Dante Lam’s “That Demon Within” Filled With Gunfights and Explosive Action

Director Dante Lam’s  (林超賢) new film, That Demon Within <魔警>, promises to thrill audiences with its explosive action scenes. As numerous crossfire and explosion scenes are planned, Emperor Motion Pictures (EMP) has to apply for road closure from the Hong Kong authorities more than 2 months before filming begins.

That Demon Within stars Nick Cheung (張家輝), Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), Ken Wong (王合喜) and Deep Ng (吳浩康). Filming started in January, and EMP finally received approval for the use of a flyover for an explosion scene after several rejections, with the condition that no pavements nor roads should be damaged as a result of the filming. To comply with the conditions, EMP spent $1.5 million HKD to film this scene in 3 days.

Crossfire Draws Drivers’ Attention

At the scene, Nick Cheung first appeared in a black mask, but later changed to a monstrous-looking helmet after engaging in a crossfire with Daniel Wu and Ken Wong who were in police uniforms. Even though Nick his accomplices with him, he appeared to be losing and retreating. The explosive sounds of the firearms caused many drivers on the other side of the road, which was not closed to traffic, to slow down and stare. After every shot, Nick would walk over to Dante’s side to watch the playback, and sometimes had deep discussions with the director.

In another scene the following day, arrangement was made for the rear of a private car to be on fire. A spark must have flown and hit Daniel on his left hand which caused his pinky finger to bleed. The workers hurriedly rushed to his side with a first-aid box. Fortunately, it looked to be a minor injury because after the bandage and a short break, Daniel was up on his feet again.

Winding Down Over the Upcoming Long Weekend

Nick attributed the success of the filming to the help from the government authorities as well as the company for being able to provide enough resources. The next location they are heading to is the funeral parlor. Nick proclaimed, “We are not afraid! We are brave men. Furthermore, we’re there for work and will only stay for a short while.”

Not only does Nick handle two different characters in the show itself, he is currently running between the sets of two movies – That Demon Within and The Cartel War <掃毒>. As the three characters are very different, Nick has to juggle between the psychological mindset of the characters. Nick revealed that he will take a short break during the Lunar New Year holiday to unwind.
