Ruco Chan Discusses His Own GPS in Life

Although current TVB series Reality Check <心路GPS>, which stars Ruco Chan (陳展鵬 ), has only achieved 26 points in ratings, netizens are supporting and praising the actor for his portrayal of a filial foster son in the drama.

Ruco’s journey in the entertainment industry has certainly had its share of ups and downs. After struggling to make a name for himself as a singer then as a lead actor at ATV, it was not until he returned to TVB a few years ago that he finally found fame. “There were times when I considered leaving the industry.  After contemplating it a little bit more, I told myself that as a man who used to be an athlete, I shouldn’t run away when I come across a difficult situation. I need to face it.”

It is a little known fact that Ruco was on the Hong Kong Table Tennis team at a tender age of 15 and won numerous trophies. It was a big change to step into the entertainment industry as an athlete. Ruco admitted, “As an athlete, you place your sole focus on the sport itself. You keep practicing the same skills over and over and never really need to communicate with anyone. Winning a tournament is the best display of your skills. However, as an actor, you need to use your communication skills to let others know how good you are and convince them for more opportunities.” Perhaps if Ruco did not become an actor, he would be a ping pong instructor today.

When asked about his own direction or “GPS” in life, Ruco said, “Just trying to do my best and not let society dictate how I should act or behave. I also don’t like to think too far ahead because the future is so uncertain. I might lose a sense of myself.”

Ruco hopes to film more dramas followed by movies and eventually going back to singing again. “Obviously there won’t be as many opportunities as I’ve enjoyed these past few years. If I can come across at least one or two solid roles each year, I will put my best efforts into them. At this moment, I feel like my GPS is on the right track!”

    1. I do too. My predictions are correct, ratings are not as good and i just know HK people do not like meaningful series. All series that have a bit of meaning, ratings were never good. I personally like it so far.

  1. This series fking boring. It’s all crazy boring drama. Come on, nobody wanna watch something that is sad in every episode.

    1. Agree. The episodes get from sad, sadder then to tragic. Soon it could be disturbing.

  2. I hate how people complain about TVB’S plots but nobody likes something new and different. I really think this was a heart-tugging series that addresses family, financial and overall the hong kong reality for most people. I love Ruco Chan’s voice. Who knew he sang so well? Even though his singing career was a flop….

  3. I think I like him more than Kenneth Ma and Moses Chen. I’m glad he is a lead now.

    1. OMG, So true Ruco is way way better than alot of these so called leads in TVB right now so hopefully he will get more n more popular. But such goods storyline and plots HK audiences wouldn’t like cuz i always feel they like the most stupid series but not some w/good substance and where you can reflect on in today’s society. Sorry to say this, but they are pretty tasteless.

      1. Perhaps they are already living that already???? Dont want to be reminded how miserable their lives is? Most people want entertainment to make them happy and not miserable. My opinion…

      2. -Ray
You might be right. They probably ARE those spoiled kids and children who does not care for their parents aahahaa..so why remind themselves of this by watching haaha…

    2. I totally agree Ruco is way better than Kenneth and Moses. Ruco should take TV King this year.

  4. What a bloody shame! Ruco Chan is fantastic in this series and the stories, whilst repetetive and getting on my nerves were however full of heart! Come on HK, surely this is those series you like to watch or must Har Yu guest appear and start clapping like mad and Ruco starts talking in rhyme before it gets better ratings?!

  5. The ratings seem to reflect that the audience do not know how to appreciate a series as good as this! I’m surprised that its actually so good. Absolutely love Ruco Chan and it and Lee Sze Kei’s acting is top notch.

    1. You are so right. I know, HK audiences are just tasteless. Any stupid series w/repeatitive plots and storylines they get high ratings, any shows that are meaningful and refreshing plots, HK audience just do not like them for some reason. This series is right on w/the spoiled children these days and do not have the traditional filial piety as should be.

      1. Karen,
Since I didn’t watch ATV series in the 1990s, I didn’t discover Ruco until “The Threshold of a Persona” but I didn’t like his character in the series. Only a fan after “The Other Truth”.

  6. Apparently HK audience loves the ‘let me destroy you so I am the sole heir/ruler of this business/family/kingdom’ theme. Shame.

  7. It’s a family series minus all the over-the-top drama. It’s plain compared to the other series of the same genre. But Ruco is doing a good job, and he is looking smoking hot in those tees!

    1. I love this drama. I love Ruco Chan’s singing & acting improving tremendously.
In fact if “Lucky Charm” is on his side, he will rise better than Kenneth Ma

  8. ruco has the potential to be lead actor…good acting skils n look, just need the right opportunity

  9. I love this series & Ruco is going a great job. Great acting from the supporting cast.

  10. I didn’t know he was an athlete but he does look like one, and I didn’t expect him to be a HK Table Tennis athlete either, I’ve watched him since his debut at TVB and you can tell he has talent! He is way better than a lot of actors in TVB right now, even Raymond Wong who also came from ATV, he was very good but after Ruco, he seemed so average. I love Ruco’s acting so much!

As for GPS, the first 5 episodes were awesome, then after the dad died and the mom started gambling it seemed to start getting boring, maybe Louise is just not right for a gambling mother role.

    1. @wing keep on watching. I felt that eps 10&11 a bit boring too coz it was getting slow and repetitive but soon from there you will be amazed by everybody’s good acting esp Ruco and CK je! Im sure she can convince you!

  11. The ratings do not do justice to the stories and fine actings of Ruco and Louise. Ruco shines in a few scenes with Louise and Priscilla Wong; the crying scene was great.

    1. Love Ruco in this series, both in looks n acting-he’s awesome. BTW, episode 15’s viewing rate has soared to 30 pts.avg. highest 31 pts., probably due to Ruco’s crying scene.

  12. Ruco is such a natural and versatile actor. I hope you win TVB King this year:)

    1. So do I. But it’s not easy as he is not senior enough in tbb. He might face jealousy and even boycott from other artistes.

  13. “Just trying to do my best and not let society dictate how I should act or behave. I also don’t like to think too far ahead because the future is so uncertain. I might lose a sense of myself.”

    Words of wisdom.

  14. He is one deep, analytical, philosophical guy.. Even linda chung admires this trait of his.. this side was Probably nurtured during his struggling years…

  15. this show is just heart wrenching. Her children are unbelievable – i seriously cannot understand how anyone can behave like that!
