Kevin Cheng Will Not Film for TVB in 2013

After claiming the TVB Best Actor Award two times and starring in Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步驚心>, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) has become highly successful in the Greater China region. During the 20 years he spent within the entertainment industry, Kevin had times when he accepted jobs he disliked for the purpose of earning money. Nowadays, money is no longer a problem, since he allegedly earns 400,000 RMB per episode. Kevin has much more freedom with his career and is able to expand his opportunities.

Currently basing his career in mainland, Kevin is busy producing dramas to be sold to broadcasting companies. Besides acting, he also participates in the scriptwriting process. Earlier, he sold his car and house in Hong Kong and moved into a services apartment. “I don’t spend much time in Hong Kong.” He explained. “Without a car, I can save some money. Living in a serviced apartment also saves me time from housework.” However, Kevin emphasized that he is not going to move to mainland permanently, and it was only for career purposes. “I’m still going to live in Hong Kong. It’s just that my career will be based in mainland.”

After filming for the drama at hand, Kevin will return to Hong Kong to film a movie. He will then fly back to mainland for another drama. Near the end of the year, he will head back to Hong Kong to promote his new record album, which will consist of 10 tracks. With his fully packed schedule, it looks like Kevin Cheng has no time to film for TVB this year. “I don’t think I can film [for TVB] this year. Next year, I will be filming a TVB drama produced by Amy Wong (王心慰) though.” The 2013 TV King race will therefore be lacking a popular contender.

Kevin’s romantic life remains dull, but he is not worried. “I’ve only started to develop my career within the mainland market. I must remain focused, placing time for mainland jobs and understanding the requirements. I need to film dramas, stabilize my newly developed production studio, as well as record songs for my new album. There is really no time nor energy to date.”

Earlier, rumors spread that director Lee Lik Chi (李力持) was not on good terms with Kevin, and had criticized him for his poor Mandarin. In response to the rumors, Kevin exclaimed, “That’s ridiculous. I am not very familiar with Director Lee, because we’ve never even collaborated. There was only once when we discussed a drama for more than an hour, but we never spoke in Mandarin.”

Kevin revealed that he would feel unhappy about such rumors in the past, and would ask himself why they emerged. Now, he is used to the negativity within the industry, and he no longer minds.

  1. At least he didn’t totally forget the well that gave him water all these year and will still come back to film for TVB series next year.

    1. Kidd,
Kevin is also doing it for Amy Wong, who was his talent scout, casting him in “Burning Flame 2” and “Under the Canopy of Love”.

This year is such a big year for Kevin. Signing with EEG, maybe Kevin may even star in a few movies.

    2. Yeah I agree. Unlike the ungrateful actors/ actresses that abandon and backstab Stephen Chow after earning enough money. Without Stephen Chow they would be nothing.

  2. Well, he better not flop again since he’s burning so many bridges. I can understand building on a momentum, but this seems pretty ungrateful to a company that really carried him to stardom. I wish him luck, because I don’t think he’d be able to make another come-back if he did flop again.

    1. Advo,
Kevin seems to place his bets on his own production studio, eager to produce a quality drama with his first released work.

If Kevin had the time, he would likely have accepted “Bu Bu Jing Xin 2”.

I don’t find him to be ungrateful, if so he wouldn’t have committed to filming Amy Wong’s drama in 2013.

      1. just because an artist doesnt accept a job does it really mean theyre being ungrateful

      2. When I say he’s ungrateful, it’s because he just became hot and he’s dumping TVB immediately. Not even waiting around, giving a little of his fame back to the company that bought him to the top. Now get me wrong, I don’t begrudge him moving on to better things, it’s that he’s basically cut almost all ties. He will film the drama for Amy Wong in 2014 – maybe. We’ll see.

    2. He did agree to BBJX-2 but because of script changes or whatever, I read that shooting has to be rescheduled and that clashed with his other commitment. Would be nice if he could have a cameo though.

He has always been grateful to VL who took him under her wings and am sure she approved. He’s not the ungrateful type.

  3. Yes, I do agree with you that Kevin is not an ungrateful sort of person. He once said that as long as Ms Lok is still in TVB he will never leave her and I do believe in what he has promised. What film I wonder?

    1. Isn’t Lok this in the company? Yet Kevin is not filming. I have to assume he doesn’t have a long-term contract because how else can he get out of filming for TVB a whole year? Not to mention moving and selling his stuff, because according to himself he will now focus on the Mainland market. He’ll come back next year to film for Amy Wong as a favour, but that sounds like a one-off deal.

  4. awww sad that he won’t be filming a tvb series this year, but glad to hear that he hasn’t forgotten about Amy Wong!! after all she did cast him in pretty much every single series for like six or seven years. well i wish he good luck this year in China and his singing career, but really want to see him in a TVB series soon!!!!

  5. I also don’t feel that Kevin is like that at all, especially after all that he has been through to be where he is now…

  6. I hope Amy Wong will put Kevin in a series that’s really good, and any of the fadans would, I’m sure, be too happy to be his partner.

    1. I think the good and experienced ones are Tavia and Charmaine, both of whom collaborated with him before but Myolie seems to have good chemistry with him.

Just watched GJ 1 & 2 and Kevin really shone through in that series. So natural, all his ‘sei tong / buddies’ were spot-on casting (especially Jazz Lam).

  7. I just hope his next drama will be decent because the last one was lame, serious bad acting, and no originality whatsoever on the plot >_< earning good money is good, but please choose good project, I do hope that now he got his own production company and doing his own script it will be a lot better than the train wreck drama from last yr :p

  8. I wonder what series Kevin will produce? Cios he really looks good in ancient. best wishes to Kev!

  9. i dont miss him. beside his good acting in ghetto justice 1,i never found him a good actor.many ppl likes his good look but i think bosco, lam fung and kenneth ma is more good looking than him.
