Vic Chou is Grateful Towards Barbie Hsu

The World Between Us: After the Flames <我們與惡的距離 2> held a media screening on May 7. The drama opened with the message, “No man is an island” to express the core mission of embracing individuals from all walks of life. In the series, Vic Chou’s (周渝民) character grieves the loss of a loved one and remains in sorrow for an extended period. He is constantly supported by close friends, played by Hsueh Shih Ling (薛仕凌) and Derek Chang (薛仕凌).
Vic Chou shared that many people have supported him during hard times, including his late ex-girlfriend Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛). His sudden mention of the late actress during the interview surprised everyone present. Vic elaborated that his most unforgettable experience was filming Meteor Garden <流星花園>. “When my acting wasn’t good, Director Tsai Yueh Hsun (蔡岳勳) supported me. When I wasn’t in a good mental state, Barbie supported me. Throughout my life, I’ve always had many supporters by my side. Maybe it’s because I’ve treated people well, so many were willing to support me. I feel very lucky.”
Vic played a heavy role in The World Between Us: After the Flames. In the first episode, he was seen constantly with tear-streaked cheeks, displaying extreme emotional instability. He admitted that transitioning in and out of character wasn’t easy, “I really need personal space, even if it’s just sitting alone in the bathroom. I need to constantly talk to myself internally.” During behind-the-scenes, Vic often did not want to talk, confessing that he has not found the best way to leave a character behind. After a year of emotional processing, he could finally speak about filming from his own perspective with a bit of humor.
Vic shared many scenes with child actor Bai Run Yin (白潤音). While Vic worked with talented young actors before, this was his first time dealing with a child actor handling such intense emotions. “On set, I tried to stay on the same wavelength as the children. I brought chocolate to help them release positive hormones, because I didn’t know the best way to help them process emotions. Bai Run Yin was very professional and could clearly separate himself from the character. He was better than me in that regard–he vented his emotions and moved on.”
Bai Run Yin shared the filming process was enjoyable and during downtime he would play around and chat about random things. “That may have been my way of emotional processing, helping me to relax again after the scene was done.”
