Fala Chen: “TVB Salary Increase Won’t Be Much”

Although Fala Chen’s (陳法拉) management contract with TVB is expiring in May, she has not signed a renewal contract with the company yet. Stating that she wished for greater advancement and that “TVB’s pay will not increase much”, it is speculated that Fala will focus on the mainland Chinese market instead.

Reports surfaced yesterday that Fala will be signing a per-series contract with TVB, in which she will film one series per year at a fee of $40,000 HKD per episode. Huayi Brothers was allegedly interested in signing Fala to heavily promote her in the mainland Chinese market. Amidst speculations over her future working arrangements with TVB, Fala revealed she has not made a final decision yet.

“TVB gave me many options. We are still negotiating right now and things are not finalized,” Fala  said. Since Fala has worked at TVB for eight years and has good relationships with management, she will consider TVB’s offer first.

TVB is eager to retain Fala, whom the company has heavily promoted to lead fadan status. Aside from Fala leading in Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II>, it is rumored that Will Power <傳愛事務所> will be a designated Anniversary series to appease Fala and improve her chances of winning the Best Actress award. Fala said, “If [Will Power] is an Anniversary series,  then more viewers will notice the drama. However, I will not entangle my contract negotiations with the awards.”

Remuneration is not the key negotiating factor, as Fala indicated that salary increases at TVB are not too high.

  1. Forget TVB; time to take your shot at the big leagues, Chen.

  2. I don’t think she will sign a longterm contract. She wants more freedom to do other things

    1. I agree with you.
But will she win any awards this year? That would depend.

      1. Since she is not signing, then I doubt it. Only if TITS2 has high ratings or Fala has an outstanding performance, which to be honest, is pretty unlikely if she’s really that burnt out.

  3. Don’t worry Fala, TVB will give some kind an award just to play with you.

  4. yeh don’t think she will sign long term contract. only a per series contract. I think she’s given up on the TV Queen award as well. tvb is cheap, she can earn so much more just by working in the US with her economics degree??? (correct me if im wrong – I THINK she has an economics degree)

    1. and she has a rich boyfriend. why degrade yourself by working for a cheap small hk tv station?

  5. She cannot act. She should go pursue an education. Her acting is so damn annoying.

    1. she has a flat acting and the same expressions. i also recall that she was criticized a lot for her acting in lives of omission.

tvb give her lots of chances but she still too ambitious. remember that she once said she wants to win oscar. good, leave tvb then. you have a safety net – your wealthy and powerful boyfriend too un case the contract with huayi don’t go as well as her dream.

  6. will power is also rumoured to be anniversary series to retain moses and make him tv king. if tvb really will do all these i feel bad for other contender especially ruco and kenneth who should have it this year deservingly but keep getting blocked by tvb politics 🙁

  7. I like Fala but she seems pretty plain as an actress. I don’t really feel much about her, especially when she leads. Her acting is unoffensive, but not inspiring. Then again, haven’t seen her since the drama with Roger Kwok.

  8. Fala may get some work in China but like many viewers have stated, her acting is 2nd rate like a supporting actress but not the main. She does not have the spunk to carry the main lead. Thus, she will flame out in China and spend the rest of her time with her hubby and out of the entertainment scene.

    1. its a good thing she got a rich hubby, don’t need to worry much financially, hope they spend some time at old folks and orphanages, or even visit yammi lam

      1. Just because she has a rich husband does not mean that she is set for life since who knows what the future holds?? They can break up or divorce one day, who knows?? Also, just because you marry a rich guy does not mean that their money is yours so it is always better to be independent and have your own career and income.

    1. I wonder about that and it shows that you don’t know what the future holds so it is always better to be financially independent…

  9. Actually, I really do not think she is award material yet…lead lady, a weak one. But, she is of course much better than some of the so called ‘lead ladies’ TVB are promoting currently. TVB can really just close shop or do their very best to retain and get back those ex fadans.

    1. If Myolie and Tavia could win for their sub par performances, why shouldn’t Fala? But of course, she will not win when she won’t sign a long-term contract.

  10. $5000 USD an episode! ppl in the us dont’ even make 5000 a month! So why is she complaining that not enough? Does she want to be paid like overpaid actors over here? 500k an episode?

    1. TVB is notoriously underpaid the workers. Fala can complain what she wants.

      1. if 5k an episode is underpaid then how much is suffice?

      2. tvb’s episode pay is peanuts. the artistes gain money from product endorsements and outside events. there are rumours that newbie eliza sam earns more from outside events than fala. besides fala’s negative attitude rumours maybe making advertisers don’t like her and prefer clean image artistes such as linda chung and eliza sam. maybe that’s why fala felt she can’t make money anymore in tvb and need to change to mainland market where you can survive just by filming mainland dramas and don’t need to worry about finding endorsement or outside functions money.

  11. Maybe she can make it big in the mainland, because she’s original from there(Sichuan). So she can already speak Mandarin well.

    1. Speaking in Mandarin does not mean if she can act as well. She not at the lead actress quality yet.

      1. Whether or not you are lead actress quality has no bearing on you actually getting lead roles. Bit naive to think the entertainment industry is a fair industry, aren’t you?

      2. The entertainment industry is never fair… look at the green leaf actors left masses from TVB to HKTV.

  12. There are only three real avenues in which you can make money as a Chinese star these days:

    1. Mainland Chinese market
    2. Hong Kong movie market
    3. TVB and get into ads/become spokesperson for some Western/Japanese company.

TXB has always been the platform which provides exposure/screen time/opportunities rather than cold hard cash for HK/Chinese stars. Most graduate to the movie scene (which is now pretty dead) or more recently, get into the mainland market.

Thing is, you see a mass exodus of the likes of Fala Chen, Michael Tse, Bosco Wong, Ron Ng, Yoyo Mung, Alex Fong etc. but they wouldn’t want to burn any bridges and perhaps may be a “out of jail” card one day in future in case their popularity dips at one point.

Interestingly, TXB most likely will not want to be on bad terms with departing stars as well when they hit a low ebb e.g. now.

If they can manage to spruce up a few good scripts, think what they can do with a few stars coming back just for a couple of series. Think Louis Koo, Nick Cheung, Leon Lai, Flora Chan etc if they were interested.

TXB do not want to be like AXV in 10 years time….
