a recent interview, he discussed what motivates him, the impact of audience perceptions, and the long journey he has traveled since his days as a newcomer.

Louis Adapts Acting Style to Suit Roles

Over the last 14 years, many marvel at the drastic changes that Louis has undergone. Louis begs to differ, “I’m not the one who has changed; it’s the audience who have changed their perceptions of me.

“They’ve seen my transformation as an actor in very diverse roles – from being goofy and slapstick in Come on, Cousin! <老表,你好hea!> to being a member of royalty in Gilded Chopsticks <食為奴>. As I’m very convincing in different roles, they think that it is a reflection of who I am. They have also seen me sing in addition to act, and they appreciate that I always bring something new. This makes me very happy, as I think actors are sometimes like water. When we are put into different instruments, we take on different shapes and forms. We should never have a fixed persona.”

Louis Cares Less About What Others Think of Him

Louis believes his strengths are not in acting, but rather in being observant and able to stabilize his emotions. He said pensively, “When I was in my twenties, I was eager to prove myself. But I stopped caring as much in my thirties, and this change in attitude altered my destiny. When you’re less hung up about such things and focus more on being a competent and professional actor, the people around you can sense the difference. The things I wanted to achieve seven or eight years ago are now finally completed.

“I’m also glad to say that my emotions have been very stable for the past number of years – no big upheavals. My goal in life now is to be carefree and it no longer matters whether I’m at the top. After all, at the end of the day, work is merely work.”

Louis took the same peaceful attitude with him in his new drama, Against the War of Tangxi <逆戰塘西> in which he plays the lead for the first time in his career. He reflected, “When I first started filming, I was worried that I would not be able to live up to the expectations generated by the hype of Come on, Cousin. But I gradually let go of those thoughts, and stopped caring about what others think, as well as whether I would win any awards. It’s more important that I am constantly challenging and improving myself!”

For the journey ahead, Louis will focus his efforts on maintaining a passion in acting, and preserving the guilelessness and humility that a typical newcomer possesses. “I still see myself as a newcomer today,” Louis said, “And I hope I’ll forever maintain that mindset.”
