Fala Chen Angers TVB With Plans of Studying in USA

Fala Chen’s (陳法拉) TVB management contract expiration this May is lurking close. Last year, in order to persuade the fadan to stay at the company, TVB tried their very best to meet all her proposed requirements. Fala reportedly demanded a salary raise, to take part only in grand productions, and that the company must accommodate her schedule so she can film in mainland China.

TVB thus quickly provided Fala with the opportunity to star alongside veteran actors Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) and Chilam Cheung (張智霖) in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵II>. Fala was initially supposed to portray a flight attendant, but TVB was afraid that the role would not bring her much attention and asked Fala to become a pilot instead. To please Fala, TVB issued their scriptwriters to change the script immediately.

Furthermore, Fala was cast as the female lead in Will Power <傳愛事務所>, starring alongside TV Kings, Moses Chan (陳豪) and Wayne Lai (黎耀祥).

But no matter how hard TVB tried to get Fala to renew her contract, she had no plans to stay. An insider from the company revealed, “It’s already been predicted that she would ask for a raise in salary if she were to renew her contract. However, she won’t sign with TVB for five years no matter what. She even demanded that TVB collaborate with Neway, the company of her rumored husband, Daniel Sit (薛世恒). TVB did not refuse, and told her that everything has room for discussion.”

Earlier, Fala suddenly proposed her plan of heading to New York to take part in an acting course. Hearing the news, TVB was enraged and stopped arranging new dramas for Fala, and even turned down all her commercial activities.

With nothing to do at the moment, Fala enjoyed her time with friends. Last Friday, she was seen eating dinner with Sherry Chen (陳爽) in Happy Valley. Despite being coldly treated by TVB, Fala’s mood seems to be unaffected. Devoid of makeup, she smiled and allowed approaching reporters to take as many photos as they wished.

  1. i like her…without TVB’s support and promote, it is no way to be TVB queen! well, maybe she has plan for herself!

    1. Whats tvb queen when one is beauty queen

    1. The reporter’s invisible friend that can be conjured up at the reporter’s convenience.

      Blah, blah, another read-and-discard report.

  2. Girl got sass! Me like. She really does remind me of Michelle Ye. Ye did the same. Saw no future, put a hand in TVB’s faces and gestured, ‘Well this world is big, I’ll find my place elsewhere.’

    1. I personally like Ye’s acting over Fala. But i don’t see anything wrong studying in USA and taking breaks from summer:/

      1. I don’t see anything wrong either if she is going to take a short acting course in the States. In fact, it is a good way for her to learn more about acting so that her acting skills will be upgraded.

      2. In terms of acting, I think both are pretty much at the same level when they were at TVB. However, I think Michelle has an edge, just a bit, since I absolutely loved her portrayal of her character in Central Affairs II.

Regardless, both are beauties and intelligent.

      3. Michelle might be better now, but while she was still in TVB I don’t think her acting was better than Fala’s current level.

      4. Agree, Michelle’s acting back in TVB days was slightly better than Fala’s plus her cantonese was much better as well. But both are bold girls who are willing to get out of TVB and venture off in the big world.

Also to emphasise how similar Fala and Michelle are, they both have a dimple! both born in china then moved to US, both represented New York in MCI and both are fluent in mandarin and english.

    2. well for one she has a rich husband and her mandarin is fluent ,so she can easily find work in mainland China if she wants to. Second , she is good looking, and producers are bound to pick her for work. Why be stuck in TVB and limit herself??

      1. I know right. And Fala still looks so gorgeous even without any makeup on, like in the photo above! :O

    3. I love Michelle Ye’s bold move. Even though her acting is better than Fala, her cards weren’t nearly as nice as Fala. Fala’s got a boyfriend/husband that she can turn to while Michelle truly made a risky albeit smart move.

I don’t get TVB. They care nothing about the employee’s career or future. As soon as someone do something else, they immediately cut them off! WTEFF is their problem? Fala is trying to improve her skill set and freezes her.

Way to go TVB, i hope your corporation fails!!!!!

      1. Wow, pandamao. Was that really needed?
I think TVB values loyalty a lot.

      2. @Coco .. you are mixing up loyalty with obedience.

A corporation’s biggest asset is its people.

      3. I think a corporation’s biggest assets (in the case of TVB) is people and then, the second most important is the quality of its products the corporation produces.

      4. @Coco – requiring versus forcing are two different things.

TVB can get loyalty by treating ALL its employees better. Kuddos to you for supporting TVB though.

      5. Nowhere did I say I was a supporter of TVB.
Requiring/forcing = same thing to TVB.

      6. And also, it is impossible to treat everyone at TVB equal. Imagine how many dramas do they have to create. @.@

  3. Fala should study in America! Don’t let tvb hold her down. She has great ambitions for acting so I’m sure it’s not like she’s gonna quit acting on tvb.

  4. Seems like a good move for her. I remember she said she had ambitions about being in film and it looks like she’s working towards that. The younger front-line TVB actors and actresses are smarter these days…nobody wants to fall into a rut. If you wanna get to that next level, you have to try things outside of your comfort zone.

    1. Or go outside of tvb is more like it nowadays lol

  5. If it’s true, tvb management need to realise that their artists’ are not their cows or slaves that they continouously milk and churn money from. They have their own desires, goals and ambitions-if Fala feels like studying abroad will assist her in her acting or broadening her perspective of how her future career may go, then I don’t see why the hell tvb should stop her or even be angry. Once their contract ends, they have a right to decide…if tvb is so scared of losing their artists’ or losing that money making opportunity if they think twice about recontracting again, then treat the artists’ better, respect their decision, create a better working environment/working hrs, and improve on writing up better scripts. Maybe that way artists’ will feel like there is a worth in staying-even so, going away so STUDY isn’t a bad thing as a way to improve and become more refreshed.

    1. that’s right, don’t fancy the way tvb treat their actors, the management only thinks about money and nothing else, no ‘friendship’, too many ‘crazies’ working in tvb management, am really glad fala’s off to study, good riddens

  6. This is why TVB artistes aren’t loyal to the company. TVB is super sweet when you’re popular + contracted, but changes 180 degree against you if you decide other options.

    1. Shame on TVB. Usually all new artistes are contracted for over 8 years. If an actress does not become popular within 8 years, she will be too old to try outside.

      1. Well not just tvb,I think it’s the whole entertainment industry- it’s part of the game. That’s why being an artist can be so risky, when your 15 minutes of fame is up, you could be well and truly b forgotten overnight. They really need the foundation of good acting chops and skills to keep the viewers hyped and number of fans rising imo.

  7. i honestly feel like fala is a bit snobby, never liked her…now probably never will.

  8. Well you can’t blame TVB for not promoting artists that aren’t willing to stay in the company. If they continue to promote Fala who’s planning to leave over someone like Nancy (or whoever), then it’s not fair to people like Nancy. You can’t possibly promote every single artist at the same time, there’s only a limited amount of resources.

On a side note, my gut is telling me that Fala isn’t going to the States for an acting class. But I don’t doubt she wants to leave TVB. Hey, if her chances are better outside of TVB then by all means and leave. I would like to see if a better script would improve her acting chops.

    1. It makes total sense to promote your exclusive artistes and gives them priority. That doesn’t mean you can’t respect other artistes and the rest of the contract. It’s their credibility.

If I’m TVB artist, my thinking is… 1) They definitely don’t offer the best salary. 2) Their work schedule is not ideal. 3) If I’m Nancy, this is really unfair, why am I still with TVB? If I’m Fala, so they’ll treat me like goddess when I’m popular + signed and garbage just because I’m longer signed? — Why would I bother staying here? Oh, ’cause I’m not popular yet.

If TVB is smart and want to keep their artistes for a long time, they need to show a much better customer service skill toward artistes than this. They need to be classier.

I know some Korean artistes like Kim Ha Neul who changes management every 2 years. So what, they’re not going to find jobs for her within the 2 years?

TVB doesn’t need Fala or any particular artistes to stay alive. Although their rating might drops, they’re too big to fail. They just need to work on their culture and climate, make good artistes want to work for them in the long run.

      1. I’m not sure how not offering them jobs to be disrespectful. That’s exactly the point I made about promoting their own before those that plans to leave. In business there’s a saying “it’s not personal, it’s business”.

Fact is, nobody would stay for the long run with TVB because they can’t possibly afford to pay their artists like they do in China. So even if treat their artists like queens and kings, they would leave.

Well I wouldn’t compare how the Korean industry works compared to TVB. TVB is a monopoly in the HK TV industry. Are those companies that signed Kim Ha Neul a monopoly?

I’m not sure whether TVB is smart or not, but I do know they make Billions a year in profit. As far as TVB is concerned, making money is all that matters. Having class or morals doesn’t feed or help promote these artists, making a profit does.

      2. They discontinued her work (besides finishing up her drama) before her contract officially ended before May. Her contract might not even ends on May 1st exactly. Of course, TVB doesn’t need to be responsible for her afterward. On the side note, since when did TVB is known for respecting their artistes or non-artistes anyway to even bother mention of offering/not offering job.

No, that’s not really a fact that nobody is going to stay with TVB in the long run. It’s a logical assumption, sure. When you’re looking for a job, there are a lot to consider – salary, benefits, culture & climate, growth, location, schedule, etc. Unfortunately, TVB gives none as of the moment. HK artistes can see mainland as new opportunity, TVB can also do so. They can give their artistes more now they have more… if they choose to do so to keep their artistes.

The reason why I mentioned TVB is too big to fail and they don’t need anyone really, because they monopolize HK broadcasting industry. However, I dislike using the term monopoly as HK artistes now have more options beyond HK. Monopoly only means so much to the newbie/non/less popular artistes.

All business cares about profit not just TVB. They certainly don’t need to be an ass. The entertainment is changing, HK is no longer the center as it once has been. TVB, you and I really don’t know what’s next. TVB can keep being an ass with the mindset I’m monopolizing the HK industry, what you gonna do about it. Or, trying to stay on top of this changes to possibly make more profits.

      3. So therefore I don’t see how it’s disrespecting to stop her jobs when her contracting is ending. Like I said, there’s other artists that TVB could be promoting over someone like Fala who is leaving. Why would any company spend their resources on someone that is leaving over those that are working hard and looking for a chance to be promoted? You may not like it, but that’s how majority of the companies in this world works.

Like you said, TVB offers none of the benefits you have mentioned. Who would stay with a company that offers none of the above? Therefore, I stand by my point that no artist would want to stay with TVB for the long run. At the end of the day, it all boils down to money. Why do you think so many second, third or even fourth line artists flocked over to HKTV? Because they offer better pay – of course they say HKTV treats them better. But how in the world would they know a new company would treat them better? $$$ talks.

You can dislike them for being a monopoly, but that’s the cold hard truth. Yes, they can be an @$$ about it, as long as they
continue to make a profit. You don’t seem to understand how important it is for a company to be profitable. How do you expect TVB to continue to promote their artists? All newbies needs promotions to be famous and well known. Fala was no different, she was promoted with TVB’s resources.

TVB has changed over the years, for better or worst. As for the good, over the years TVB has effectively collaborated with Mainland China’s networks and build connections for their artists to expand in China. For the worst, they are lacking in creativity and actual talent.

The new entertainment leader will be mainland China within the next decade or two. The market is just way too profitable to be missed and TVB is jumping onto that money making wagon. It’s no coincidence that Hollywood is collaborating with Mainland over other market choices.

  9. Fala probably will not renew her contract. It’s apparent that she wants to venture out. She’s not going to sit back and wait for TVB to arrange Mainland series for her. Well…it doesn’t matter because TVB will act in favor of them. Right now, she’s gonna get the cut unless she renews.

  10. Seems like the strong type who knows what she wants and is no longer interested in “paying dues” – keep strong 🙂

  11. If the viewers stop watching TVB’s crap, maybe they’ll do something about the way they do business.

  12. Fala said: “It is necessary for an artist to increase his/her value too” regarding taking the acting class in NY. And I absolutely agree. Actors should try different things to increase their own value and experiences because that actually helps them develop their acting.

IF TVB has frozen her for this decision… their loss. As they take a cut from her commercial events.

  13. I honestly will really miss Fala in TVB dramas if she does decide to leave :/

  14. Never cared for Fala. The report is so stupid. What do you expect TVB to do? She’s leaving for America, not like she has any time to film if TVB offered her anything.

  15. Well, everyone has to leave TVB one day so it is not like they have to stay for life. Some that have no where to go may stick with TVB no matter what because they have no other options. However,if you have other options, who would want to stick with a cheap company like TVB who pays poorly and works you to death??? Only the ones that are new and aren’t famous yet would endure it, but otherwise… NO WAY!!!

Fala isn’t that great but since TVB is lacking so many artists, they are trying to please and keep as many as possible. However, I still wonder how they can be sos stupid and mistreat the veterans like Eddie Cheung and Felix Wong who agreed to film for them and get treated so badly?? I really wonder if TVB has any common sense????

  16. While she’s in New York, she should buy another house.

    1. thewong,
You must be in real estate promoting property ownership. 🙂

I have a feeling Fala will be studying at New York University. If any NYU students see Fala, please share your star spotting!

  17. Well it’s obvious she wants to “venture” out to become a tai tai-a la gigi lai. after all, she is like, second in line or whatever to the newway throne.

  18. The TVB Queen/King Award has lost a lot of value in the past several years. Fala is smart to leave.

I’m a huge Wayne fan and I keep wishing he would take his fame and LEAVE (like Charmaine and Kevin)! He can do so much better elsewhere instead of staying at TVB to film cruddy dramas.

    1. I agree with you- Wayne’s skills definitely has the capacity to be larger and better else where. His acting is brilliant in which he truly does bring his characters to life, but often the drama’s script just weighs everything down …… he really should adventure out and discover better scripts and roles.

  19. if she plans to leave, why would tvb want to promote her? Its all just business, nothing personal.

  20. it seems more like punishment/vengefulness to not use talent you value rather than give her something to do before she leaves that will enhance her appeal BUT will also give you a profitable product. I’m really amazed when ego and power/authority enter into the question on one side of a deal when the older or larger group decides they won’t enrich someone even if it is mutually rewarding. It’s a pity that if you are large enough without competition like Mo Seen, you get away with this bullying for many generations. They have shoot chong so many talented but poor people and they have overworked and ruined the livers (Wong Yut Wah) of so many others who were afraid to be shoot chong like their fellow classmates.

  21. because you don’t really respect and value her – you can’t just nod and say uh, huh, of course someone as lovely and smart as you will definitely benefit from a year in America and that is to be expected – can’t keep a good thing to yourself – but that’s not the scent from Mo Seen – it feels like – you see a good thing – another talented beauty with increasing fan following and talk sweet to her so she can make us lots of money but if she does sign you secretly feel she is a fool as you gloat that she is basically keeping the entire company employed – I really feel that the stars are mistreated at Mo Seen – look at that short guy who wrote the script about Mainlanders and HKers – you can tell right away he is special but he was derided for not having professional credentials by the established scriptwriters – because they feel their rice bowl is threatened.

I think this is a problem with respect for others and a lack of fairness in that everyone deserves to make a living and to get paid what they are worth.

  22. Look TVB, Fala doesn’t need TVB to survive. She’s rich. She doesn’t even need to work. She doesn’t even need to give face to TVB. TVB will have to give face to her.

She’s ambitious. Why settle down in small hk television when she can do so much better??
