C-drama “Detective L” Stuns with High Production Value

Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, the web drama Detective L <紳探> is just dropping jaws, and there’s no surprise as to why.

Set in 1930’s Shanghai, Detective L follows a team of unlikely detectives who come together to solve an intriguing crime case plaguing the growing and ever-bustling city. 1930’s Shanghai was a city where the east met the west, where the extreme poor and extreme rich coexisted.

With high production values with exceptional care in setting the series’ artistic tone, Detective L was a pleasant surprise for many viewers. Netizens described the show to be as beautiful as a movie—dark grays and blues were the main color palettes for the show, to represent the city’s dramatic contrast in grandeur and inhospitality. The extra splash of yellow strengthens the overall cold tone.

Detective L stars Bai Yu (白宇) as the police consultant Luo Fei and Una You (尤靖茹) as Detective Qin Xiaoman.

Responses

  1. Bai Yu fits very well with dramas in this time period. Haven’t seen the show but the sets and color palettes are very reminiscent of 镇魂.

  2. The colour palettes are indeed beautiful. if only all Chinese dramas put in the same effort.

  3. He and Zhu Yilong were so awesome in Guardian even though that show was horribly made, I look forward to watching this show, and any future work from both him and ZYL. I heard Det. L’s set up borrows a lot from BBC’s Sherlock but hopefully that ends up being a good thing instead of coming off as a low grade rip off.
