Ruco Chan Sets Aside Love Life to Focus on Career
Acting for 19 years, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) once had lofty aspirations, but the seasoned actor is now in tune with the realities of the entertainment industry. Pegged as one of the most promising leading men at TVB, Ruco cherishes his career opportunities and has decided to put romance aside.
Graduating from TVB’s Artist Training Class in 1994, Ruco had lofty expectations but the only roles he had were cameos. He left TVB to became a singer under Polygram, but his music career had a short life when the company was acquired by Universal. Ruco continued to sharpen his acting skills as he appeared in movies, ATV dramas, and mainland productions before rejoining TVB in 2008. It was only after his highly acclaimed portrayal of Keith Lau in The Other Truth <真相> did Ruco rise to leading status and achieved wider recognition.
With many siu sangs filming in mainland China, TVB has heavily utilized Ruco in the past year. His portrayal as Director Summer Ha in the currently aired Reality Check <心路GPS> received praises. Ruco’s upcoming scenes include Love Exceeds the Coastline <情越海岸線>, Ruse of Engagement <叛徒>, Brother’s Keeper <巨輪> and Unrequited Love in Two Cities <單戀雙城>. Ruco admits feeling tired, filming nonstop over the last year and half.
Cannot Afford to Rest on His Laurels
Earning as little as $300 HKD a day in his early career, Ruco dared not slow down his pace even though he has already earned TVB Siu Sang status. Many nights, Ruco only slept 2 to 3 hours during hectic filming periods. Ruco made sure to prepare fully for his roles, working through mealtimes to discuss with his costars how to act in their upcoming scenes.
Ruco said, “I really would love to take a break, but I have no choice. Now that I am given the opportunity, I have to make the most of it. Over the last half year, I can only tell myself to keep going and not give up so easily.”
Ruco’s success today has been hard-earned through his perseverance and optimism. Though his initial start had been tough, it was never in Ruco’s heart to give up. Even when he played minor roles, he found joy from acting and the people he worked with. “I enjoy what I do. Even when I’m 50, I doubt I would stop doing this. The truth is, to stop or not is not within my control. Whether I can stay will entirely depend on the viewers.”
The young and ambitious Ruco had aspired to win awards when he first joined acting. Though winning trophies is not new to the table tennis prodigy, acting awards are a different story. Ruco said, “When I first entered the industry, of course I wanted to win awards. But when one loses every single time, one will no longer have any expectations.”
Ruco had dealt with many losses and upsets in his winding entertainment career, allowing him to finally improve. The modest 35-year-old insisted that he is only in the “high school” stage of his career. Since Ruco does not place so much importance on winning, he can spend more time and energy on honing his acting skills by observing good actors.
Love is Uncertain
The pragmatic Ruco would rather spend more time building his career which has finally come to fruition, than to spend time on love, which he described as uncertain. Ruco said, “Now that I have been given so many good opportunities, why risk losing them for something that is uncertain like love?”
Ruco added, “Love does not have any guarantee. By focusing on my career now, at least I will get something back, be it money or a sense of satisfaction. On the other hand, I can love a person, but she may not love me back at all. It is that simple.”

Absolutely love Ruco Chan in Reality Check! His crying scenes are so raw and real that I can feel the heartbreak that the character is going through. I’ve always thought that Ruco is a good actor and I can’t wait to see more of him this year.

Reality Check has proven that he’s not a one trick pony like most tvb current actors (rl included). i’m happy for him to finally being able to make a decent living doing what he loves. as for his personal life i have no interest, hope he can live a normal & not have to lie/hide about his love life to become an idol. the man is in his mid 30s let’s hope he has a normal dating life. best of luck!

A lot of people think Ruco as uncle, which he is only 34, I think he always pair with older actress in the past. I remember in Love Miracle he was sort of in love with Amy Chan.

Also his golfing habit has given him a dark tan and etched some lines on his face.

Agree, and he can sing too. How many actors can you say are good looking and can sing well? Not many, many just sing for the sake of their leading status but I think Ruco has a great voice.
