Check Out These Upcoming Chinese December Dramas
December is not known for being a high-profile month for television dramas in Mainland China, but with dramas like Nirvana in Fire II and Great Expectations coming just around the corner, this month is looking to be a competitive time for Chinese TV.
Nirvana in Fire II <琅琊榜之风起长林>
The sequel of the hit 2015 television series will be premiering on December 18, 2017 on Beijing TV and Dragon TV. Starring Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明), Liu Haoran (刘昊然), Tong Liya (佟丽娅), and Zhang Huiwen (张慧雯), Nirvana in Fire II is set after the events of the original series, and centers on a conspiracy that is plaguing the Langya Hall.
Although original cast members such as Hu Ge (胡歌), Liu Tao (刘涛) and Wang Kai (王凯) will not be returning for the sequel, the high-profile casting of Huang Xiaoming is putting the drama on everyone’s radar. Nirvana in Fire 2 is also written and produced by the same creators who made the first series, and a new hit may be in their hands.
Great Expectations <远大前程>
This classy, pre-modern drama is the serial scriptwriting debut of Chen Sicheng (陈思诚), who also produces and stars on the show. Co-starring big names Justin Yuan Hong (袁弘), Amber Kuo (郭采洁), and Sicheng’s real-life wife Tong Liya (who will also be starring in Nirvana in Fire II), Great Expectations is a business thriller set in Republican-era Shanghai. It will be premiering on December 15, 2017 on Hunan TV.
Wild Rose <红蔷薇>
Going head-to-head with Nirvana in Fire II is the period romance Wild Rose, which premieres on Jiangsu TV on December 18, 2017. Wild Rose stars So Young’s <致我们终将逝去的青春> Yang Zishan (杨子姗) and The Romance of the Condor Heroes’ <神雕侠侣> Chen Xiao (陈晓) as a pair of spies who fall in love in the midst of war.
Other dramas that are also airing in December include As Flowers Fade and Fly Across the Sky <花谢花飞花满天> starring Peter Ho (何潤東) and Viann Zhang (張馨予); Police Beauty and K9: Journey Again <警花与警犬之再上征程> starring Yu Hewei (于和伟) and Hou Mengsha (侯梦莎); and My Aunt <我的小姨> starring Tong Lei (童蕾) and Zhu Yongteng (朱泳腾).
