Kenneth Ma, Jacqueline Wong Share Their Experiences Working On “Deep in the Realm of Conscience”

TVB’s upcoming period drama Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2深宮計> will soon be greeting the world, and the cast and crew are excited to finally see the drama’s debut.

A press conference for the period drama epic was held on Tuesday. The drama’s main cast, including Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎), shared their experiences working on the show, which was shot on location at Hengdian World Studios.

The costars-turned-onscreen-couple made it clear to the press that they did not bring their relationship into their characters, explaining that the characters they play on the show are completely different from their real-life selves. Jacqueline said, “Maybe some people would think that it would be easier for us to get in character, but that’s not necessarily true. We are playing completely different characters from ourselves.”

Nonetheless, the couple said they had a very comfortable working experience with each other. “Everything felt natural, and [Kenneth] is a very professional actor. He helped me get in character,” said Jacqueline.

However, filming for Deep in the Realm of Conscience had not been smooth. There were many sleepless nights, and for Jacqueline, the number of emotional scenes she had to do definitely took a toll on her own health.“I fell sick at one point, and I wouldn’t stop coughing for two weeks straight. It’s to the point where I would wake myself up at night from coughing. My coworkers were all very caring and prepared a lot of medicine for me. I felt so loved. I’m touched.”

On Kenneth’s hardest scene, he said, “I had a scene that was shot in the woods. It was raining very hard that day and I was literally covered in mud.”

Deep in the Realm of Conscience is the official sister production of Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計>, which broke TV ratings when it aired in Hong Kong in 2009. Deep also stars Steven Ma (馬浚偉), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Annie Liu (劉心悠), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Alice Chan (陳煒), and Chrissy Chau (周秀娜). It premieres May 21, 2018.
