Rosita Kwok Opens Up About Her Growth as an Actress
Rising star Rosita Kwok (郭柏妍) is garnering attention for her role in as a cellist in TVB drama Heavenly Hand <麻雀樂團 >. While her musical talent and acting was given a spotlight in the drama, it was revealed that Rosita overcame many hardships to perfect her role and to avoid disappointing the production team.
Believing herself to still be an inexperienced actress, Rosita is grateful to be learning from Shaun Tam (譚俊彥), who plays her father in the drama and she described their experience as a “strict teacher who produces excellent teacher.” Rosita explained, “Every time he received a script, he would discuss the plot with me, even details about [my character]. He would analyze it with me all the way through. I’m so grateful to him. I never imagine I’d have such a senior who would explain everything to me.”
Overcoming Injuries to Learn the Cello
Rosita confesses that he didn’t know how to play the cello, but in order to play her character, she had to constantly practice. However, the process was not easy: “The cello was one of my character’s defining trait, but I studied on and off. In between my lessons, I went to Taiwan to film a travel program. By coincidence I fell while skateboarding, landed on my right hand and was injured for a long time.”
Rosita continued, When I played the cello, my wound opened up, and during that period I couldn’t practice. When I got better, I went to shoot a scene at the airport, and then I had to practice aerial yoga for the anniversary celebration. Luckily, a month before filming started, I could practice like crazy and practiced from early morning until midnight.”
While Rosita considered herself to have worked very hard, she still felt a lot pressure during filming and even cried from a small joke: “I practiced hard very hard, but maybe the performance turned out differently. People would say, why does it look like I’m slaughtering a chicken? I know they are just joking, but it really got to me, and I felt a bit sad.”
Grateful for Her Acting Opportunities
Since winning Miss Hong Kong second runner-up, Rosita has been landing many prominent such as Get on A Flat <下流上車族>, Anonymous Signal <奪命提示> and now Heavenly Hand. Looking back, Rosita never considered becoming an actress: “I honestly didn’t think about it. After I competed the Miss Hong Kong pageant, I didn’t think there would be that many acting opportunities. There were so many girls in my pageantry year, and I never imagined I’d get a role in Big White Duel 2 <白色強人II> . The producer gave me so many opportunities to try things out. After filming, I thought acting was fun. I really enjoyed the feeling of being someone else.”
Besides diligently studying various aspects of her roles, Rosita is incredibly dedicated to her acting, even to the point of insomnia. Rosita explained, “I once finished filming a scene I really enjoyed, and I found myself lying awake at home and wondering what I had done. I’ve discovered the joy of acting. I paid attention to my performances because I’m afraid I’m not improving. I carefully read everyone’s comments to see where I’m failing.”
Rosita once said that her lack of romantic experience is hindering her ability to portray the feeling of love. In order to overcome her weakness, Rosita filled in the gap by watching dramas. The actress shared, “It’s interesting to get inspiration from watching romance dramas, because there are so many different emotions to learn from. If I were to date someone, I would worry about if I am neglecting my work. I will let fate decide to see if I have a date. If not, I will just keep working hard to film.”
