Hu Ge Feels Remorse About 2006 Car Accident: “I Was Meant to Do Something”

Hu Ge (胡歌) took an unpleasant trip down memory lane when he recalled the near-fatal car accident he had experienced back in 2006. During the talk show Readers <朗读者>, the Chinese superstar brought up the miraculous yet horrendous accident, confessing to viewers that he feels remorse for having survived.

In 2006, while Hu Ge was filming Tangren Media’s The Legend of the Condor Heroes <射鵰英雄传>, the actor got involved in a severe car accident on the highway. He sustained multiple injuries on his body and face, including his right eye and right cheeks. Scraps of broken glass were cut into his neck. Hu Ge received over 100 stitches from his injuries and underwent skin grafting surgery in Hong Kong and South Korea.

It has now been 12 years since the accident, and Hu Ge finds himself going back to that day, his mind wandering back to the past. “I carried rings of light after that accident. Everyone kept saying how brave it was of me to have gotten myself out of that accident. I got many undeserved compliments… I didn’t need to have held onto those labels. I don’t know why, but 2006 was the year of my zodiac. I was born in the year of the dog. Now it’s 2018, exactly 12 years later. It’s come full circle, and because of that, I’m starting to think about these things more.”

In 2015, Hu Ge’s career was taken to an all-new high following his starring appearance in the cultural hit Nirvana in Fire <琅琊榜>, winning multiple awards. Nirvana in Fire centers on Hu Ge’s character Mei Changsu, who survives a massacre that had wiped out his family. He spends 12 years to recover and rebuild his power, and with a new physical appearance, he returns to his enemies as their new friend, hoping to tear them apart one by one.

There is a quote in the drama that deeply resonates with Hu Ge: “You survived. Don’t waste your life.” That quote had alarmed Hu Ge.

“I survived because I was meant to do something. Or maybe there is a special mission I have to complete. In the past 12 years, whenever I start to think about this, I would feel remorse. It’s because I still can’t find what I have to do. Many people would say that I lived well in these 12 years. My career had been rising, I’ve earned a lot of money, and I’ve won many awards. But I can’t help but feel that those are not the reasons why I survived. I’m not living for those.”

To accommodate his recovery, filming for The Legend of the Condor Heroes was put on hold for an entire year. Hu Ge did not have the courage to face the film crew. He felt like a burden. When filming finally completed, Hu Ge broke down crying instead of feeling joy. “All those feelings of inconvenience, confusion, helplessness, and loneliness just poured out all at once.”

Now as one of China’s most popular actors, Hu Ge said he feels like his every move is being watched. “Right now, I want to be like Linghu Chong. I want freedom. I need to break away from the constraints. Maybe one day I’ll be able to change Linghu Chong to Guo Jing.”
