Dayo Wong and Kristal Tin Win TV King and TV Queen at 2013 TVB Anniversary Awards

TVB delivered surprising, but satisfying results at this year’s Anniversary Awards, which concluded on December 16. Dayo Wong (黃子華) and Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) were named TV King and TV Queen, beating hot favorites Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣).

In past years, the Hong Kong media often correctly leaked the list of winners prior to the presentation awards. This year, the majority of the winners were “dark horse” candidates since they were not highly publicized nominees.

2013 TVB Anniversary Awards Kristal Tin 3Kristal Tin won Best Actress and Most Popular Female Character awards for her performance in Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>. Although Kristal’s acting is highly acclaimed and she already received the Best Actress nod from peers earlier at the TVB Anniversary Gala, the media speculated that TVB would instead recognize Linda Chung, who is more highly promoted. Kristal received 100,614 votes to help her win the Most Popular Female Character award, and she cried emotionally over her double victory. Linda hugged Kristal tightly to congratulate her win.

Absent from the awards ceremony, Dayo was shocked when MC Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲) called to announce his victory. Since this year’s Best Actor and Best Actress awards were chosen based on a combination of votes from the public and a professional panel of judges, Dayo defeated Chilam Cheung, who had already won TV King in Malaysia through audience votes.

Receiving 77,948 votes for the Most Popular Male Character Award, Chilam appeared disappointed that the Best Actor award eluded his grasp. In his acceptance speech, Chilam said, “Does TVB not like me? Is it only possible to win the award through popular votes? Biological children are lovable, but when appearing at the necessary and right time, loyal children are very important too!”

2013 TVB Anniversary Awards Eliza Sam Vincent WongPutting in memorable performances since she joined TVB in 2010, Elena Kong (江美儀) won Best Supporting Actress and hugged Triumph in the Skies 2 co-star, Kenneth Ma, excitedly. Seasoned comedian, Benz Hui (許紹雄), turned out to be this year’s dark horse winner for Best Supporting Actor.

Although still struggling to perfect her Cantonese, Eliza Sam’s (岑麗香) raw talent and charisma helped her snag the Most Improved Actress award over leading competitor Priscilla Wong (黃翠如). Working his way up from minor roles to greater prominence, Vincent Wong (王浩信) demonstrated his versatility this year and won the Most Improved Actor award. In his acceptance speech, Vincent thanked his wife, Yoyo Chen (陳自瑤), and former co-stars Damian Lau (劉松仁) and Susan Tse (謝雪心) for mentoring him.

  1. When the nominees’ names was narrow down to Francis, Chilam, Dayo, Ruco and Kenneth Ma. I was thinking omg..Ruco and Kenneth are fighting with those legendary and king of actors ….how can these two green actors will win unless tvb favor them but surprisingly tvb really do a professional job.

    1. I agree tvb did a good job this year. I don’t have complaints about the winners and I’m soo happy for Elena and Kristal! They totally deserve it as to the rest of the people. Bit iffy about Eliza though she started off at a higher acting level compared to other newbies esp in the drama with chin kar lok but I didn’t see a huge improvement from there. It’s like Myolie with golden faith. But don’t get me wrong I like both of them!! I’m just indifferent about Eliaz getting the award of ‘most improved’

      1. I agree. The only person who should not win, in my view, is Eliza.

      2. Yea Eliza Sam’s win is kinda effy but I guess she won by popularity. Could’ve awarded it to someone better.

    2. “Ruco and Kenneth are fighting with those legendary and king of actors”….i think you should remove Chilam’s name from the equation…..he’s neither “legendary” nor “king of actors” even if you have a very fertile imagination.

  2. so happy for best supporting actor and actress Benz Hui and Elena Kong. Elena speech was so natural and touching when she try to get two tickets for her parent but in vain

    1. And Kristal who didn’t know she can get tickets for her parents. Yup, Elena deserves the award very much.

    2. Yup I was so rooting for Kristal, Elena, and Ruco for awards. Too bad Ruco couldn’t win anything. I hope all 3 can work on a series together, it’d be epic!

    1. In answer to drabrry’s question, the rules are made and enforced by a private-sector agency accountable only to its finders, and come complete with an escape clause. Nevertheless, it might be worth complaining to the CRTC, if only for sport. In answer to Libarbarian, I had an education that came out of British Columbia, especially the part in Ottawa, which wasn’t in British Columbia any more. Lucky she left Kitimat when she was 2, or she would have had an education that came out of B.C. like mine. Finally, to susanonthesoapbox: of COURSE I’m on to something! I am Perfesser Dave, the Answer Guy, after all!

  3. I think best actor was the most shocking. i don’t understand why Dayo should get it. Comedy doesn’t mean best. I cannot believe best supporting went to Benz Hui. I feel so bad for Ruco Chan/ Edwin Siu. Eliza Sam is definitely on her way to stardom BUT I think she doesn’t deserved most improved. She hasn’t even been in the industry for that long.

    1. not about comedy or what. Its about acting skills, Try study deeply dayo acting skills, every words he said, his expression and so on. Compare it with chi lam. Then you will know it. Or maybe you are very biased like chi lam no matter how that type? haha. Actually i also a biased person. But i biased on smartphone lar. I only love samsung, no matter how good is HTC or alcatel phone, still i will only buy samsung. hehe

      1. When on earth did I say I wanted Chilam to win? Read before you assume LOL

    2. Comedy doesn’t mean best, but it’s not easy to act comedy and be so popular with the audience. Ruco and Edwin were good, but they still have chances in the future. Dayo deserves recognition, so does Benz Hui.

      1. I never said Benz Hui doesn’t deserve it. When I said I can’ believe it, I just didn’t expect TVB to reward their veterans judging how their systems work. Also, I think it was unfair for DAYO to win because his drama didn’t even finish airing.

      2. Well Dayo was robbed of the Best Actor award twice for War of Genders and To Catch The Uncatchable that had high ratings. So I guess it’s fair this time especially with such a close battle, he won the Professional Judge panel votes after all!

    3. Can’t believe you feel sorry for Ruco/Edwin because Benz Hui won!

      1. They aren’t even in the same category.. what are you talking about. I expressed my sympathy for two actors who lost to Dayo Wong. And when I said I cannot believe it, it doesn’t mean that BENZ HUI is undeserving. I just thought TVB wouldn’t even care about their veterans. A LOT OF PEOPLE here should read carefully before they try to rebuttal my statements LOL

    4. Dayo’s character Hong Kong Nam was imperfect in a perfect way. Everytime after watching an episode, I can still remember him! That’s how deep impression his acting does to our brain.

      1. Honestly if Dayo was nominated for any OTHER year he performed then i would agree. But this drama has to be one of his lesser stellar works. I’ve seen his other comedies. This one was nowhere as good.

      2. I agree the script of Bounty Lady by far one of his worst series. If it weren’t for Dayo and Sai Sai Lup (supporting actress), it would’ve been quite boring. There are so many dumb plotlines in there that aren’t even funny.

    5. Actually, comedy is an underrated acting skill because most people seem to judge good acting by how well they cry. I think it’s harder to make people laugh.

  4. Is Vincent wearing an (ugly) ear cuff or does he have a conch piercing? I love conch piercings!

  5. finally agreed to the winners…after so many years!
best actor/actress was definitely a shocker! but a good shocker!
    legit actors/actress wins! yes!

  6. The most undeserving winner is for the Best Host! Dodo Cheng and Amigo did very well for VOS.. they did a live broadcast..

The other results are deserving except maybe Grace Wong should get Most Improved Actress instead of Eliza Sam. Anyways, lots of happier people today!

    1. i was also rooting for dodo and amigo for VOS hosts! they really created a great show and knew how to host!

Lilian

  7. Finally,Elena Kong won the award she deserves. So happy for her. Her tears was so heart felt and she looked so pretty. Well done,Benz…though I didn’t expect it. I was so glad that Linda did nit get it…it is not her year. Wow..,tvb aren’t biased.

    1. More like TVB has a much fairer tv award system now that includes both Professional Judging and Public Voting (past 2 years).

  8. i’m satisfied with all of the awards except for dayo….so random…i think there are other actors that are more deserving of it….

  9. The majority of Dayo’s votes were from the TVB judges. He was only in the 3rd place of the audience’s voting. Add them together, he had the highest score.

If this was 100% public voting, he would not win the BA.

    Anyway, Congratulation Dayo.

  10. I’m happy with majority of the results, but I seriously thought that VOS would win some kind of award 😐

  11. Wow! Can’t believe Dayo Wong & Krystal Tin win for TV King & Queen. But I think it’s fair for two of them get what they deserve. I’m also happy for Chilam Cheung to win Most Popular Male Character and his show win Best Drama.

  12. I think this year’s results are deserving to those got it. Congratulations to all winners 🙂

  13. Watched live last night! Really happy with the result ! Congratz all winners! Especially Eliza yah!

  14. Haven’t really watched much of Eliza so I can’t really judge her, but I really like Grace in My Bounty Lady!

    1. Then I suggest not watching her dramas. If you do, you’ll just realise that she’s just someone with no acting talent who is still being promoted by TBB

  15. Don’t think any of the biological can complain since they lost to veterans. Congrats to all the winners! Very deserving!

    1. Yes, finally a year that’s satisfying. I have no complaints about this list – maybe it is a little early for Eliza but I do find her quite natural.

  16. Glad that TVB did a good job this year with the awards, no rigging or playing favors! As we can see from the comments, most people are satisfied with the results. Hope TVB could continue their fairness in the coming years.

Very surprising but deserving results! So glad that the results are closer to my preference rather than my predictions. Congrats to Benz Hui and all the other veterans.

Happy for Kristal for her double win. She stood out the best this year, and her character is also very likable. Brother’s Keeper and Bounty Lady are my favorite series this year though. Best Host should be Dodo and Amigo.

As for Best Actor, even though I like Dayo, I’d rather pick Francis and have Dayo win Favorite Character because his character in bounty Lady is likable. I think Francis’ acting skills was more impressive (the emotional scenes in TITS2). Agree that Chilam’s Captain Cool character is overrated. Very ungrateful speech he gave at the awards. His character is nothing special, just an arrogant playboy. My impression of him got worse after I found out he rejected a photo with my aunt this year in November when he had a concert here in Toronto. After seeing his reaction and speech, I’m even less fond of him now.

    1. I agree. Captain Cool’s overrated, and so was his arrogance (in character, at least).

  17. Very happy at the results, especially for Kristal Tin who got both Best Actress and Most Favourite Female Actress. Unbelievable!

TVB seemed to have the best fair results since 2010.

Congratulations to all the winners, especially Kristal Tin, Chilam Cheung, Elena Kong, Vincent Wong. They are the best deserving ones to me.

    1. Wow, Kristal Tin beat all current top TVB fadans. Hurray!

No more idols, but good artistes who can really act! Good sign for TVB!

      1. TVB seemed to have the best fair results since 2009 (Wayne, Sheren, Pierre & Susan) won fair and sqaure

  18. I think TVB gave the Best Actor award to Dayo Wong because:

    1) He is a good actor (but not my choice though)

    2) He was willing to help TVB raise higher viewership ratings by filming a comedic drama series after so many years, and “Bounty Lady” did generate good viewership ratings.

Personally I think Edwin Siu should deserve Best Supporting Actor more than Benz Hui.

    1. Also Grace Wong deserved “Most Improved Actress” more than Eliza Sam, but I know TVB would give it to Eliza due to her popularity.

      1. Benz Hui is no doubt a very good actor, but I don’t think it was hard to act his character in “Bounty Lady”. It is all exaggeration!

  19. The awards are quite satisfying, except for most improved female which should have gone to Grace Wong instead of Eliza Sum. Grace really stepped it up this year and showed her versatility. Eliza always acts the same way, but not surprised she got the award as she the next in line to be over-promoted by TVB as a fadan (after Fala and Aimee Chan), even if her acts skills are not quite there yet.

Anyway, congrats to Dayo, Kristal, Elena, Benz and Vincent! Well deserved!

  20. This year’s results are the best ones we ever had since after “No Regrets”. Very happy for the winners …………. as they deserved them.

      1. Agree. I think there will be minimum number of complaints this year after the awards ceremony.

  21. Wow I’m actually really surprised with this years results. I actually didnt think any of those people would win maybe expect for Eliza.

  22. Congratulations to all the winners who, I think, deservedly won what they received. It was so good to see the reactions of the unexpected winners, Kristal and Dayo, though I found Kristal a little too emotional. Looks like most viewers are satisfied with the results. I have learned from watching these awards that one has really got to watch what one says. Chilam apparently said thw wrong thing and got clobbered. Myolie was also criticized for her acceptance speech when she received her most favorite actor’s award.

  23. I’m glad Dayo won. He was very surprised and awkward that Dodo called. But it was cute moment.

The second deserving best actor I would pick Francis.

    1. Agree. My first pick was Francis Ng, really hoped that he could have took the TV King award. Dayo was a great choice as well.

      1. Agreed. I thought he would’ve won out of the top 5. Nonetheless I’m happy about the results as well. Congrats Dayo.

  24. Surprisingly none of the top siu sangs or fadans won any awards this year. It is about time to get fairness from TVB! Good sign, TVB, keep it up ……… the fairness!

    1. Well, I would consider Kristal as one of their top fadans especially now that Fala has left and the number of leading actors at TVB greatly outnumber the number of actresses. They’ve been putting her in the front row of a lot of their events (even before Brother’s Keeper aired) and it seems like it’s her, the other 4, Niki and Charmaine as their top fadans now.

      1. I really liked Kristal Tin’s acting in “Bother’s Keeper”, but I doubt that TVB would give Best Actress award to her as she only moved up to take 1st lead roles 1 or 2 years ago, and she did not seem to be highly promoted by TVB yet. Anyway, I am so happy for her …………. especially winning double awards this year.

      2. Lisa, What an amazing story! A gem. But I feel as tuhogh you buried the lead, that being that you are THE Lisa in the Corduroy books!First of all I had no idea that Corduroy book came out in 1968! I was already 13 then, but I feel like I grew up with that book. It is one of my favorites, and I read it so many times to my children. It is such a comforting, wonderful book and what an honor for you to have inspired it. And back then with so many children’s books featuring white children, I loved that Lisa was black. Another great book was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. But, for the most part, seeing children of color then was rare. Now, you’re making me think I should read the Hunger Games. I haven’t seen the films yet, but am certainly curious. So glad I stopped by today!

  25. Congrats to all the winners! I’m very happy that TVB play fair this year, giving out to most deserving artists.

    1. I love the Best Supporting awards: Benz and Elena. They Truely performed well on their role! Congrats
    2. Best actress: Kristin was shocked when she won the award! She cried throughout her acceptance speech. She gave a solid performance on her role.
    3. Best actor: congrats to Dayo. He’s a good actor, no doubt about it but I still think Francis role were harder to portray.
    4. Outstanding awards: this is my most fav award part because this is the only time veterans get to receive recognition for all the hard work they put in throughout the year. They don’t get high paid salary but they’re willing to stick with TVB during rough time, showing their loyalty. I hope to see more awards passing out to other veterans next yr.
    5. Most improved actor: congrats to Vincent, he totally deserves this award bcuz I see his acting skills improved a lot through these past 2 yrs.

I’m very happy to hear Tavia filming a mainland drama next yr that way it allows her to get expose to a different working environment and enhance her acting skill!

    1. I hope Lau Dan, Elliot, Joe Junior, Gigi, Ram, and the two owners of the law firm in Come Home Love will win something next year. They totally deserve recognition.

      1. Yeah I hope so too. All veterans should deserve awards and recognition!

      2. Also KK Cheung. He look good for his age.

They should have a best mother and best father awards. Veteran’s should get a thank you gift each year and have reasonable work hours for them.

      3. I agree! I think you are talking about Geoffrey Wong (former ATV actor) and Eileen Yeow as the owners of the law firm. I really hope to see the cast of Come Home Love in more dramas in the future.

  26. This is one year where I think most people are happy with the result. I also think there were some very worthy awards given. Congrats to all the award winners!

    1. people were happy with the results in 2009 & 2010. And I definitely think those years were fair

  27. Does anyone happen to have the link for the anniversary awards? Thanks 😀

  28. Yayyyyyyyy goodbye to bad speculations n TVBs bashing:p n Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy to krystal Tin for grabbing a double award n congratulations to all winners!!!!!!!!

Kinda disappointed with d setup though u know super moderate for such a bigggggggggg occassion mann!!!!!!!!

  29. Well deserved winners this year. I was rooting for Elena kong. She never fails to disappoint. Vincent Wong also deserved most improving award, I do see his improvements these couple of years. As for Eliza…………………..I don’t see the improvement. She needs to improve on speaking cantonese and acting before she takes on so many roles. Unbelieveable. Tvb is not giving the talented artists enough opportunities.

    1. ” She needs to improve on speaking cantonese”

She has actually improved a lot in speaking Cantonese. I was quite impressed with that.

      1. not really, she still have an accent which people can’t understand

      2. And she can’t speak fluently at all. If you watch her shows, you realise that she stumbles a lot when speaking, and they still use those scenes. I have a feeling that the director gave up on her having fluent speech, so they just used the best scenes that they could find out of all they filmed.

  30. Congratz to all winners! So far this is the best Tvb Awards in so many years..I was so happy that Dayo won the best actor award. He deserve it.

    1. I think the best TVB Award was 2009 & 2010. I was so happy that Wayne & Sheren took TV KING/QUEEN Award. Best years ever

  31. Genuinely surprised at Dayo’s win. Not saying that he’s not a good actor, in fact he’s pretty legendary. But in comparison I thought Chilam did have a better performance. Glad that Kristal Tin won Best Actress because she TRULY deserve it! Congratulations to Eliza Sam and Vincent Wong as well as the other winners!

  32. It’s so perfect that Dodo informed Dayo of his award. Back when she won Best Actress for War of the Genders, she was saying that she was still sad because Dayo didn’t win Best Actor for it.

  33. I don’t think so we would describe the character “Captain Cool” overrated, rather it is the overwhelming response from viewers.

  34. I’m mainly happy with all the results. I agree with most of their choices from the past few years. I wish that Grace had won Most Improved but I prefer Eliza winning to Priscilla, but of course that’s only because they gave her the best host award. I’d rather have any of the other nominees win.

  35. Quite satisfied with this year’s results. I’d predicted TVB would play favourites and give Best Actress to Linda, but I’m very happy for Kristal – she truly did an amazing job in Brother’s Keeper.

  36. It’s funny that if someone they like wins, then it is “fair” but if they personally don’t like who won (regardless if the majority of people voted for them), then it must have been “rigged”.

  37. About time the winners aren’t the one highly promoted by TVB … some of them can barely act.

  38. Through Chilam’s speech you can really understand why he isn’t a fit for the TV King award. He’s not a humble actor. TV King is just a title and getting an award or not does not dictate how skillful the actor is. Instead, a real TV King is forward-looking and always thinks about how he can improve and do more to keep the audience entertained. Dayo embodies this definition of a ‘TV King’ incredibly well and that is why I truly believe he deserves this title.

  39. Dayo was so cute and natural when Dodo called and he was so blur and said what award and I was laughing then, but Dayo can improvised very fast by answering Dodo with his natural improvised skill. Dayo is a real legendary and a Diva. Even Francis voted him. A good actor must have a natural improvising skill. I find Chilam still lack of this natural improvising skill look at the way he speaks when gets the award still lack of the natural charm.
