Music competitions will precedence in 2019, with return of shows such as Idol Producer, Produce 101, and The Rap of China. Dating shows will also be re-introduced into the variety scene, such as Meeting Mr. Right and Love is… Check out the list below:

Idol Producer Season 2 <青春有你>

The first season of Idol Producer founded the best-selling boy band Nine Percent, which will be officially disbanding in October 2019. Season 2, renamed to Youth with You, will follow a similar format, in which viewers get to select their favorite trainees to debut in a boy band. Judges include MC Jin, Seventeen’s The8, Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), and Li Ronghao (李榮浩), with Lay Zhang (张艺兴) returning to produce.

All for One <以团之名>

Coming this month, All for One is also a boy band competition, featuring 100 trainees selected from around the world. One of the 100 is Ashley Zhang (张浩锋), son of Catherine Hung (洪欣).

Produce 101 <创造101>

Last year’s Produce 101, a spin-off of the Korean variety show of the same name, founded the girl group Rocket Girls 101 (火箭少女101). Season 2 will focus on finding the next big boy group.

The Coming One Season 3 <明日之子>

2019 will air the third season of The Coming One, which focuses on finding a band that has both visuals in talent. While the show focused on producing boy groups in previous seasons, season 3 will instead focus on producing a new girl group.

Viva La Romance Season 2 <妻子的浪漫旅行>

Viva La Romance, a show that explores marriages, was a big hit for Mango TV when it premiered last year. The show takes a unique format, in which the wives would take a vacation together away from their husbands, while their husbands observe their lifestyles from afar. Last season featured stars such as Cherrie Ying (應采兒) and Jordan Chan (陳小春). Season 2, which will begin filming this year, will reportedly star Deng Chao (邓超), Sun Li (孙俪), Guo Jingjing (郭晶晶) and her husband, Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明), and Angelababy.

My Little One Season 2 <我家那小子>

The first season explores the lives of single male artists through a documentary-style format, bringing entertainment and joy in viewers. The second season (我家那閨女) will reportedly follow female artists, and actresses who are rumored to appear include Yuan Shanshan (袁姍姍), Yang Zi (楊紫), and Shen Yue (沈月).

Dunk of China Season 2 <这!就是灌篮>

Basketball has always been one of the more popular and widely sports in the nation. Dunk of China, starring singer Jay Chou (周杰倫) with basketball player Jeremy Lin (林書豪), drew in 51 million viewers in a span of a few days when it premiered last year, becoming a huge commercial and cultural success.

Meeting Mr. Right <女儿们的恋爱>

Meeting Mr. Right will be a new dating show that focuses on fathers observing their daughter’s dating lifestyle through documentaries and videos. Celebrity fathers like Paul Chun (秦沛) and Felix Wong (黃日華) will reportedly star.

The Rap of China Season 2 <中国新说唱>

The Rap of China featuring Kris Wu (吴亦凡) became a cultural phenomenon when it first dropped, and the show is credited for spreading rap in China. The second season will see the return of familiar stars, including new editions such as G.E.M. (鄧紫棋).

Love is… <想谈个和偶像剧一样的恋爱>

Similar to Viva La Romance and Meeting Mr. Right, observation documentaries are the new trend for 2019. Love is… will follow a similar format, in which four young pairs will come together and try out a dating life similar to that of characters in idol dramas.
