Myolie Wu Is Happy, Confident, and Over 40

Life has never been better for Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), who is now in her early 40s. The former TVB actress doesn’t fear age—she fears time.

“Especially after having kids,” said the 41-year-old. “You’ll start to realize that every day is spent the same way, and that’s when you realize how fast time flies by.”

Myolie Wu, who won Best Performer on the second season of the Chinese competition Everybody Stand By <演員請就位>, is also not afraid of losing popularity or relevance. Happily married with a third child on the way, Myolie said her family is her biggest strength. “We all want to pursue something in life,” she said. “But in the end, all we want is love. Having that can really support the entirety of you.”

In 2015, Myolie married her non-celebrity boyfriend of one year, Philip Lee (李乘德). The couple are five years strong, and are parents to Brendan (born 2017), Ryan (born 2019), and upcoming baby number three. Having both family and career, Myolie has won in the game of life, it wasn’t an easy achievement to unlock.

When asked by interview Dingding Zhang (丁丁張) if she was happy, the interviewer was shocked by her answer. Some would cry, while others would say they don’t know, but Myolie gave a very thoughtful response. “If you asked me this ten years ago, I would definitely cry. I had a lot going on at the time. My performances weren’t getting a lot of approvals, and my relationship wasn’t what I thought it would be. I probably would’ve cried if you asked me that questions then, but I won’t today.”

Myolie didn’t drop the name, but there was no mistake that she was referring to her relationship with Bosco Wong (黃宗澤). They were in a relationship for seven years, and first started dating after their collaboration in 2005’s Wars of In-Laws <我的野蠻奶奶>. “Boscolie” went on to become one of TVB’s most popular couples, although they never admitted to dating. In 2011, when Myolie won Best Actress for her role in Curse of the Royal Harem <萬凰之王>, they finally confirmed their relationship. However, in the following year, the couple announced their peaceful split.

  1. I know a lot of people don’t like her and I’m not a fan of her acting but I don’t find her a bad person. Honestly, good for her. Being a woman and in the spotlight is hard and for her to be at the stage and be happy and confident, happy for her

    1. @tt23 it’s hard to feel happy for her
when she doesn’t have the skills needed to thrive in a competitive industry. It feels like imposter syndrome but we, as the audience, can actually see it. and then to be forced to accept her as a good actress by the media makes it even more difficult to swallow.

      1. @coralie the way you talk as if u r giving up a lot that she is acting. Nobody forced u to watch her and her acting is definitely good enough as proven from the various awards she won. Doesn’t hurt if u can try to be a better person.

      2. @skyblue she detracts from my enjoyment of any drama she’s in. so that limits my viewing options. and if everyone kept their negative critiques to themselves, there will never be any standard on which to judge skills. so instead of asking me to “be a better person,” ask yourself if you’re not just being biased and attacking others because you like myolie. that says more about you than me tbh.

      3. @coralie you’re not alone…I skipped every show where she’s lead and skip every scene she’s in if she’s not the lead.

Acting is an art, you either have it or you don’t have it. Then again, if it’s as abstract as any art is, it will attract different audience, just that Myolie is not the kind I’m looking for

      4. @coralie me being happy for her has nothing to do with her acting as the article talks about her being happy with life at the age of 40. Which I mention is hard for women (anyone really) so for her to be at the stage in her life that’s great and regardless of her acting, as human beings we should be able to be happy for her.

I think if an actress impacts you so greatly like you describe here then I think that’s another issue. I have actresses I don’t like and not everyone agrees but that’s just the media and you kind of just have to let it go. There’s always going to be that one actor that every pushes on you.

Anyways, that’s my two cents. Not trying to force or criticize you in anyway.

      5. @tt23 oh yeah that’s fair. I’m not saying I’m not happy for her personal life. She seems like a good, strong and decent person, but the coverage she gets in the media is disproportionate to the amount of talent she has. When I say it’s hard to feel happy for her, I meant as in happy for her success in this career she’s chosen, because really she’s not suitable for it.
