“Triumph in the Skies 2” Finale Peaked at 41 Points

Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄2> ended its run on September 8 with a two-hour series finale. The popular drama has garnered generally positive reviews since its debut and consistently performed beyond expectations, making it 2013’s highest-rated series thus far. The final episode achieved an average of 38 points, peaking at 41 during its climatic plane landing scene and bringing in over 2.6 million viewers.

To celebrate their great success, Triumph in the Skies 2′s cast members gathered at a shopping mall on September 8 to watch the finale with thousands of fans. Chilam Cheung (張智霖) continued to be in character, channeling Captain Cool throughout the evening. While on stage, Chilam shared that he wants to act out his castle kissing scene with Fala Chen (陳法拉) once again, and immediately pulled Fala onto the stage and kissed her hand while on one knee. Fans were absolutely swooned, and when asked who they wish Holiday would end up with, many voted for the suave Captain.

Reflecting on his character’s lonesome fate, Chilam attributes it to the effects of karma. Cleverly using lyrics from Eason Chan’s (陳奕迅) theme song from the original Triumph in the Skies series, Chilam said, “At first, I was a playboy and had many girlfriends. At the end, I am left all alone. This is pretty realistic. Life is always like this. Things may not be perfect, but I will find you in the songs of the passing years.” Chilam added that Jayden Koo has brought him many young fans, and said that the character will forever belong to the viewers.

Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), who is currently working in China and unable to attend the celebration, said goodbye to his character Samuel Tong with a message on Weibo. He began his thoughts by saying, “Everything is over, hurry up and go home, your mom is calling you to eat….” He then jokingly yet lovingly referred to his fans as pigs, saying that people who are obsessed with idols are like pigs who roll around in muddy water thinking they are taking a bath. He added that, despite this, pigs are the only ones who will treat you like a real friend. Speaking about his character, Francis wrote, “Sam is a passing guest in my life, as are all of us in each others’ lives. Allow me to change my clothes before meeting all of you once again.”

The cast and crew also celebrated Nancy Wu’s (胡定欣) 32nd birthday at the event, singing birthday songs and encouraged her on-screen lover Him Law (羅仲謙) to give her a kiss. Afterwards, the entire team headed to Tsim Sha Tsui to continue their celebration over a meal of hot pot.

  1. The plane scene was definitely very intense despite some faltering from Fala’s part. Overall, the ending was definitely perfect. They did a great job(: Satisfied.

  2. I just wished there were more scenes for Isaac and Summer. I liked them as a couple. Coco and Jim Jim was also a good onscreen couple. Less Holiday would be a perfect series.

  3. The plane scene was actually more exciting than I thought it would be because it was obvious that they would survive. I thought that the pilots, crew, passengers, and everyone else not on the plane did a good job building the tension in that whole scene.

I thought the overall ending was really good because I like happy endings in general, but am still not a fan of Sam and Holiday ending up together. It bothered me that Sam said the only person who he thought of in that plane scene was Holiday. Not even a little thought for his family or Zoe?? I think it would have been easier to accept if Sam’s real love will always be Zoe and Holiday’s real love will always be Daniel, but Sam and Holiday both know and love each other through this bond.

  4. I think Fala Chen is not bad in the scenes with Francis; Her acting is natural and persuaded. I like her more than Myolie who has just one note faced expression. Francis Ng is my idol. His acting is perfect. Chi Lam is so cool and handsome. His acting is fabulous.

    1. In her defense, Myolie’s character was supposed to be shy and emotionless so that’s why, but personally, she does better with happy, chirpy characters.

      1. I agree. Summer has a boyish charatcer and often show no facial emotion whatsoever. Myolie is a very versatile actress.

      2. The writers made her not human like so hence she’s a character that lacks emotions. I personally don’t think the writers created a realistic Summer and Holiday character.

Summer should have a little more hatred for being abandoned. Holiday shouldn’t be so cheerful in the early episodes when she lost her man.

The flow of the character development seemed flawed in my opinion.

      3. They wrote her character that way. She does not show any of her emotions.

      4. Precisely! Thats what her character calls for!! And yes, i also prefer her chirpy self

  5. After this series, I like Fala so much. She is so natural&lovely in her acting. So loving with Francis. She does not deserve Francis. Actually I like her with Francis but later when I see Francis character is so cold blooded towards her, I don’t like anymore. Without Fala in this series, there is nothing to look forward.

  6. Prior to the release of about half the series, I was scared to watch this drama because of the negative comments being made about Fala. I seriously thought it was like having Toby Leung appear in a scene and fast forward that part till she disappears. And it turns out… Fala wasn’t THAT bad at all.

I really like the flirty moments with Holiday and Jayden. So cute.

    1. The only thing about Fala’s acting that really annoyed me wasn’t her non-crying but her very fake giggles. I’m guessing she was told that the character was the type to constantly giggle, but Fala most definitely is not and it sounded so jarring every single time. Other than that, she did OK. Acting-wise she wasn’t great but I didn’t think she stuck out. Especially not when there was so many noticable problems with the editing, script and B/C-actors that took up way too much screentime.

  7. I always wonder how ratings can peak at certain climactic moments only, do people just somehow find out that the climax will soon be shown to tune in and then tune out right after?

And how hard is it to be 2013 highest rated series anyway?

    1. yeh i also ask that, maybe some people have some kind of six sense when climatic moments will happen and then tune in and after that tune out, lol.

    2. but triumph2 won’t be too comfortable because all the heavyweights productions are just starting to air now until the anniversary starting with sniper, brother keeper, will power, on call 2 and my prime lady

  8. Chilam kissing Fala on stage was definitely not shown on TV…

The ending was okay actually. I am definitely Sam Gor hungover right now 🙁

  9. I love the ending! I”m happy that Sam didn’t end up alone! I really love Sam and Holiday as a couple! They’re so cute together 🙂

  10. I think most of us can agree this series did not live up to our expectations at all especially how the first installment affected us but this drama was ok, way too draggy at some points. A few of the characters and relationships were underdeveloped.

  11. i think the climax of the plane in mayday scene was too short and not dramatic enough, its too simple.overall this serie is all about love relationships and too little about aircraft, its not interesting to watch it.

  12. there are too much scenes for holiday. really good treatment for someone who left tvb! the series should’ve develop more on summer, coco and roy who have better actings and more interesting roles!

    1. Ya sort of like overdose with Holiday. I like more of others. Should develop a more rounded & less time- wasting story on summer/Isaac.

  13. i think this was ron best performance he was funny, mature and natural

  14. LOL I guess I’m in the minority in thinking that this series and ending was garbage.

  15. It is good to have part three for this series with both Francis Ng and Chilam Cheung attending because these actors are so great in acting. The series is good to watch. I love the series ending; Holiday has made a good decision when she choose Sam over Captain Cool.

  16. TITS2 wasn’t horrible…it wasn’t great either.

In short, it is due to the following:
    – too many sideline stories (Apple [wtf did she come from? And WHY is she part this series at all?], Tucker, Fergus [wasted air time to be SUPER honest], Win, Hero, Pink, Clever)
    – spent way too much time on relationships and not on the aviation part like the first series
    – too little camera time between the actual lead characters in the series
    – Summer looked constipated half the time
    – Jayden/Holiday scenes were cut
    – The original Samuel Tong was no longer the sweet and subtle Samuel Tong, but a strict old dude who magically didn’t seem to have a problem dating a super young girl anymore
    – Absence of the original S4 and Belle… they didn’t even mention them in the series. The smart thing they should have done is to acknowledge them and give the audience a sense of reason why they aren’t around anymore (for example: Belle wasn’t in HK anymore because she got married and is traveling the world or something and Bosco and Sam had different home bases other than HK OR SOMETHING)
    – Ron’s English was terrible
    – Francis’ English was better than Ron’s, but I still can’t really understand him
    – Pal Sinn really annoyed the crap out of me.

    1. Actually I quite enjoy all the sideline stories. It’s funny and some are touching as well.
-Apple, Fergus and Tucker. At the hotel wheee Tucker imagined himself pushed Fergus into the pool, funny!
-Coco, Colby, Victor, Nick and HimHim, I find the relationship between them are very toyching. Especially the part when Colby+Victor thought of giving up on the baby and Coco got so miserable and Nick called her. How regret and she doubts her decision to give up such a good man.
      – Pink Pink, Hero and Paul also so funny. Especially the part where Hero admit himself is Pink’s bf, Paul reaction is super hilarious!
-Josie, Issac and Summer. Honestly for a newbie, I quite enjoy Josie acting as a sickling gal. Just like what Sam said, she looks like a gal that needed to be protected. Too bad previously because of her gossips where she used Ron’s name, hinting several times they were an item, did minus some point.
-Heather, Mr.King and Roy, I super enjoy their triangle relationship!

      1. Yen: my points was to show how different the 2nd installment was. They clearly had success for a reason but didn’t creatively recycle that into something what TITS2 could have been.

Tucker was funny in that 1 scene but it is not enough to justify their story. Sorry…it’s also not enough to save the reason why they were there. And the fact that Toby looks older than Myolie and Fala didn’t help the story in my opinion.

Myolie is supposed to look like that to image a tomboy?! Lol I’m sorry…I didn’t know all tomboys are supposed to look constipated -_-

I agree with the coco part and heather/roy/adrian as I never complained about them?

As for aviation, speak for yourself? Just because you may not be interested doesn’t mean the audience isn’t. The first installment had many things to do with aviation and the airport with its services and how the pilot system worked and IT STILL garnered much success.

And yes Zoe was very yiung when they dated. Do you not remember he was extremely hesitant and often callef her a young girl? It was her persist attitude and her faithfulness that changed his mind. I just find it weird he went for Holiday…a even younger girl who is immature.

And finally yes, sure, Roy and sams English is fine for a Cantonese drama..but it doesn’t mean I can’t complain how bad it is especially when they are pilots who travel to europe all the time.

    2. 2.And honestly, I’m not sure of others but for me why the needs spent so much time on the aviation parts?! As if we really understand a thing they were saying/doing or we will relate/ in use of those stuffs.
3.too little camera time? all the leads meet up with each other most the time in the series, it just that this series is occupied with a lot of leads!
4.Summer character is supposed to be that way. She is tomboyish and basically a loner, she keeps everything to herself till she forgives Jayden and fall in love with Issac. I find Myolie acted well as Summer and I find her very pretty, cool and cute.
      5. Not only Jayden/Holiday scenes got cut. If u watch their making, I saw Power Chan too but I don’t see him at all in the series.
      6. Of course Sam isn’t the same anymore. Not only he grows older but the same time he losses his wife. Heart aching life experiences changes someone. And btw, isn’t Zoe so much younger when Sam dating her? So why is that a problem with him being with Holiday?
      7. Absence of the S4 but as Roy back to Skylette then we should know in those years, ppls take their different ways.
      8. Ron and Francis English is acceptable for a CANTONESE DRAMA.
      9. Pal Sinn, he is HILARIOUS!!! Maybe different ppl different standard but I really love him a lot! He is so funny from the drama he with Roger as “Tai Suk” and now his Mr.King also so funny!
I love the way he reacted when he found out about Pink and Hero. How he lecture her in their house, those conversation is so funny! And of course between him, Roy and Heather, I love it

    3. A lot of the side-stories could actually have been interesting… in a different show! The problem was when there was spent time developing these side storylines, when the main storylines were dragging on. Even though people claim there was lots of Holiday scenes or whatever, I don’t even recall them because NOTHING HAPPENED! Yes, you have 43 episodes so you don’t have to move the plot at breakneck speed but be consistent!

The love triangles/romances in the show were ALL underdeveloped. Why did Jim Jim love Coco? Because he had been in love with her since childhood? Talk about lazy writing! Jayden/Holiday was seriously underdeveloped because they cut so many of Jayden’s scenes. Did Holiday ever have genuine feelings for him? When did he fall for her? Issac and Summer’s obstacle was so ridiculous. But the way Issac got prissy about it was even more ridiculous! Obviously Roy isn’t the playboy the show wanted us to think in the beginning – but how ridiculous is it that he’s dating two girls because he couldn’t choose. Only to fall madly in love with a reluctant Heather? And why the hell was the media (and Heather) kicking up a fuss about Heather being older than Roy when the real life age difference is only 1 year? In the meantime, no one ever raises the question that there’s at least 15 years (20 irl) between Sam and Holiday?! And I saved those last. The amount of people cooing over how cute they were must be the same type of people who think Twilight is ~romantic RME.

Oh yeah, and the reason for why Francis is indecipherable in English is because he mumbles like crazy! I remember in one of the last episodes he was chewing while talking and I literally screamed “stop chewing!” It’s already hard enough to understand him when he normally talks.

      1. Advo,

“The amount of people cooing over how cute they were must be the same type of people who think Twilight is ~romantic RME.”

Just ignore those people cooing over how cute they were. Imagine that Fala Chen’s character in real life is an ugly and fat lady, Chilam’s is an ugly womanizer, and Francis is a fat uncle, nobody will think they are cute. The entertainment industry is all about fantasy~~~

      2. COMPLETELY agree re: the underdevelopment of all the love relationships. Frustrating to watch.

    4. Apple exists bc of Toby. I honestly think the editing was in favor of her thanks to her dad, lol

    5. sureeez
Agree with all your reasons. I did not enjoy the sideline stories either. As a matter of fact, I skipped them all.

      1. Just want to add one more thing ………. personally I think Francis’ English is pretty bad, same with Kenneth’s and Ron’s. They should speak better English if they were pilots.

  17. I love this ending, Holiday and Sam is a cute couple, love them together. I’m glad she choose Sam 🙂 but Jayden also good and handsome, like Chilam said Jayden is a playboy character so usually end up a lone…and Chilam act really good in this drama.
Ron, Kenneth also enjoyable to watch, overall I think this drama is awesome and have perfect ending 🙂

  18. I reckon either someone should have died in the plane scene and made it a catstrophic landing. Would’ve been the best, since no one expected it

    1. I think the reason that the plane didnt have a catastrophic landing is because tvb is too cheap to fork out the money to create the cg of the crash. I mean their cg plane looks just like simulation

  19. does anyone know where to download the song played when sam and holiday kissed in ep 43? 🙂

  20. It peaked at 41 point because most people skipped the other pointless 20 episodes

  21. Sam and Holiday had bad chemistry, they look like father and daughter and feels gross to watch.

  22. Holiday didn’t deserve either Sam or Jayden. I hated her character. She was so cheap. Yea, I wanted Sam’s ultimate love to be Zoe until the end. And Jayden with the cool Sharon Chan. Jim Jim and CoCo’s relationship was the only love line I enjoyed. I don’t see any chemistry between Roy and Myolie nor Francis and Fala. And I have no idea why Jayden love her so much? Probably because she was the first girl who dumped him. Male ego for a playboy.

    1. Jayden loves her so much bc they enjoy the life they live for..the thrills, carefree lifestyle, do whatever you want…you see how she evolves after finding her purpose in life. She pick Sam bc they connect/bond over the deaths of their significant loved ones…understanding each other’s loss.

  23. I hate teh ending. The whole series has been a blur. What the heck!!!

    1. I felt the same way .. everything was thrown at your face. The development of the storyline wasn’t too well written

  24. I swear, most of you that are drooling over this series only find its appeal in the appearance of the actors and the underdeveloped love stories. Those whom appreciate great acting, developed plot, and witty script-writing would find this series lacking, distasteful, and completely rubbish. They should’ve never made a sequel to TITS, as they’ve completely ruin this franchise.

    1. @Anon: Amen and well-said! I was never a fan of the original TITS (thank God!!!), so in a way, the success or failure of the sequel doesn’t matter as much to me personally, but for those who waited 10 years for such a disappointing series, I can imagine getting ticked off at TVB for ruining yet another franchise (when does it ever end??).

For as long as TITS2 had been airing, both TVB as well as the Media had been ‘bragging’ about how “successful” the sequel was and how much the audiences love the series…also all the ‘bragging’ about the so-called ‘high ratings’ (compared with the dismal ratings BAW and BB got, every series is high!!) etc….and now, due to the ‘success’ of the sequel, TVB intends to make a movie and perhaps another sequel to ‘add’ to the franchise (yup, let’s milk the cash cow dry, just like they did with the Laughing Gor thing)….well, if that’s what majority of the audiences want, then fine. The minority audiences like me who actually appreciate quality acting and well-written scripts can go satisfy our ‘quality production’ craving elsewhere…LOL!

      1. I hate TVB’s way of conducting business. I think they’re more ruthless than Hollywood when it comes to ruining a perfectly great thing. HKTV is my hope and dream of ever seeing quality produced drama series again. But for now, I must venture to Korea for some decent dramas with great actors with decent scripts and plots (how sad!) cause most TVB productions are not watchable.

    2. @Anon,

I have not seen this series yet but I agree with you Anon and always tell the viewers and fans to not only go for the cast, but must go for the plot, good script, and other things. However, many fans and viewers just blindly go for the cast just to get disappointed… That happens again and again but yet people never learn from it.

By the way, I have seen many Korean series and must say most of them are not so great at all. The actors/actresses may act better in some cases, however, the plot and script for many of the series are not so great at all. Many of them get redundant, long, draggy and boring too. But that’s just my opinion. I think TVB series are still better in the sense that they are more straight forward and to the point than Korean series are in general.

  25. TITS 1 and 2 will forever be my favorite drama. Love it so much that I almost accepted the offer to an aviation school. Had I not listened to my parents, I would have been the only female cadet in the class like holiday and zita….hehe. TITS2, you’ve reminded me my dream that I’ve forgotten for so long.

  26. I want to see Jayden and holiday ending up together so badly. Loved this series a lot.missing it now.

  27. I did not see the part with Summer in the wedding dress as shown in the opening. :c

  28. 41 points for this mediocre love-triangle-rectangle-what-have-you-shape series??? So happy that it’s finally over, yippee!!!

  29. I quite liked this series despite all the press about bad acting etc…. I thought Fala did better towards the mid-end of the series.

I was a little sad to see that Jayden was left alone at the end… it appears true that when you’re cool and distant – yes, you have fun and you never get your heart truly broken; but you also end up alone in the end.

  30. Hi, I’m not chinese but I’ve been a huge fan of tvb dramas for over 15yrs. I normally watch the translated version in Vietnamese and this time watching English subtitles has brought so much happiness and emotions. Hence having to re-watch TITS1 again and TITS2, I can see Ron’s acting skills has improved drastically, its ashamed Myolio’s character is too cold and unemotional at times. Both Ron and Myolio really look cute together. I love and prefer Francis acting on screens lover with Fala more than previous TITS1 with Myolio. Chiliam is so handsome but my heart still falls for Francis from ten years ago. Nany Wu and Him Law are so adorable too. Altogether I think all actors and actresses did a fantastic job. “Sam and Holiday” end up being together was the best happy ending! =)

  31. A lot of you hated the ending and I don’t know for what reasons. But I personally hated the ending wasn’t because Jayden was alone, or the delusional thinking that Myolie should paired up with Sam etc. But as a girl, I was kinda disappointed and somewhat offended that Holiday end up choosing Sam at the end. I love Sam, I really do… but if I were to stand in Holiday position, I would think twice about dating a man who takes no initiative in the relationship and one who’s constantly asking for too much. Yes, Sam is a great friend and probably a great working partner, but definitely not a co-worker and a boyfriend.

The moment when Holiday ask Sam if he’ll ask her to stay if she leaves.. and Sam didn’t answer, I call it the end of them. I don’t understand why Holiday would go back to him.

And the thing I dislike the most about the ending is the fact that the writer successfully paired them up after all at the end, but they didn’t really solve the real issue between Holiday and Sam. The real issue is that they both have very different opinion, drastic difference in thinking and such. I don’t think this problem is solvable because it’s in the blood… Right, it was a happy ending and hopefully a happy-ever-after future for them… But i’m sure most of us can foresee their future together with more quarrels and never ending fights.
