“Ossan’s Love” Makes a Dent in “Murder Diary’s” Ratings

The Hong Kong television ratings for the week ending July 2 was released yesterday. ViuTV’s boys’ love drama Ossan’s Love <大叔的愛> reached 6.4 viewership weekly ratings, while TVB’s Murder Diary <刑偵日記> shockingly received only 17.5 points. With both dramas premiering last Monday during the 9:30 p.m. slot, Ossan’s Love appears to have caused viewers to switch channels.

Featuring Kenny Wong (黃德斌) and MIRROR’s Edan Lui (呂爵安) and Anson Lo (盧瀚霆), Ossan’s Love‘s hilarious plot quickly engaged viewers. The series broke ratings records for ViuTV, helping the station’s viewership double from the prior week’s Beauty and the Best <造美人>.

Although TVB’s Murder Diary features a stellar cast including Kara Hui (惠英紅) and Vincent Wong (王浩信), the drama has already aired on myTV Gold and Youku. Feedback for Murder Diary has been polarized, with some viewers loving the unconventional crime thriller but others finding the story to be confusing. With first-week ratings only an abysmal 17.5 points, Murder Diary is one of the worst performers in TVB’s free-to-air lineup this year.

Other TVB programs fared better and maintained consistent ratings. Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <愛.回家之開心速遞> continued to hold steady with only a slight drop in ratings compared to last week, pulling in 22.5 points. Eliza Sam (岑麗香) and Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) Plan B <寶寶大過天> received at 21.9 points. Music competition STARS Academy <聲夢傳奇> rose to 17.1 points.

Lastly, TVB’s Sunday variety shows showed a decline. TVB’s All Star Games <明星運動會>received 16.9 points, Jade Solid Gold <勁歌金曲> had 10.5 points, and Love for My Home Hong Kong <尋找家香情> received 7.8 points.

  1. Not surprised. My family is watching Murder Diary and my mother and elder sister say it’s boring and confusing as well. This type of drama is generally not well liked by the general family that requires attention and deep thinking. Simpler, straight to the point although cliche and terrible plot like Plan B are more suited to the general family, not to mention that it had pre-air showings available somewhere else also impacted the actual airing viewership.

  2. Viutv is like hongkongtv before, concentrate more on good acting and good plot – rather than good looks and good packaging. They give the actors who were overlooked and underused yet very competent the chance to showcase themselves. I am very happy to hear people are realizing they don’t have to give tvb the power to monopolize.

    1. Amen to that! Loved watching tvb growing up, but not the monopoly that it has. Will be good to see viutv topple tvb down the road…

  3. with the recent events in HK I doubt people want to watch another cop drama. Having said that, Murder Diary’s script is a big improvement over other crime dramas like Flying Tiger but the execution and is confusing for viewers. It wasn’t until 5 episodes in until I really got the gist of it.

    1. I forgot to mention, I love kara hui btw. Her acting never lacks. I was just talking about tvb in general nowadays 🙂

  4. murder diary is more like western drama with style of story telling, character development and level of complicity. if one misses a scene, one could easily get confused or lost. I have not seen this type of depth in asian drama. the usual tvb drama are mostly stories that you could guess what happened before and after by just watching the middle parts.
ossan’s love is comical and free. mostly i think the rating were boasted with the legion of mirror fans. the story itself is a refreshing romcom with the intro of BL in HK drama and breakthrough in the actors’ acting.
i enjoy murder diary much more b/c it is so different from any other asian production i’ve seen. i hope that they don’t diverge from introducing unconventional breakthroughs just b/c of a few short term drops in rating
