Matthew Ho: “Rebecca Zhu is a Wonderful Girl”

TVB artists Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗) and Matthew Ho (何廣沛) have been a rumored item since their collaboration in 2017’s A General, a Scholar, and a Eunuch <超時空男臣>, but just like how rumors are intangible, so is Rebecca and Matthew’s relationship. To say they’re dating is quite a stretch, but would dating be an option in the future? Only they will know.

“[Rebecca] is a wonderful girl,” said Matthew. “When we first started work for A General, we weren’t very close, so there wasn’t much of a relationship beyond being just colleagues. But we slowly warmed up to each other, and by the time the drama premiered, we noticed how much the fans liked us together. They liked our chemistry, so the company paired us up again for The Great Sauce Factory <大醬園>.”

In their new TVB drama, Rebecca and Matthew play a bickering pair who go from hating each other, to tolerating each other, to being friends, and to being lovers. Rebecca and Matthew’s relationship deepened, and Matthew found himself getting closer and closer to his costar. He praised, “She doesn’t have the attitude of a ‘Kong girl’ at all. She’s so easy to get along with.”

Matthew maintains that he and Rebecca are still friends, but is looking forward to see what the future will hold for them. “We are both observing,” he explained. Asking if it’s appropriate to call him a single man, Matthew said, “I don’t think it’s convenient for me to answer that right now!”

The TVB actor celebrated his 31st birthday in Thailand, with friends, family, and of course, Rebecca.

“We went to Thailand with a group of friends,” Rebecca explained. “Our friends brought along their families. It wasn’t just Matthew’s birthday, but a general celebration for August birthdays among our friends. Since I had nothing scheduled that week, it was the perfect time for me to go on vacation. I haven’t had one in years.”

Rebecca was then pushed to answer the big question: will she call Matthew her boyfriend soon? She said, “We are both still friends. [Dating] is something that would require more time to observe.”

On what birthday cake she gave Matthew, she said, “We all just bought and cut the cake for him. He is a happy person who doesn’t ask for much. He said I am not like a Kong girl, and while I don’t know what a Kong girl really entails, I assume he’s saying that I’m not materialistic? Matthew himself is also not someone like that. He’s very filial and responsible with his money.”

Rebecca continued, “Thank you to Matthew for his appreciation and praises. I am very thankful. I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with him again for Factory. He is a very serious actor, and also a gentleman. I had no assistant, so he would be the one to help me carry things. I am not the only person he helps. If someone needed help, he would reach out. He is a very passionate and loving person.”

Rebecca’s praises for Matthew didn’t stop there: Matthew is intelligent, well-prepared, and a bright man with many ideas. He would always be prepared with multiple ways on how to act out a scene, and he is very receptive to his costars. He makes communication a priority when it comes to collaborating with his costars, opening the floor for different ideas.

Rebecca is the winner of 2011’s Miss Hong Kong Pageant, and the media likes to portray the 31-year-old as one of Hong Kong’s most favorite goddesses. “I don’t know if I really have that many pursuers,” she said humbly. “All I know is that I need to better myself. If that is true, then I thank you all! I honestly don’t feel like I have that many pursuers in my life. At this stage I just want to concentrate on my career, because it still needs work.”
