Moses Chan: “Don’t Watch Wayne Lai’s New Series!”

Last year’s TVB Best Actor, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung’s new series, Rosy Business 2- Righteous Sea of Heroic Love <巾幗梟雄之義海豪情> will be airing in October. Appearing at a skincare event, Moses Chan Ho said he was looking forward to the release of Wayne ’s new series.

Did Moses regard Wayne as a great threat in the competition for the TVB Best Actor Award? Moses said, “The most important thing is that the series is good. Wayne Lai is a good actor and has very few outtakes. You need to have good artists in the same company to increase [friendly competition]. I am very fortunate to have worked with good actors and scripts in the past.”

Reporters pointed out that Wayne Lai said that among his series to-date, he was most satisfied with Rosy Business 2. Moses commented, “I am sure the public response will be outstanding once the series is aired. I am still awaiting my ‘representative series.’ I acted in many good scripts, but due to the roles, I do not have a representative series yet.

Moses joked that if everyone wanted to help him [in the race for TVB Best Actor], then they should not watch Wayne Lai’s new series,Rosy Business 2, on the television set.

Jayne: I found Moses Chan’s joke about not watching Wayne Lai’s Rosy Business 2 to be in poor taste. If the press did not misquote Moses, it is very inappropriate to even encourage fans to not watch other artists’ series.

This year’s TVB series did not receive much critical acclaim. Still not sure who TVB will decide to “reward” this year. It could be Wayne Lai again, who knows?

Raymond Wong’s When Lanes Merge had good critical reception. Given his frequent interviews in recent magazines, he will surely winBest Supporting Actor or the Most Improved Actor Award.

  1. Actually I know he was just joking. The words might sound harsh but I understand his meaning. I always like Moses offscreen. He seems like a rather soft spoken gentle sort of gentleman and I am happy he recognises the fact that he still has not reached his potential so there’s humility. Maybe he should do a series with Wayne to increase his acting prowess. If Wayne says his best acting is in the soon to be released series, well I am looking forward to it though the title sounds rather epic.

Amongst the older TVB actors I would hope for Liu Kai Chi to come back. He and Wayne can star in a series together and I would bet it would be quality performance. Throw in Roger Kwok, Deric Wan and did I see Alex Man coming back as well? Felix and all, I tell you that should be the grand production of the year. Leave out the sore points like Joe Ma and the likes but then how will they learn if they do not act opposite the great ones?

  2. his comment on not having a representative role a little off as well …

he was somewhat dissing his previous roles.

  3. Actually, I think Moses has had the most opportunity to play a lot of good roles, and that’s why he has improved so fast and got promoted through the years. I think he was able to show versatility in his acting because of the good roles he got. My favorite one is still Duk Duk Dei in HOG. I have to say it was a very memorable and likeable role, and he did deserve to win that year. I thought he was very funny and cute in there, but I really don’t like his performance this year in CBML. I hope Moses does not get it for this series as I have seen better performances from him. If Wayne says that Rosy 2 is his representative piece, I have high expectations of it and wouldn’t be surprised if he gets it Best Actor again, Hey, Gallen Lo did, right?

  4. He was obviously joking in a good-natured way. I don’t see how it was poor taste.

  5. Funn, Liu Kai Chi is now teaching acting classes. I forgot where, but at a well known acting institution in HK. I think TVB should send some artists to these classes.

I don’t think Deric Wan will ever come back again. He did so in the early 2000’s and TVB did not exactly treat him properly, they cast him in a lot of low budget and poorly scripted series. The problem with artists who leave TVB and come back is that the politics and dynamic elements are constantly evolving. During the time these artists were gone, many things would have changed already.

Highly adaptive personalitites such as Michael Miu have no problem leaving for over a decade and coming back to TVB; he’ll just make new allies. But personalities such as Deric Wan are more highly principled and if he left for a good reason, there is a low chance he will come back.

I like Alex Man’s explosive style of acting. I wish more actors nowadays had the acting distinction the older ones had. But the new generation of ators all seem to act “safely” or rather be “commercial” actors; money is seen as the ultimate goal rather true passion in acting. Even the promising ones are too busy venturing into singing, filming ads, and making more cash on the side.

Back in the 80’s, singers were singers. TV actors only appeared on TV; movie actors only in films etc. There were very few crossovers, which were better for audiences and artists, who could focus on improving their craft.

  6. Funn, I think TVB still runs some “improvement” acting classes, but not full-fledged ones like in the 80’s, where the actors went to classes for many months. If they have any acting classes now, they seem much shorter is length and not as prominent as the old days.

Maybe someone else can answer Funn’s question with more knowledge?

  7. TVB’s acting class now last for 6 months. 3 months study 3 months practical. It’s has been like this for a long time already.

  8. The title should be:

Wayne Lai: “Don’t Watch Moses Chan’s 2010 Series!”

  9. From my little knowledge TVB still offer acting courses of about 3-6 months to MHK, MCI, Mr. HK winners before they debut onscreen.

  10. I submitted too fast, darn :P.

Quoting Jayne: I like Alex Man’s explosive style of acting. I wish more actors nowadays had the acting distinction the older ones had. We must be having different cups of tea. LOL. I dislike Alex Man’s explosive style of acting. It’s too explosive and overdone for me. I prefer Bowie Lam’s calmer style of acting, although some may call him wooden or underacting.

  11. He’s joking, just one of those “I’m not serious but plz, I don’t mind if you do it” statement. I really hope his fan base is big enough and his popularity is greater than Wayne 😀

  12. Masaharu, each actor has their brand of acting. In general, I don’t like OTT acting, but Alex Man has an energy, enthusiasm, and raw emotions that are hard to beat. His style is a notch livelier than Tsang Kong, a veteran I love very much as well.

Bowie Lam is very much in his element an perhaps his calmer way of acting has influenced many others. However, many who copy this style can under-deliver and come across as bland.

  13. “He’s joking, just one of those “I’m not serious but plz, I don’t mind if you do it” statement. I really hope his fan base is big enough and his popularity is greater than Wayne ”

Moses might have bigger fanbase and popularity but Wayne is one with pure talent and acting skills and ability to carry a series weight on his back

  14. Moses’ fanbase & popularity might be greater (not rly sure about that) but ppl actually listen to him, I doubt his level of influence. But hey, it got us talking and lead to 15 comments lol

  15. Moses joked is very poor taste. He should choose his words more careful. Afterall, he’s a public figure and his words don’t fall on deaf ears.
