Natalie Tong’s Idea About Love
After two high-profile relationships with Amigo Chui (崔建邦) and Tony Hung (洪永城), 37-year-old Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) has learned that she must learn to love herself first.
Looking as though she has not aged a single day since entering the industry 15 years ago, Natalie has matured from being the typical girl-next-door to the sophisticated woman she is now. Thinking back to her younger days, Natalie recalled, “When I was a model, I didn’t limit myself and would wear whatever I wanted because I thought that that being an artiste means you shouldn’t set a limit. But a few years ago, I started to wonder if I can even be my old self again. Being dressed in revealing clothing used to feel really odd, but I’ve learned that women should accept and learn more about themselves. You need to love yourself – starting from your body. It doesn’t matter if you have a great body or not, you can always attempt the sexy concept – maybe it’ll boost your confidence.”
Natalie gained recognition for her role in My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人> and won Best Actress at the 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards. As one of the few lead actresses who didn’t compete in Miss Hong Kong or graduate from TVB’s acting class, Natalie started out with minor roles and worked her way up.
When she entered the industry, Natalie’s goal was to portray various roles and enjoy acting. Her career suffered many bumps along the way, and she didn’t have dramas lined up for nine months prior to filming My Unfair Lady. Winning Best Actress was a bonus.
When she was not filming, Natalie enrolled in acting classes in order to improve herself. Feeling lucky to have met her teacher, Natalie learned that having the extra free time allowed her to slow down and use the time in a reflective manner. The rise of new highly promoted actresses at TVB only makes her work harder. Never comparing herself to her other colleagues, Natalie said everyone’s purpose is different and they should learn to choose their own appropriate lifestyles.
One of her closest friends is Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), who is someone whom Natalie could turn to whenever she has problems. Having lost her mom a few years ago, Natalie was able to share her feelings freely with Kristal. Praising Kristal for her honesty and straight-forwardness, Natalie learned a lot from Kristal and thanked her for being in her life.
Currently, Natalie’s love life is a blank sheet. However, she is not in a hurry to rush into anything serious and is slowly learning to love herself. She expressed, “I have never made a list of qualities that I look for in a man. I think the most important thing is feeling. Even if you find a boyfriend who matches all your requirements, it doesn’t mean you’ll be happy. Finding someone who loves you is what really matters.”
