Top Mainland Chinese Dramas in 2018

As viewers are gearing up for another new year of exciting dramas, the broadcast numbers for the top 20 Mainland Chinese dramas from 2018 were released by Shanghai-based marketing consulting company, VLinkage.

In 2018, Mr. Right <恋爱先生> took home the top spot on the list of Top 20 Dramas with Highest Viewership (Broadcast) with 1.56% in ratings. Coming in second and third were Mother’s Life <娘道> with 1.54%, and The Story of Zheng Yang Gate <正阳门下小女人> at 1.41%.

With four from the top five dramas airing on Jiangsu Television, the station emerged as the biggest winner. On the flip side, Hunan Television failed to produce a drama within the top five slots, and their highest performing drama was Negotiator <談判官> coming in the eighth spot.

On the list of Top 20 Dramas with Highest Viewership (Weekly Broadcast), the clear winner was 2018’s favorite Legend of Fuyao <扶搖> at .84%. Idol drama Meteor Garden <流星花園> came in at second with .83%, while Guan Xiaotong’s Untouchable Lovers <鳳囚凰> took home third place with .72%.

In the Top 20 Dramas with Highest Viewership (Web Broadcast) category, breakout drama Story of Yanxi Palace <延禧攻略> was the clear champion with 18.2 billion views. Second place went to Mr. Right again at 16.35 billion views, while Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Place <如懿傳> came in third with 16.1 billion views. It’s also worth mentioning that Ashes of Love and Legend of Fuyao came in fourth and fifth respectively – indicating that these dramas were also very popular among online viewers.

Although Hunan Television was unsuccessful in airing a chart-topping drama, their first drama of 2019 is seemingly doing fairly well. Counting on the The Story of Minglan <知否知否应是绿肥红瘦>, starring newly-weds Zanilia Zhao (趙麗穎) and Feng Shaofeng (馮紹峰), Hunan Television is hoping to make a major comeback this year.
