Raymond Lam Shows Rugged Side in Action Movie, “Kowloon Walled City”

Since signing with Louis Koo‘s (古天樂) company in 2019, Raymond Lam (林峯) has been able to diversify his film roles. After P Storm <P風暴> as a psychopath, Raymond shows his rugged masculinity in upcoming action movie Kowloon Walled City <九龍城寨,圍城>.

The movie’s star-studded cast attended the booting ceremony recently, including Raymond, Louis, Sammo Hung (洪金寶), Richie Ren (任賢齊), Philip Ng (伍允龍), and Terence Lau (劉俊謙).

Set in the 1980s in Kowloon Walled City which was rife with triads, Louis comments on the movie took one year to prepare due to the rigorous fight scenes. “The [main] cast trained for one year before filming, so it’s very tough. Unless they are very difficult or dangerous scenes requiring body doubles, the action scenes will be completed by the actors themselves.”

With the most scenes opposite Raymond, Richie complemented his co-star for putting up with the biggest “sacrifices” and added, “Raymond is usually a sophisticated and gentle looking man. For this film, I saw that he has become more tanned and manly. In the training, it is as if I am working with a martial arts star! We are all portraying his seniors in the movie though, so we will have a chance to beat him up. I look forward to it!”

To this, Raymond laughed, “From the movie’s start to end, I get beaten up! I have a lot of action scenes, so I need more time to train. I prepped for more than a month. Hopefully, the results will turn out well.” Excited about his action role, Raymond added, “I really need to thank Louis. He gave me this opportunity to challenge myself…. After filming this movie, I believe we all can be considered partial martial artists!”

Soon to turn 42 years old, Raymond will be too busy filming in Hong Kong through the holidays to spend his birthday with family. “[Missing time with family] is definitely an artiste’s suffering. My wife and daughter are in China right now. My biggest motivation is to chat on the phone with my family at the end of each day.”
