Ruco Chan Still Owes Phoebe Sin an Engagement Ring

Although Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) will be getting married in October, Ruco still owes girlfriend Phoebe Sin (單文柔)  an engagement ring. Speaking with Ming Pao Weekly, Phoebe revealed additional details behind how Ruco had proposed to her.

The first time Ruco proposed was on Phoebe’s birthday, April 19. He folded a heart-shaped paper ring and slipped it on Phoebe’s finger while she was asleep. When Phoebe awoke, she was shocked by his actions, but did not say yes. “When I first received the paper ring he folded, I was very shocked. Actually, the whole thing was too casual. To me, proposing is a very important memory. Couldn’t he put more thought into it? Although he was confident I would say yes at the time, I told him that the proposal didn’t count. I later asked him what he is going to do now, and he just said that he already said what he needed to! I didn’t want to continue pestering him about it, so in the end, the proposal issue was never brought up again.”

Although seeming like he did not think too much about the matter, Ruco actually had another plan for a second proposal. The perfect time seemed to arise when the couple planned their trip to England. Phoebe recalled, “A few days before the trip, he told me he had found a bridal shop and told me to go try on wedding dresses. I thought it was bizarre. Why should I go try on a wedding dress? He explained that since England is so beautiful, we should take some photos for memories, especially since he will be busy with work after and wouldn’t have time to go take engagement photos later. He used a lot of different excuses to get me to go. When we got to England, he had already pre-planned the whole thing. He found a street, rented a bus, and suddenly took out a bouquet of flowers to propose to me. At the time, I was really touched. I felt like he really took what I said to him to heart. I said yes then.”

Despite placing a lot of thought into the second proposal, Ruco still owes Phoebe an engagement ring, as he only proposed with a paper ring and a bouquet before. Though there was no ring, Phoebe said yes because of all the thought Ruco placed into proposing. Not only did he pre-plan everything, he also took into consideration the small details. The bus he rented specifically had the number “520”, which signifies “I love you”. He also personally selected four wedding dresses for Phoebe to try on.

Ruco also cannot contain his happiness and shared, “I’m very happy, because this has always been my life’s dream. I have wished for this day. Now, I’m finally getting married!”

Though the couple’s relationship started off rocky due to the public pressure, Phoebe expressed that they were very serious about each other from the start. “Although we have only dated for two years, I feel like we have dated for a long time. Actually, after dating for about six months, I already viewed him as Mr. Right, and he already saw me as a potential wife. We both knew in our hearts but didn’t say it aloud. We just wanted to spend more time together and get to know one another better to avoid anything bad from potentially happening in the future. The first thing is age, and the other thing is that there are many fluctuations in the entertainment industry. There were different issues we had to deal with every day that I was with him. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle it. Amidst announcing our relationship and him dealing with some family issues, we communicated and worked together through it all. He’s done and said some things that were very touching. Although getting married is happening earlier than I anticipated, I feel very blessed and sure about marrying him.”

  1. Let the children make fun of Ruco proposing with a paper ring. Let them have a Disneyland ball about him not giving Phoebe a diamond ring. Many couples get engaged without a ring being given. The wife gets the ring finally, during the wedding ceremony. There is nothing wrong with that . Phoebe seems to contradict herself. She said that she knew he was Mr Right after six months of dating. Yet she said no when he first proposed with a paper ring. That was a different and unique way of proposing. It seems that Phoebe was expecting some sappy, sickeningly sweet, over the top romantic proposal that can only be cooked up by a TVB writer with an active, romantic imagination. Won’t be surprised if she only accepted this proposal because she realized she will not get her impossibly sappy proposal. Asian men are not not known to be romantic. Someti mmm es they borrow sappy romantic gestures from movies and dramas. It is better to have a partner being their true earnest self than have a copied romantic scenario. The Ruco haters are going to tear him apart, all thanks to what Phoebe had to say.

    1. @kmfayb true, i would love to be proposed with a paper ring than an actual ring! have you seen the paper ring that ruco folded? it was actually nice..

  2. Uh, not a fan of his suit >__< it likes Ye Hua’s black costume with flower (I know it meant to show off his name, but it’s god awful lol). Ruco needs to learn less is more

  3. “When I first received the paper ring he folded, I was very shocked. Actually, the whole thing was too casual. To me, proposing is a very important memory. Couldn’t he put more thought into it?” That says it all about why Phoebe turned down Ruco’s first proposal. It was too casual, not grand enough. Yes, she did contradict herself. If she was sure he was Mr Right, she should have accepted his first proposal. She wanted grand and romantic. Her words pretty much conveyed that message. A good comprehensive understanding spells it out, plain and simple.

  4. They’re already cohabiting, so marriage is just to formalise their living arrangement and to have kids. Whether grand and/or romantic proposal or not, she will marry him eventually, Ruco knows that. Proposal with paper ring is unusual, doesn’t mean he didn’t put much thought into it but she didn’t appreciate it, sounds like princess syndrome where she expected him to make a a grand proposal via neonlight ads , on bended knees in a public place or such and with a huge sparkler thrown in, no less, so she can brag about it.

    1. @passingby even though they are cohabiting, it’s still nice to have a sweet proposal. to have a guy on one bended knee to propose is really memorable. the paper ring he folded is sweet even though it’s no sparkler. anyway, she got what she wanted – bended knee, flowers in a beautiful setting.
as for Ruco, I know I’m practically nuts over him. I would like to have a guy to plan something for the future but deciding over everything…maybe not my type.

      1. @janet72 agreed. I’m not a major fan of ruco by any means. but dragging phoebe through the mud for wanting a romantic proposal is silly.

everyone has their preferences and maybe she wants something sweet & memorable to look back on someday, which is understandable.

my hubby’s proposal wasn’t grand or romantic and to this day, i wished he did more haha. i love him regardless, but a little more effort would’ve made the proposal so much better! so good on her for making her standards known and making him step up to the plate.

  5. I don’t think either of them sound bad, this is just a sweet fluffy article about them. Ruco’s first proposal was charming in its intimacy, innocence and spontaneity. But I can see how the poor girl was like, “Hey, wait, let me wash my face first and get the sleep out of my eyes to see what this is about.”. I am sure Phoebe’s heart was soaring in the sky. She probably lovingly teased him for something grander, and there is nothing wrong with that.

He is very detailed oriented, professionally and privately, so his second proposal was something can be a movie finale. Lucky girl got 2 very romantic proposals.

Their recent interviews and photos have been so comfortable and fun. Ruco seems much more relaxed and both are glowing.
