Chilam Cheung Criticized as Ungracious in TV King Loss
Chilam Cheung’s (張智霖) popularity rose to unprecedented levels after the broadcast of Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II>, helping him win Best Actor awards in China and Malaysia. Speculated by the media to repeat the win in Hong Kong, Chilam surprisingly lost the TV King award to Dayo Wong (黃子華). Receiving only the Most Popular Male Character award, Chilam appeared to be disappointed. Pointing to his controversial acceptance award speech, netizens criticized Chilam for behaving ungraciously.
Ill-mannered Acceptance Speech?
“Does TVB not like me? Is it only possible to win the award through popular votes? Biological children are lovable, but when appearing at the necessary and right time, loyal children are very important too!” Chilam said on stage when he received the Most Popular Male Character award at the 2013 TVB Anniversary Awards.
Chilam’s acceptance speech hinted that he was dissatisfied in only receiving a consolation prize. He had declined a lucrative promotional appearance fee of $500,000 HKD to appear at the Anniversary Awards ceremony. Although he is a non-managed artist, Chilam has loyal ties to TVB and often filmed dramas with the station. After the Anniversary Awards ceremony concluded, Chilam met with fans who waited outside TVB Studios and spoke with The Scoop <東張西望>. However, he left without speaking with reporters from TVB’s official magazine publication, which normally interviewed the winners after the Anniversary Awards.
Netizens criticized Chilam for his discourteous acceptance award speech. One person wrote, “It’s already good to win the Most Popular Male Character award! On stage, you spoke so ungraciously! You can’t even act, that’s why you lost [TV King]!”
However, was Chilam only attempting a wry joke when he said TVB did not like him enough to give him the Best Actor Award? Good friend, Christine Ng (伍詠薇), quickly came to his defense on Weibo, “I don’t think that he’s ungracious. Mr. Cheung is definitely a humorous, gracious, and loyal artist.”
Triumph in the Skies 2 star, Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), was asked to comment on his and Chilam’s loss in Best Actor. Francis said, “Of course there are flaws and reasons!”
Anita Asks Chilam to Be Thankful
Chilam’s wife, Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), also provided words of encouragement despite his Best Actor loss. Anita wrote on her Weibo blog, “You were very, very handsome today! Winning the audience’s favor and admiration, this is what an actor needs. Very thankful!” Anita reminded Chilam that with 77,948 viewers voting for his Most Popular Male Character win, there is already good reason to celebrate.
The couple had a bet earlier, and Anita believed that he would not win Best Actor at the TVB Anniversary Awards. Chilam followed through on losing the bet and bought Anita a diamond bracelet.

I actually think that Chilam was referring to both himself and Dayo when he meade the non-biological children comment. But no excuse for his behavior after the ceremony though. 🙂
Actually Dayo is a Biological child. It’s just that he wasn’t on screen a lot earlier in his career. He was a PA, a script writer, even a DJ. He had many roles within TVB just not on screen. It was totally sour grapes on behalf of Chilam.
Stop over reacting, I don’t think it is sour grapes on his behalf, i think he is just saying what other people have been to scare to say about tvb in the pass. There has always been a element of favouring their “own biological children” at tvb.
There’s a video showing that Chilam did ask if all the reporters are there (with the fans out there where he opened the champagne blah blah) then he got an answer that ‘ Yes, all the reporters are here, no need to go back to the studio’. Clearly he was unaware about the TVB magazine interview. That after-ceremony video showed a lot about Chilam, he looked happy, but a lot of them just decided to make negative statements about him, which is normal since it’s an annual thingy and the highest honor in TVB.
Chi Lam is NOT a very good speaker to begin with. He has the vibe of arrogance and dry humor. How can he puts himself above Francis Ng, thinking to get the BA. If he wins over Francis, that’s rigged! And giving him this award, is the most suitable one. His Jayden Koo character was indeed, the MOST POPULAR MALE CHARACTER what~ Anyways, part of his speech was quite genuine.. where he thanked Francis Ng.

Hehe, if you noticed TVB started to act very smart. They started to appreciate more people especially the old actors and actresses. All of them felt very touching. And me too when they receiving the awards. Because recently of the HKTV as rivalry. But i forever support TVB and will do whatever it takes to make sure TVB forever and ever. And cannot let others to ruin the industry. I’ve never liked him, his acting, or his looks, and I like him even less now after his sarcasm-laced acceptance speech. Neither do I like his wife, whose “lang lang” nickname is something I have never been able to fathom, since she is far from being that.

I felt his sarcasm there and then live too. Frankly, it was kind of rude of him though. Never been a fan of any artistes but I truly felt Dayo and Francis acting is a class above if one really wants to compare. The netizen commented quite well that he got his most popular is already good enough cos his Jayden Koo character don’t know why it somehow drives tons of female fans crazy and he did not get the TV King cos he was not good in his acting. However, I felt the phrasing is kind of crude.
Anyway, Ruco’s BK acting is also better than him not sure where he got the idea that he deserves to win. Among the 5 finalist I could only agree to that his acting is better than Kenneth. It should be all about acting skill not how likable how one looks and how popular one is, if one are talking about “Best” Actor.
Getting best actor not 100% depend on acting skill. If you are smart enough ,you should be able to know it by nature. Its important for people to like you as well because its still a voting process. Ruco is lacking of this. His whole package and look, not likeable at all compare with others. This things are fixed and cannot change. Just can blame he has poor fate in life. You need to be likeable if you want to win best actor. Unless really superb strong like Chai Gau wayne lai, then different story, but ruco still not yet that level. But ruco just wont have that fate. At least in the next 5 years also he wont be winning any awards. Sad for him. This is fate just accept it. Unless for best actress really full of possibility. But for male really sorry.
I agreed that Best Actor/Actresses needed to be likable as well for TVB award which I felt it is not too right and fair. If one is talking about “best” then we are talking about pure acting skill unlike most popular or my favourite. I’m only interested in their acting cos if one is to talking about “best”. But this year TVB improved and have the highest fair game of all time.
I agree with you…I used to really like ChiLam because he is very handsome…acting is above average…win the award or not does not matter…but after his speech (which he said it was just a joke)…well it is not funny la…I don’t like him any more! Compare to Francis…for make Francis is a great actor…he was not act like that even he did not win anything! A great actor is a great actor with or without award!

I’m not his fan at all and don’t find him to be funny compared to other comfeians out there. However, I really did hope Rucco would win! That was such a great performance in brothers keeper. What a great drama even the young man that acted as Rucco did a great job in acting. I like Dayo Wong and I love his acting, but it’s funny how he got the BA award when his show hasn’t even finished? I’m sure he and all the artists thought so too, which is why when the candidates were choosing who they think will win, Francis chose Dayo…”for humor sake” as he puts it.
Personally, I think Francis Ng deserved it, but didn’t get it because TVB is afraid of what he will say during his speech, as he can be quite unpredictable and outspoken. 🙂
As for Chilam’s speech, I didn’t think it was that bad. People are really blowing it out of proportion. If anything, I think he was speaking for Francis!

agree…i used to like him because he is handsome…now…not any more or not as much because of his speech…it is not funny…and not appreciation to audience vote and TVB (yes he can say that he help TVB because TVB is lack of good actor now…but after his drama in TVB, he gain a lot of extra job/money–he has said that in other function before)…why can him show some EQ!
