Get Ready for Taiwan’s New Generation of Young Idol-Actors

With China’s ever-expanding film and television industry, many tend to forget what’s going on in the other side of the sea. But Taiwan’s idol factory never stopped producing, and with the hit success of  last year’s Someday or One Day <想見你>, we are reminded that Taiwan’s idol-actors still have a lot to offer. Here are ten of Taiwan’s hottest young actors:

Greg Hsu (許光漢)

The Someday or One Day actor has been acting since he was 13 years old. Now endearingly known as “the nation’s boyfriend,” Greg’s first serious foray into the entertainment industry happened in 2011 when he won an opportunity to star in a music video for Kuo Shu-yao (郭書瑤). He was once part of a boy band project in 2012, but contractual issues led to the project’s cancellation. He officially debuted as an actor in 2013 for the drama Dive into Love <潛入藍中籃>.

Patrick Shih (施柏宇)

The 23-year-old exploded into fame following his lead performance alongside Greg in Someday or One Day last year, though he had already gained a steady fanbase after starring in a supporting role for the 2018 BL drama series HIStory 2: Crossing the Line <越界>. Known for his resemblance of Korean actor Park Seo-joon, Patrick has a bright future ahead.

Kent Tsai (蔡凡熙)

The 22-year-old was one of the lucky few who shot to fame in his debut year. He received Best New Performer nominations for the television-based Golden Bell Awards and the film-based Golden Horse Awards in 2017, each for his debut performances in The Teenage Psychic <通靈少女> and All Because of Love <痴情男子漢>, respectively. At 185 cm tall, Kent has also earned the nickname “the nation’s senior”.

Derek Chang (張軒睿)

The 27-year-old is more than just Selena Jen’s () younger boyfriend. He first started to gain traction in the industry after debuting in the 2016 drama Prince of Wolf <狼王子>, starring alongside Amber An (安心亞).

Simon Lien (連晨翔)

The 28-year-old debuted as a second generation member of the boy band SpeXial in 2014. He left the group in 2017, after three years, due to the end of his contract. After a year of no jobs, he returned in 2018 to star in iQIYI web series Youth <以你為名的青春>. He also made a brief guest appearance for Someday or One Day last year, as the love interest of Greg’s character “Wang Quan-sheng”, and shared a kiss with him.

Dino Lee (李玉璽)

The 26-year-old singer-songwriter is best known for his debut acting performance in the 2015 blockbuster hit Our Times <我的少女時代>, in which he starred alongside Vivian Sung (宋芸樺) and Darren Wang (王大陸). His guest appearance in the 2019 film Fall in Love at First Kiss <一吻定情>, which also starred Darren Wang, further contributed to Dino’s acting success.

Muji Hsu (徐謀俊)

The 26-year-old starred in music videos and commercials before landing his first mainstream acting job for the short film Sweeter Than My Drink <飲料大作戰>. Prior to his debut, Muji acted in small films for his college classmates. He is best known for his supporting appearance in the 2017 drama Intern Doctor <實習醫師鬥格>.

Wu Nien-hsuan (吳念軒)

The 24-year-old started his foray into the entertainment industry after getting casted in a star search project. After two years of training, he debuted as a host for the travel show The Burning Youth Tours <青春好7> in 2016. He shot to fame following his acting debut in the 2017 film The Tag-Along 2 <紅衣小女孩2>.

Jake Hsu (徐鈞浩)

The 29-year-old is best known for his performance in the 2016 TV drama Close Your Eyes Before It’s Dark <天黑請閉眼> and gained international fame following his starring appearance in the 2019 BL series HIStory 3: Trapped <圈套>.

Fandy Fan (范少勳)

Also a HIStory alumnus, the 26-year-old debuted in the industry as a model. Fandy never received formal acting training, but has a natural talent for performing. Among his accolades include the Golden Horse Award for Best New Performer. His claim to fame was the BL series HIStory 2: Crossing the Line, which was nominated for Best Miniseries in 2018.
