C AllStar Album “Cantopopsibility” Has Cantopop Pride

Acclaimed Hong Kong all-male vocal group, C AllStar, is back in business after a year of hiatus in the music industry. Answering the call to save the struggling Cantopop industry, which has been in decline since the early millennium, C Allstar released their fifth album Cantopopsibility, a full-length studio record that explores the versatility and creativeness of Cantonese pop music.

The album, published by Media Asia Music and produced by Kingdom C, was released on October 4, 2013. Consisting of 12 tracks that play to over 46 minutes, C AllStar experimented the versatility of Cantopop by utilizing several music genres and styles, which includes new age, trance cha-cha, soulhouse, jazz, soul, rock, bossa nova, R&B, and pop.

Complementing the experimental theme of the album, the four members of C AllStar posed as scientists for the album cover of Cantopopsibility. Through the album, C AllStar hopes to promote new musical styles to their fans breathe new life in Cantopop music.

The lead single off the album, “Music Colony” <音樂殖民地> summarizes the historical development of music through the years while dropping hints of Hong Kong’s own colonial history. Their third plug, “Old Melodies” <老調兒>, touches on the nostalgia of minor Hong Kong music with its modern take on traditional Chinese instruments. The song “Mistake” <差詞> discusses about the impressive difficulty of the Cantonese language, while “Our Woodstock” <我們的胡士托> is written as a tribute for music veterans.

In addition, the group showcased their acapella talent with their self-composed song “Free Orbit” <自由軌道>. Andy Hui’s (許志安) voice was also featured in the track, “We Are Alike” <惺惺相惜>, which was co-written by FAMA’s C Kwan (C君).

  1. We need more earnest efforts such as C AllStar’s new album to bring back Cantopop! Listening to their tracks reminded me of the 90s, when Cantopop singers has such passion in their music.

  2. Some of the songs and vocals were terrible. I see what you mean about a hint of the 90s in some of the tracks though.

  3. Finally know the themesong of ‘We Are Family’ is called ‘大同’ and sung by C-AllStar.

    I heard this song every time I listen to ‘We Are Family’. Some of the performer in the MV are hosts of ‘We Are Family’.
