ATV Cuts Back on Food and Water for Staff

Struggling financially for years, ATV may be on the brink of collapse if it does not receive an injection of new revenue. The station has been unable to pay many of its staff members in the last two months. Although ATV proposed cutting costs and selling low-cost advertisements, it struggled to even provide the basic benefits for their artistes at the station.

Among ATV’s cost-cutting measures include reduced cafeteria hours. With new cafeteria hours of operations running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, many of ATV’s staff and artistes became highly displeased as many of them work fairly late into the evening. ATV’s cafeteria menu also underwent several changes and has discontinued combo meal plans and the serving of noodles.

Perhaps due to staff outcry, ATV announced that they would resume normal cafeteria hours on January 12. Admitting to having problems with paying employee salaries earlier, ATV’s spokesperson, Wong Sau Tung (黃守東) came forth about the recent changes being made at the studio. “There are a lot of colleagues that are on vacation in January and adjustments had to be made to the janitorial staffing. But we will ensure a sufficient number of employees.”

As to why some of the water dispenser machines mysteriously disappeared at the ATV studio as well as lack of refills, Wong Sau Tung said he was unsure as he was on vacation himself.

    1. Most of the people are not leaving even if they still have to get their wages of last months. The reason is because it is very hard to find a suitable job.

Other TV stations (TVB, Now TV, etc) are not desperately looking for new employees, so they all become jobless for quite a long time.

ATV is losing money for years now. Besides the employees wages, ATV still have to pay other costs (such as the license fee). If they only get enough money to pay for the employees, some other costs cannot be paid. All the creditors could ask for bankruptcy at some time.

    1. I bet even the cafeteria employees are hesitant to work there, because of the wage issues. I think many people want a stable job, so pay per day is not really an optioon for most employees

  1. wow ATV is at it lowest point … but then they still lie to the public about their financial status as if their fine. Just tell the truth your in big crisis and perhaps a new buyer will pop and buy ATV once more and reorganize it.

Future ain’t bright, the end is just around the corner.

    1. It may not be wise to publicize their real financial situation. It is better to send out the message that they are fine. No investors want to invest in a tv station that is struggling. Investors want to gain profit, not lose. Also, if they plan to sell their station, it is better to keep their financial problem a secret in order to sell the station at a higher price.

    2. You’re funny. In the entertainment business, it’s deny everything and admit nothing.

No I’m not pregnant, it’s gas or i gained a bit of weight. Finally coming clean when it’s obvious they can’t hide it anymore

No no no … we are not dating, we are just friends. Until they caught making out, they still deny

Our divorce is amicable, there are no third party … until the 3rd party came out.

Just a few examples, you see where i am getting at.

      1. Good points Winnie! We all know how this business is. Deny as much as you can until you are caught red handed.

  2. Why don’t Ricky Wong buy ATV and broadcast HKTV drama that they filmed already. Since they Drama on stand by and ATV has a license? I know Ricky had a falling out at ATV years ago but still?

    1. If he buys ATV, he will have to pay all its debts. Plus, Ricky Wong stated before that he’s anti-government. Even if he does buy ATV, it doesn’t guarantee that China will approve his free broadcasting license.

  3. Should do it like the GM in the US. Cry to the government until they get a bailout. Lol. This is sarcasm so no need for reply about different govt, bad idea on bailout, so forth. Laugh and move on folks 😀

  4. some part of me is gleefully watching this unravel. i just want some popcorn while questioning how this whole ordeal will unfold.

i bet hk govt is kicking itself in the @$$ for not taking hktv’s earlier offer into the market. yeah renewing license for atv is suuuuch a brilliant idea. welp, now it’s their headache and no suitable tv stations are offering a solution. womp womp.

  5. The decision to cut food and water is exactly why they’re failing. Management has no clue how to retain employees. No sacrifices on mgmt’s end. Mind as well cut the toilet paper while you’re at it. That’ll make even more sense…. smh

    1. Oh gosh,it would be sad to cut back on the use of toilet paper. They will truly protest! This is just so sad! I wonder if there is any hope left for ATV? I will be really sad if they truly do close down.

  6. this sucks really bad and it is reaching to the end

  7. Wong Sau Tung on vacation? Is he having a laugh … all these workers not being paid fully and on time! The only way they can sort this out is that the Government step in and bail them out. Feel sorry for the normal workers that make the studio run and have continued to do so!
