“Wolf Warrior” Star Wu Jing Investigated by Tax Authorities

Netizens and fans alike were disappointed to find out the nation’s hero, Wolf Warrior <战狼> star Wu Jing (吴京), was one of the 17 celebrities who are being investigated by tax authorities.

Last week, a document that originated from Huangdian World Studios offices stated that the State Administration of Taxation had been in contact with 17 Chinese celebrities in regard to their tax filings over the past year. Rumors say the 17 celebrities include Yang Mi (杨幂), Zanilia Zhao (赵丽颖), Hu Yitian (胡一天), Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明), Angelababy (杨颖), Vicki Zhao (赵薇), Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), Lu Han (鹿唅), and Wu Jing. Among the 17 celebrities, 6 of them have to pay back over 100 million yuan in taxes, and according to rumors, Wu Jing has to pay back 200 million yuan—the highest number on the list.

It was a disappointing discovery for netizens who were fans of Wu Jing and his heroic Wolf Warrior films, in which the 2017 sequel became the highest-grossing film in China, grossing 5.68 billion yuan. Wu produced, directed, and starred in the film. 14 companies invested in the movie, and two of them belonged to Wu Jing.

According to the Wolf Warrior contracts written up by Wu Jing’s distribution companies, the distributors will get 12 percent of the revenue—and Wu Jing 88 percent—if the film earns less than 800 million yuan. If the film grosses between 800 million yuan and 1.5 billion yuan, the distributors get 25 percent and Wu Jing 75 percent. If the film grosses over 1.5 billion yuan, the distributions get 15 percent.

Due to Wu Jing’s earnings from the film, he was due to pay over 200 million yuan in taxes, however, it was rumored that Wu Jing only payed 500,000 yuan. With speculations of his tax evasion going public, Wu Jing’s bank accounts have reportedly been frozen. Wu Jing’s image is also suffering a huge blow, as he was once regarded as the nation’s hero.

“So this is how you love a nation,” wrote one netizen. Another said, “He isn’t a nation lover, but a nation betrayer.”

  1. Not the least bit surprised about the tax-cheating celebrities in China, but really surprised that the tax authorities are going all out to nail them, and all big names too…………Time to wipe that smirky grin of Angela Baby’s face from all those tax cheating.

  2. so much for ultra patriot wu jing

the tax man probably got a big break on some leads which led to exposing many celebs

    1. @mangotango You love your country, you pay your taxes.

Kinda idealistic because everyone evades tax, except Fan Bing Bing who seriously cheated the tax stuff. Thanks to her everyone got investigated. I suppose fans of actors not in the list must rejoice that their idols are honest or perhaps have better accountants?

  3. Not that surprising since they’re so sketchy except for Vicki and zhang zhiyi. The rest actings are always a hit or miss, mostly misses but they’re always the lead. It’s funny cause now they’re all going to blame their accountants for the money that’s in their pocket, probably say some like “we did not know anything about our contracts or money at All, we can not believe these atrocities are happening,”

Exactly and I remember when Korean actress Song Hye Ko was caught for evading tax, she blamed it all on her accountant. Then she paid the big amount she owed with all the fees. She was lucky to not get convicted.
