Dayo Wong’s New Standup Comedy Gets 90 Points

The king of Hong Kong stand-up comedy, Dayo Wong (黃子華), held the first showing of his 2012 stand-up comedy concert, Shower <洗燥>, on October 4 in the Hong Kong Coliseum. The tickets for his 10-day show were sold out in a matter of seconds, causing an immediate inflation in ticket prices!

Many of Dayo’s colleagues and friends attended the first showing, including Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智) and his wife, Grasshopper member Calvin Choy (蔡一智) and his wife, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and his wife JuliaAmy Kwok (郭藹明), and hip hop group, FAMA (農夫).

Dayo opened the show with a mini-movie that starred HKFA Best Actor, Sean Lau (劉青雲) and TV King Wayne Lai, titled Whirlwind Kick <旋風腿>. In the movie, Sean portrays a high-ranking public relations executive, while Wayne Lai portrays the Commissioner of Police. After the movie was over, Dayo Wong joked that he churned out over $20 million to hire the two Best Actor winners, but it was all worth it for the audience.

The response for Shower was extremely mixed. Many fans were disappointed with Dayo’s performance this year, arguing that the quality of his jokes had dropped significantly. However, a majority of the fans did enjoy his show immensely, and most of them rated his show with a 90 percent approval rating.

Nonetheless, there were a few loyal fans who had highly positive reviews of the show. Some even said that the show was comparable to Dayo’s 1997 show, Settling It Before Autumn <秋前算帳> and 1999’s Tenth Anniversary <拾下拾下拾年棟篤笑>, two of Dayo’s most critically successful comedy shows.

Dayo’s Hong Kong tour of Shower will end on October 13. Afterwards, he will bring his tour to Canada on January 26, 2013 at the Sony Centre.
