Success of “Crazy Rich Asians” Leads to Job Opportunities for Cast

Often Asian actors have been typecast or placed in minor supporting roles in Hollywood films. With the success of Crazy Rich Asians, it has dispelled the idea that there is no market for Asian actors and has opened the doors to many opportunities for the cast.

Since Crazy Rich Asians, lead actor Henry Golding has acted as the male lead in A Simple Favor opposite Blake Lively as her husband. He also took part in Last Christmas co-starring Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson. He is also slated to star in The Gentleman, an upcoming film starring Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant about a British drug lord that tries to sell his marijuana empire to billionaires.

Female lead, Constance Wu (吳恬敏), continues to lead in the hit comedy Fresh Off the Boat and will star in Hustlers, an upcoming film about strip club employees who join forces to turn against their Wall Street clients co- starring Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B.

Gemma Chan (陳靜) who played Henry Golding’s cousin Astrid has become the new muse of the fashion world, making regular appearances on magazines and has designers fighting to dress her for the red carpet. She has also appeared in Captain Marvel as Minn-Erva.

Lastly, Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) who played Henry Golding’s controlling mother has always been well known in Asia as a big action star. In 1997, she made her Hollywood debut as a Bond girl. In 2000, she took part in Ang Li‘s (李安) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It was a big hit and won four Oscars. As well, she also acted in Memoirs of a Geisha opposite Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) and Gong Li (鞏俐) further cementing her status in Hollywood.

Recently she has been starring in TV show Star Trek Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. It is rumored that due to its success, CBS plans on creating a spin-off series for her character. As well, James Cameron has announced that he will be creating the sequel to Avatar and he looks forward to working with Michelle who will be playing a scientist, Dr. Karina Mogue

  1. As expected the more Caucasian looking cast aka Henry gets the most offers . Although i liked his performance in CRA, i still dont know why they they casted a non chinese looking guy to play a chinese guy

      1. @nigel i know but he does not look an ounce Chinese like what Nic was supposed to be . If the role he was playing is Eurasian like him , it would make sense . Just like how Eurasian Thai stars in Thai dramas lol

i didn’t even know he was half white until i read about him on wiki. i thought he was full blood asian. didn’t read the books but he looks philiphino to me given his dark skin.

      1. @m0m0 knew he is half white because I live in Msia but I do agreed that he doesn’t look white at all unlike Dennis Oh or the likes. But he looks good in the movie though.
