Andy Lau and Sean Lau on Working Together Again in 18 Years

Starring in Chinese New Year comedy Fat Choi Spirit <嚦咕嚦咕新年財> 18 years ago, Andy Lau (劉德華) and Sean Lau (劉青雲) surprisingly did not have a chance to collaborate again together until Shock Wave 2 <拆彈專家2>. Facing off in the film as frenemies, the two veteran actors were excited to rekindle their onscreen sparks again, and reconnected like old friends off set.

Unspoken Chemistry Between Actors

Despite the long lapse since they filmed together, the two actors shared the same philosophy on set. The chemistry between individuals can sometimes be magical, said Andy, who learned this during his first years in the industry acting alongside Chow Yun Fat (周潤發).  “Every time I work with different actors, it was similar to how I felt the strong onscreen vibes back then with Fat Gor and others.” Andy recalled a particular scene between Sean and actress Ni Ni (倪妮) which impressed him on set, and exclaimed that Shockwave 2 will deliver plenty of unexpected surprises thanks to the hard work and acting sparks between the cast.

Most Memorable Scene

In Shock Wave 2, Andy Lau plays a former bomb disposal expert who is suspected of being part of a terrorist attack. Featuring many gunfights, explosive and fighting sequences, Sean brought up a rescue scene where the duo were on a delivery van, which was then hoisted to an eight-story-tall height. He shared, “Although the director told us we would be hoisted, he didn’t mention how high. During filming, it was just ‘1,2,3!’ and we went up. I thought we would be lifted up slowly and the scene would require a few tries, but it was completed in just one take.”

Andy pointed out how safety precautions were much stricter now, “Though it was very fast, but the action director and team were very meticulous and would check for damage to the hoist cable before each scene. In the past, filming was like risking your life–now I feel really secure and taken care of.”
