Cathryn Li Reveals Attempted Suicide

Did the emotional pressure of maintaining a perfect image drive the Malaysian influencer to try and end it all?

Known for her sexy outfits during piano performances, Malaysian pianist and actress/ social influencer Cathryn Li (李元玲), was met with a barrage of criticism in recent days which shockingly prompted her to attempt suicide.

Attacked for Not Playing by Unwritten Rules?

Cathryn had been introduced into the entertainment industry by Jersey Chong (张馨灵), an artiste manager at Fan Bingbing‘s (范冰冰) studio. Cathryn was also the student of Chinese pianist Li Yundi (李雲迪), and was linked with actor Ron Ng (吳卓羲) in 2012.

Recently, Cathryn stormed off a Facebook live interview when her keyboard performance went off-key, evoking hurtful comments from netizens who lambasted her for having “low EQ.” She was also languished for her “lousy working attitude” such as arriving late and being absent for work, causing the producer to blacklist her.

However, Cathryn rebutted these accusations, and said that she was being targeted for refusing to agree to go for meals and play by unwritten rules in the entertainment industry.

Attempted Suicide

On March 13, Cathryn updated her social media with a photo of her injured neck region which had been stained with blood, revealing that she had tried to hang herself from being emotionally wretched.

“Last night, my emotions got the better of me, and I hung up the cables while thinking of ending all this pain. The cables were too thin and ended up snapping. Even as I thought of dying, I feared getting bashed yet again, for not killing myself successfully, and struggled with my emotions for the entire night. It takes courage to end one’s life and even more courage to live,” the 31-year-old wrote.

Explaining what drove her to try and kill herself, she continued, “My every move is continuously magnified and criticized, with merciless hounding by the press, followed by never-ending waves of bullying like a tsunami.”

Confessing her imperfections, Cathryn said she has her flaws too and does not dare to live up to the “goddess” label. “Everyone expects me to be high up on a pedestal of perfection, with goddess-like EQ, flawless physique, and talents. I’ve tried to keep up by showing my best side and putting my best feet forward. I have apologized multiple times for my imperfections. But sometimes when I make a little mistake, or lose control of my emotions once, the huge personal attacks for days on end get so suffocating it’s as if they’re trying to kill me. There’re also some people who want to raise their own popularity by bashing me. I can’t get out and also have no way back. I’m also a normal person–I feel fearful and I am tired. Even the strongest spirits will tumble.”

Met with encouraging and concerned comments from netizens, Cathryn’s post and photos were later removed.

  1. I hope she is seeking proper treatment from medical professionals. She should probably take a break away from social media since it is such a trigger.

  2. Not many people are suitable to be in the limelight…it takes alot of mental strength…Hope she does what is best for her own future…and get help. One cannot please everyone.

  3. I watched the Facebook live and thought the hosts messed up. I’m not a musician so I can’t really comment much. She has repeatedly refused to play and they should give her a break or at least, gave her heads up so she can prepare in advance. I agreed with her- there was too much of their singing and what did they expect her to do while they are singing? The whole session was two hours and the questions they were asking were not very engaging! I don’t know if they piggybacking on her popularity or it was the other way round.
Haters going hate and if such comments could trigger her, she should really stay off the public eyes. She can’t actually expect everyone to love her?

  4. So I decided to watch the whole video… To be honest they did what most hosts did… They didn’t mean to embarrass her or anything. What happened was she looked on her cell phone and notice people bashing, so she flipped out. The 3 hosts even said they were getting bash themselves too just ignore them but she couldn’t handle it. I honestly don’t think she should be in the entertainment industry.

  5. She needs help and need to stay out of the “limelight”!
I empathize with her, but why is it ONLY a photo is “shared”? Please take a closer look, get a friend in forensics to see where the suicide hang line is – it is FAKE! JUST do a simple demo on yourself WITHOUT hanging… you will realize that the real line should be MUSH higher up, nearer to the jaw line.. NOT A STRAIGHTLINE like how she has shared. #Peaceout
