Wang Kai Will Return for “Nirvana in Fire 2”

Though the original cast may not return for the second series of Nirvana in Fire <琅琊榜>, you can count on Wang Kai (王凱) in making a comeback.

According to the show’s producer Hou Hongliang (侯鸿亮), Wang Kai, who portrayed Prince Jing in the original series, will be returning to star in the sequel this November. Nirvana in Fire 2, a continuation of the first drama, will feature a new lead of characters.

Nirvana in Fire, a historical wuxia drama starring Hu Ge (胡歌), Liu Tao (刘涛), Jin Dong (靳东), and Wang Kai, was one of the most popular television dramas to be released last year in China. It won numerous awards, broke online viewership ratings, and garnered millions of followers on social media.

The crew of Nirvana in Fire started production on the sequel soon after snagging an exclusive deal with streaming site iQIYI earlier this year. Nirvana in Fire 2 will officially start shooting this November.

According to Hou, Nirvana in Fire 2 will take place after the events of the original series, and will continue to revolve its plot around the Langya Hall. The sequel series will be split into two separate stories, with each story being 15 episodes along. The first part will cover about 1-2 years of story, while the second part will span 3-4 years.

Hou said the script for Nirvana in Fire 2 is not completed, but did assure that everything will be finalized by the time the show turns on its cameras for November’s principal photography.

As for whether or not some of the original cast members would return, Hou said, “If there is a suitable opportunity, of course I would like Hu Ge, Jin Dong, Wang Kai, and them to return. However, it also depends on whether or not the project suits them, because each of them can definitely carry their own shows now.”

Hu Ge, Jin Dong, and Wang Kai have been pushed to superstardom after the release of Nirvana in Fire last September, so getting the three to come back for the sequel would be difficult. According to Chinese media, the studios of Nirvana in Fire 2 still hasn’t finalized the final cast list due to the script being incomplete; nonetheless, Hou did confirm in a later report that Wang Kai will be returning.
