Sammi Cheng Visits Yunnan to Raise Awareness of Hunger and Poverty

Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) recently traveled to Yunnan’s mountainous regions to film a television special for nowTV, hoping to raise awareness of the area’s impoverished conditions. The program also showcases the charity efforts of non-profit Heifer International, a global organization that aims to end hunger and poverty by providing livestock, edible plants, and agricultural training to needy families. The show, Follow Mi Sammi Cheng and Heifer’s Journey to Yunnan Mountainous Regions <Follow Mi鄭秀文小母牛雲南山區之旅>, documents Sammi’s experiences while living with three local families. Sammi cheerfully accepted the mission and walked away with a new appreciation for the strength and perseverance of the struggling people.

Ever the humanitarian, Sammi has donated much of her time and resources to charities in the past. She vowed to give back to the community every year, and has thus far donated over a seven-digit sum to various organizations. She also personally volunteers her time at hospitals, and has traveled to Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, and Ethiopia to visit their hungry children. Sammi has also sponsored over 22 children all over the world, spreading her love to those who need it the most.

During the Yunnan trip, Sammi visited a family that was able to turn their lives around due to assistance from Heifer International. The Cao family was broken up because Mr. and Mrs. Cao were away most of the year doing odd jobs to put bread on the table. With Heifer’s help, the Caos are able to reunite and raise livestock in their own home. Sammi was able to see the family’s success first-hand. “The Caos now have cement floors in their house, a big improvement from their previous dirt floors. After receiving assistance from Heifer International, they now own 30 pigs and can fully sustain themselves with their livestock and harvests.”

Sammi also took the opportunity to praise Heifer International, applauding their spirit of giving. “I really like Heifer’s concept of ‘pass it forward’. Families that benefited from the program often promise to extend their help to other families in need.”

  1. to hongkong people.. please show more support for edward showden

  2. She’s awesome. Such a beautiful soul. I’m so glad I bought her music. Money well spent.

  3. I think this news is interesting whereas Angelina Jolie in Syria is not _ I don’t think the latter is effective as a celebrity ambassador. We may better remember Princess Diana for landmines and Audrey Hepburn for children’s welfare not because they were such saints for caring but because their celebrity was strongly identified to a cause but Angelina Jolie feels all over the place – she’s always somewhere with a scarf over her head.

  4. It is great when celebs think about others less fortunate and use their celebrity status to help them out. Kudos to Sammi for doing so and hope that she can encourage others(whether celeb or not) to do the same.

    1. Agree with you, it’s nice for celebrities to think of the less fortunate & return to the societies. I hope there’ll be more people to follow suit.

  5. I don’t see what good this sort of thing does – isn’t it really a matter of governments deciding whether to help these people? It makes ordinary people feel helpless and guilty – are we supposed to sell our homes and help someone suffering so much to become more comfortable by reducing our personal comfort to the most basic level. I never really know if it is a good thing when celebs do this – do they feel compelled then to halve their fortunes to personally assist?

I think the worse celeb story is that Alek Wek lost her father to the civil war and is now a UN representative – that’s awful. I don’t understand why we are told terrible things are happening and not enough is being done about it instead of those advisements being forced upon governments – as ordinary people, what good does it do us to know of this?

    1. you don’t have to sell your home to help people. you can also help your local community (as volunteer at the soup kitchen, donate some clothes that you don’t need to the Salvation Army etc). if none of these stories are told, then no one knows about them and we as a people becomes ignorant of other people’s suffering. celebs are people too, they just have more money to help others that is all.

    2. If we have the means to help, we should do so. It doesn’t mean that we have to give up all of our possessions unless, like some, you feel that is your calling in life. But at the very least, we should have compassion for people’s suffering. How can a person be human without compassion?

Ideally, a government should represent the peoples’ best interests and be able to implement plans to improve their lives. But take a look at the news. Life obviously doesn’t work that way. Sure, an ordinary person might not be able to do much and realistically, we won’t be able to help everybody. But who says misery should win without a fight?

Have you ever heard of these words from the Talmud?

“For this reason man was created alone, to teach you that whoever destroys a single soul, he is guilty as though he had destroyed a complete world; and whoever preserves a single soul, it is as though he had preserved a whole world.”

      1. Very well said Jack and I really agree with you. I don’t really understand what Cleo is saying, but she sort of reminds me of one of my former friends. Of course we will not be able to help everybody, but if you can help in any way possible even if it is in the smallest way, why not?? If we were all just selfish people who lived in our own little world and are ignorant of others’ suffering, then what is the point of living well??? One of my teachers taught me that we live in what the homeless and less fortunate call “paradise”( since we were singing the song “Paradise”). We may take having a roof over our heads, food on the table, decent clothing to wear, and other pleasures for granted. But yet there are others out there that don’t even have the basic necessities to live.

My mom who is overly religious taught my siblings and I to always care about the less fortunate. She thinks that we are lucky in this life to have what we have. Regardless of how our life seems, there are others that are suffering even more. If we turn our blind eye to all that, one day when we are in trouble, wouldn’t we want someone to help us too??? You can be rich and famous one moment but poor and unknown the next because life is unpredictable.

Who said that we had to sell our house or reduce the basic needs of our life to help??? Even donating a few dollars to charity or something small like that is something. As the saying goes, it is the thought that counts. But if you were some rich person who donated a lot of money but complain and bring attention to it, then what is the point of that?? It is not the amount of money or whatever, but it is the kindness and compassion that comes from the heart that is the most important.

    3. Sorry Cleo, but I don’t agree with what you are saying. Who said that you had to sell your house or whatever to help others? If you do not want to, then no one is forcing you. But I do hope that you as you grow older, you will learn more about human compassion and thinking of others less fortunate than you are. I guess many people don’t realize how important it is to help others until they suffer the same fate.

    4. To Cleo,

I dont understand what you were trying to write. I assumed you were puzzled why people helped.

A lot of people misunderstood the word “charities” it doesn’t necessarily means give out money to the less fortunate. If you dont have money but you have time, you can give out some of your time to help out. In a way all of us could give out, that depends on you yourself. If you think you would like to donate money, go ahead & do that. If you think you want to buy them food or other necessities, yes, go ahead, but some of us only can give our time & that’s also giving out to the less fortunate. Just imagine each & everyone of us are giving a bit & this world will become a better place to live!

      1. Well said Bloom and I totally agree with you. It is not just about money, but other things too.

  6. wonder where all the govt funds go? shouldn’t priority be given those in hunger and homeless? haven’t we no say to the tax monies? tax monies don’t come from the presidents, prime ministers or royalties, they come from the people and should be given back to the people who are in need.

  7. my oh my, she really is a ‘fei gei cheong’ aeroplane, flat chest. This nickname very suits her.

But hey, I like them small, hehehe.

    1. >But hey, I like them small, hehehe.

Uhhh…”something a child predator would say” for 300, Alex.

      1. You are one confused idiot. Your english don’t pass the test of a grade 5 child.

Child predators like them young, not small.

Is yours extra big? Hahaha, it seems so, since it is cup size D, and you add in another d, wow, double D, that’s really BIGGGG, so you fantasize about people liking them BIG, and feel offended when i said i like them small, eh?

        Gotcha, i psycho-analysed your comment deep deep…

      2. You’re just digging your own grave by trying to defend your fetishes.

      3. When girls grow them out as a child, they start small and stay small for some time. For some, it may be a longer time. They don’t wake up and the next day it’s WHAM! Torpedoes on my chest. Nuh-uh.

        Just saying.

      4. You are already dead and buried since you go fantasizing people loving your DD size cups,

My fantasy? show yours to me and I will still ‘go for it’, no problem fulfilling your ‘exposing’ fetish as you like to announce to the world you got DD size.

Come show me! It’s nice to do some charity work to soothe some hurt and inferiority feelings for you once a while. Hehehe,

      5. ^ One of the funniest arguments in the history of JS

    2. Instead of being touched by compassion and charitable works, small-minded people are only riveted by physical proportions.

    3. To Small is beautiful, Sammi Cheng may be flat chested but so what? Not all of us were born with big breast. And some girls will go for plastic surgery. I’m also a flat chested lady & I’m practically all right with my size & I’m comfortable with that.

      1. I don’t get what is up with the breast sizes?? At least Sammi and does not feel the need to go for PS just to get fake ones. It is the inside that counts, not the outside. I have cousins that have gone for it and we all know it is fake even though they are bigger but so what? They are still the same people that they were before that.

      2. I wouldnt want my girlfriend or wife to get breast implants because of the side effects if they rupture and may cause cancer.

      3. That is why i said i like them small, get it?

After so many posts and you still not know? Gimme a break.
