Louis Koo initiated efforts to help those hard-hit by the production stalemate.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Hong Kong’s film industries have taken a hit, with film companies suspending production for months and the livelihoods of crew members being affected as a result. As president of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild, Louis Koo (古天樂) has rallied 10 film companies including Emperor Motion Pictures, Media Entertainment Asia, and Shaw Brothers for a film collaboration.

Film to Showcase Resilience Against COVID-19

Each of these companies will invest $3 million Hong Kong dollars, while Louis has also obtained HK$9 million from the Hong Kong Film Development Fund to raise a total of HK$30.9 million on a new film project – a heartwarming, inspiring title about Hong Kongers uniting against the pandemic. The movie is  aimed to raise funds for crew members in the film industry.

Vincent Kok (谷德昭) will serve as chief director while Kwok Chi Kin (郭子健), Chan Hing Ka (陳慶嘉) and others will direct. Actors will be involved on a voluntary basis, with their salaries going towards frontline workers, with the maximum subsidy for those who apply being capped at HK$9,000. Slated to begin production soon, the filming timeline is expected to be shortened.

Everyone to Band Together

Louis Koo explained, “I’m thankful to all the people who have donated to this COVID-19 assistance project. Through this effort, the entire industry can work to support one another, and hopefully the funds will really help needy members of the industry solve their pressing financial difficulties. As production is not expected to resume anytime soon due to the pandemic, hope that everyone can continue to support one another and hang in there to get through this tough period.”

Founder and CEO of Mandarin Motion Pictures, Raymond Wong (黃百鳴) confirmed that 10 companies will be collaborating on the film, and that the financial resources will be handed over to the Guild to distribute to frontline workers of the film industry.

Though Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and Louis Cheung (張繼聰) have already agreed to be part of the film, additional members of the cast lineup is expected to be announced later,
