Rising to the Challenge: Ali Lee Focuses on Micro Expressions in “AI Rhapsody”

Taking on the role of an artificial intelligence robot in AI Rhapsody <智能愛(AI)人>, Ali Lee (李佳芯) is challenged to nail her character’s micro expressions. Given that AI Rhapsody is a 30-episode drama, there is a lot of thought Ali has to put into her performance to give a believable delivery. She wants to enliven her robot character without going overboard and appearing too human-like.

A simple scene such as a mahjong game requires Ali to figure out the right balance in expressions to apply.  “Sometimes the expressions I make end up being really different from what I imagine–I have to get used to myself first before finding my micro expressions. In the first five episodes, I could not have too many expressions or movements but at the same time I can not be too deadpan, so I had to find ways to make myself more lively. I’m just taking a step at a time now and doing my best.”

Stills from the set reveal Ali flashing her robot-like smile while wearing a blue-streaked bob wig and colored contact lenses to give her character a fresh look. Looking slim in athletic gear for the day’s scenes, Ali said she did not intentionally lose weight for her role. Initially afraid that her wig would make her head look disproportionately big compared to the rest of her body, she threw away all worries once arriving on set.  “I seldom wear a wig during filming–it’s tougher in the summer,” Ali admitted.

Wants to Own Her Own Home

That day, filming took place first in Yuen Long followed by Eden Villa property, which impressed Ali with its beautiful exteriors and reignited her dreams of buying her own home. Working hard towards this goal, the 37-year-old actress has yet to set a target for when this would happen but she hopes to be able to make her purchase in the next one to two years.

Saving up for years, Ali did “not want to stress or burden herself” so prices and chance would determine when she becomes a homeowner. “If I find a suitable place which I can afford, I’ll buy it. I have not set a budget regarding how much I would spend. It really depends on the right timing and how much savings I have accumulated by then.”

  1. I feel like this role would be the hardest yet. To look like a robot but still slightly human like. But I feel like Ali can pull it off. The producer did a good job in selecting her. Not liking the hair that much. I miss her “exploded” hair as she says in DBZ haha.
