Kelly Cheung: How a Change in Name Changed Her Fortune

Kelly Cheung (張曦雯) seems to have it all. From winning the Miss Chinese International Pageant in 2012, to being a host on TVB Pearl, and now a star in drama Life on the Line <跳躍生命線>, the elegant beauty exudes the air of a woman with a charmed life. But according to a source close to 28-year-old actress’ family, this was not always the case, and her success today may be because of her change in name.

As revealed by the source, before Kelly and her family moved to Chicago, her father was a maintenance technician, while her mother worked as a beautician. They lived in public housing in Wong Tai Sin, and were very much a grassroots family with an average income.

As Kelly’s parents were also very traditional and believed in Chinese fortune telling and divination techniques, Kelly’s Chinese name was changed when she was about two years old on the advice of a fortune teller, in order to improve her destiny. As her family’s circumstances then improved afterwards, it is believed that the fortune teller was quite accurate.

As for Kelly herself, after having entered the entertainment industry for six years, TVB senior management is said to be quite optimistic about her potential and have earmarked her for promotion. She has also recently been given increasingly more opportunities. In addition to Life on the Line, Kelly has landed a significant role in upcoming medical drama Big White Duel <白色強人>, as well as being involved in the series The Solutionist <解決師> which started filming recently.

Looks like we will definitely be seeing, hearing, and reading a lot more about her in time to come!
