Meng Meiqi Accused of Being a Boyfriend Stealer
The Chinese entertainment industry continues to unfold more shocking news. With 2021 almost coming to an end, the latest artiste to be caught in a scandal is popular singer Meng Meiqi (孟美岐), who was previously part of girl group, Rocket Girls 101.
On October 25, screenshots of Meng Meiqi’s conversation with music producer Chen Lingtao (陳令韜) surfaced, leading to speculations that he had cheated on his ex-girlfriend with the 23-year-old singer.
Texts Point to Cheating
Chen Lingtao’s ex-girlfriend posted screenshots on her Weibo account, and began the post with the words, “There will not be a fourth anniversary,” In the screenshots, Meng Meiqi and Chen Lingtao exchanged highly flirtatious texts, and showed indications that the two have spent numerous nights together at a hotel while on vacation.
In another set of screenshots, Chen Lingtao was being confronted by his girlfriend who asked if he is now officially dating Meng Meiqi. In the conversation, the musician openly confirmed his relationship status with Meng Meiqi.
In a matter of hours, Meng Meiqi lost over 10,000 fans and her existing endorsements wanted to drop their partnerships.
Meng Meiqi’s Company Releases Statement
Entertainment company, Yuehua Entertainment, released an official statement claiming that all rumors of Meng Meiqi’s third-party status are false and the singer is currently single.
Meng Meiqi confirmed, “I dated Chen Lingtao for a short time, but we have have already split.” She also stated that Chen Lingtao said he was single before going out with him. However, she confirmed that she did go on vacation to Nyingchi, Tibet with Chen Lingtao.
When the media confronted her about the screenshots of text conversations between Chen Lingtao and his ex-girlfriend, Meng Meiqi exclaimed, “I rarely go on the Internet, and I received all of this from my staff. When I saw this, I was shocked and the first thing I did was to call him and ask him why he lied to me. I didn’t want to be inexplicably known as a third party. I just wanted a simple and beautiful relationship.”
Chen Lingtao, on the other hand, released a long statement on his Weibo, apologizing to his friends, family and to everyone he has hurt. Aside from gaining no sympathy from the public, his post received backlash as it resembled a suicide note. Many netizens criticized him for being irresponsible and for wanting to take his own life, rather than owning up to his faults.
