Sandy Lam Signs With Universal Music, Inducing Kay Tse’s Departure?
Music legend, Sandy Lam (林憶蓮), announced that she will be joining Universal Music Group. At the press conference, Universal executive, Duncan Wong (黃劍濤) gave Sandy a guitar as a gift, while advertisers gave a digital microphone valued at over six figures to congratulate her new partnership with Universal. Sandy indicated that her production company will collaborate with Universal via a two-year contract, whereby she will launch one Cantonese and two Mandarin albums.
Sandy’s partnership with Universal allegedly accelerated Kay Tse’s (謝安琪) contract termination with the company. Sandy professed that the two events were not related, “I do not believe that [Kay’s decision] is related to me.” Duncan Wong acknowledged that he was currently discussing contract termination matters with Kay Tse. After Kay completes a Leslie Cheung (張國榮) commemorative performance, she did not have any further jobs lined up. Asked whether this will be her final project with Universal, Duncan said, “You cannot say that. The legal documents have not been finalized yet. We have continued to negotiate with Kay’s manager and respect the rules of the game.” Asked whether he has maintained contact with Kay Tse, Duncan said, “It is not convenient at this time, but we can communicate through text message.”

Is still relevant in terms of albums and recordings? I am sure she will have a huge audience in concerts, for nostalgia’s sake but albums? Can she still sell records?

Heard of Sandy’s first new song after her joining back to the music industry..it was soooooo sweet and nice. Her voice is indeed really good.
i hate to say this but i’m sure she won’t be coming out with any good songs. The 90s is long gone and that classic pop doesn’t seem to be in anyone music anymore. I’m sure Sandy would try to come up with songs that are today’s flavor and that would suck. Today music sucks! Look at American 80s and 90s iconic musicians. None of they got any good songs after the 90s. Same with every artists in the 90s in the world.

I disagree; I think Sandy will see moderate to very good success with her comeback. It was mentioned that she will release 2 Mandarin albums and 1 Cantonese album, thus I think Universal is eager to pitch Sandy’s reputation and vocals towards the greater mainland market rather than just Hong Kong. The HK record companies need to look beyond Hong Kong if they want to chase after bigger profits. HK may have the marketing power, but they have lacked power vocals for some time. I think Sandy’s comeback will be welcome.
Sandy may be an icon of the 90s, but the style of the music can be adapted to sound modern and fresh with good vocals.
As for the downloading affecting sales, every singer is faced with the same issue.
