Elaine Yiu is Grateful for Nancy Wu’s Friendship

When all love seemed hopeless, the love of someone else breathed new life into her.

Elaine Yiu (姚子羚) is not what she seems. Though she is known for having a gentle demeanor, the 38-year-old actually has boyish qualities to her. Like a typical frat boy, Elaine can be quite obscene, likes to joke around, and is very straightforward.

“Those who know me likes to call me a boy,” she said with a laugh. “I know a lot of people don’t believe that, but honestly, I don’t mind it. I don’t mind showing that side of me to others. Why should I pretend to be somebody that I’m not?”

In May, tabloids broke the news that Elaine was dating a nightclub owner known as Raymond. The report was written in a way where it was made to look like Elaine was the third party. It pushed Elaine, who had always been very private about her love life, to release a statement to clarify.

“I was definitely unhappy about it,” she said. “But I can’t control what others say. I can only control myself. I already explained whatever that needed explaining. As for the other things, I have my reasons to stay quiet. I will not choose avoidance. Those who know Elaine Yiu know what kind of person she is. That’s why there really isn’t a need to say anything at all. The more I talk about it, the more stories will be written up.”

It was during those hard times when Elaine realizes that she is actually a very lucky woman, and if she had to choose between romance and friendship, Elaine would undoubtedly choose friendship.

Elaine and her Justice Bao: The First Year <包青天再起風雲> costar Nancy Wu (胡定欣) are famous for being close friends. Them, along with “Nonsense Club” members Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Paisley Wu (胡蓓蔚), Selena Lee (李施嬅), and Mandy Wong (黃智雯), are all close with each other. During the two months Elaine had spent with Nancy while shooting for Justice Bao, Elaine realized a new appreciation for her friendship with Nancy. It was precisely because of Nancy that Elaine had made it happily through the year.

“We understand each other a lot,” said Elaine. “That’s why we never fight. When we’re off work, we would always hang out together—go watch a movie, find a place to sight see, cook soup together.”

Having to spend two whole months in Hengdian World Studios was not easy, especially since Elaine had piles upon piles of obligations to fulfill back in Hong Kong. But thanks to Nancy, Elaine’s two months in Hengdian went by smoothly and happily.

One of Elaine’s most memorable scenes in Justice Bao was a fight scene with Nancy, their very first one together. “I love working with Nancy because she enables me to get more in character. There was a scene where I say to her that I’ve never been more happy after meeting her. That scene reflected our real relationship, and the tears just couldn’t stop flowing out of our eyes.”

Elaine and Nancy became friends after collaborating in 2005’s Revolving Doors of Vengeance <酒店風雲>. Their friendship club, which the media dubbed as the “Nonsense Club,” wasn’t formed right away—it took many years for the girls to come together. True friendship requires commitment and trust. The girls promised each other that they will not hide their flaws and work on improving them together.

“You can have more than one best friend,” said Elaine.
