Wang Kai to Star in “Held in the Lonely Castle”

Wang Kai (王凯) fans will be excited to hear that he has been confirmed to star in the upcoming period drama, Held in the Lonely Castle <孤城闭>, based on the popular web novel of the same name by Milan Lady.

The drama revolves around the complex political and romantic relationships within the royal court, with Wang Kai taking on the role of Emperor Renzong of Song, and is expected to be 55 episodes long. It will be directed by Zhang Kaizhou (张开宙) and written by Zhu Zhu (朱朱), who was also the screenwriter for another Wang Kai drama, When a Snail Falls in Love <如果蜗牛有爱情>.

The story is set against the backdrop of a complicated political conflict between the progressive and conservative factions of the royal court. It begins with the Emperor Renzong of Song, who, after discovering that his biological mother was in fact Li Lanhui (a maid of the Empress Dowager), betroths his princess daughter to the son of the Li family, in an effort to repay his biological mother’s family. When the unhappy princess later runs away from her new husband with the help of her eunuch (with whom she has in fact developed a close relationship with), the Emperor must then choose between the stability of his government (and their criticisms about the princess’ rash actions), and his daughter’s happiness.
