Seen on TV All the Time, Ruco Chan’s Rise to the Top

With starring roles in many of the year’s biggest dramas, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) is on track to become TVB’s top artist. Although he has struggled for most of his career, timing and luck are finally on his side. His good looks and talent also made the trip up the ranks that much easier, helping him secure his spot next to the rest of the TV station’s first-line artists.

Despite entering the industry at seventeen, Ruco did not gain mainstream recognition until his first TVB starring role in 2011’s The Other Truth <真相>. Director Amy Wong (王心慰), who contributed greatly to Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) and film king Anthony Wong’s (黃秋生) careers, became Ruco’s mentor. She groomed him further with eclectic roles in No Good Either Way <衝呀!瘦薪兵團>, Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, and the upcoming Ruse of Engagement <叛逃>. Known to produce provocative series that are heavily driven by the internal struggles of its characters, Wong has given Ruco the perfect opportunities to stretch his acting skills and prove his worth in front of millions.

Wong is not the only one who has acknowledged Ruco’s talent. TVB also recognizes his potential and seems to have come up with a game plan to push him to the top. After the generally positive reception of Outbound Love <單戀雙城>, his first starring role in 2014, Ruco will next appear in Ruse of Engagement, a highly anticipated police thriller that was kept in inventory since 2011. Next will be a role in ICAC Investigators 2014 <廉政行動2014>, the new installment of the popular anti-corruption series. Although air dates have not been confirmed, viewers may see Ruco again this year in All That is Bitter is Sweet <大藥坊>, as well as crime thriller Eye in the Sky <天眼>.

With possibly five series on air this year, Ruco will likely saturate the headlines, and more importantly, the viewers’ minds. Some believe that this will give him a solid edge come anniversary awards season. Even if TVB is not ready to make him TV King, Ruco can easily walk away with the My Favorite Character award that typically leads to the higher honors. With a dwindling number of first-line idol actors, Ruco stands a good chance to win over TVB’s demographics with his solid acting skills.

1. “Some believe that this will give him a solid edge come anniversary awards season.”

I don’t think so. It will give him overexposure instead of quality performances. As for awards, my feeling is Ruco is not that high up in TVB’s food chain. Like Nancy he has dedicated fans but generally his popularity is not yet stratosphere mainly because he is always cast in smaller productions with very few cast members and even worse leading actresses when what he needs is a bigger than the usual small productions with lots of male co-stars in a series that is neither about love nor him as some misunderstood good guy. That is to raise his profile. Right now yes he has lots of series coming out or has been released but seriously, whilst he was consistent, the series were mostly terrible. He needs a good script for entire series. He needs Steven Ma’s career. I mean Steven MA basically acted in the same role again and again and again and I still love watching him. His role in that storm cocoon whatever is quite challenging and an actor like Ruco probably can do better than Steven in those angst scenes but not sure if Ruco has the natural honourable good guy vibe that Steven has naturally.

1. At least Ruco Chan is getting more and more lead roles to act in TVB. Eventually he will be appreciated by some big producers to film TVB anniversary productions.

1. ” TVB anniversary productions”

I don’t mean TVB anniversary productions, I mean better productions but smaller than TVB anniversary productions because TVB anniversary productions is always too packed. I mean a bit like Steven Ma or Bobby Au Yeung but with better female leads, better story and hopefully better characters. I am always surprised at how low Ruco is in TVB’s “food chain”.

2. Don’t worry. Ruco will get there sooner or later with his good acting.

3. I like Ruco’s voice in both speaking dialogues and singing. He has a very good and strong voice and he is very articulate in his dialogues.

4. @choco-bunny
Thanks for your link. In fact, I like Ruco Chan more than Edwin Siu, both in acting and singing. Ruco has a stronger voice.

However, I never like Ruco’s taste in fashion ….. the way he dresses for special occasions. I would prefer Fred Cheng’s dress codes when he performs.

5. @sandcherry, agree that he has his hits and misses in fashion as with most of the other stars as well, but with his good physique, he manages to still look decent even with the oddest fashion. I love him with Linda and wonder if it’s coincidence both of them sang Beyond’s Lover at their performances just one day apart.

6. Ruco does has a good built, but unfortunately his upper body is long and his legs are rather short for his built. Therefore, he will look good in suits or properly dressed. If he wears tight pants or 3/4 length pants, he shows off his rather short legs. I hope he realizes that.

7. Ruco does not look good either in low-waist pants. It shows off his rather short legs.

8. To me and lots of his fans, he’s just perfect and his body build is sexy as h-ell, too hot to handle.

9. ITA with choco-bunny!

I hardly watch any TVB series and only chanced upon Outbound Love recently. Didn’t know who this Ruco dude is till then.. Sigh.. That hawt body and those sexy eyes! Totally desirable..

10. @choco-bunny
Did Linda Chung participate in Genting Concert with the other artistes of “Brother’s Keeper”? I know Ruco Chan, Edwin Siu, Kristal Tin, and Louise Lee were there. Anyone else?

11. both Ruco & Edwin performed very well at the Genting concert, truly enjoyed the show and no regrets travelling all the way to watch it =D… it was nice watching them LIVE, more powerful than expected, love songs were also sweetly presented ^ ^… i especially love Ruco’s “差半步 (Outbound Love ending theme song)” which was so romantic live, and “小草 (Reality Check theme song)” with the Brother’s Keeper scenes at the screen behind – the song sounds very touching and sad especially with Kiu Tin Sang struggling clips running at the background … Ruco also sang “岁月如歌 (Triumph in the Sky original Eason theme song)”.

both their solo sections are very enjoyable, and i think both sang Jacky Cheung songs but with a different rhythm and mix, sound good too =) … after watching the concert, personally i felt that actually Edwin is more connected and feels closer to the audience at the LIVE performance than his appearance on tv.

both Ruco and Edwin also duet 2 songs, both songs also sound great LIVE at the concert … they sang “友情岁月 (Young & Dangerous Ekin & Jordan theme song)” and of course Brother’s Keeper “巨轮”.

those who bought VIP ticket really had a very valuable purchase, they got to shake hands with everyone … especially Edwin’s exceptional fan service shaking hands with almost the entire crowd at the VIP and front row circle seat.

12. @sandcherry, no, Linda wasnt there.

@anneyen, did you manage to take pics or get autographs. Did you catch him at the hotel? I saw some pics that he took with fans.

13. @choco-bunny … nope =( , didnt get a chance to get his autograph or take pics … i was hanging around the wrong area in genting at the wrong time =P … i did see some photos that he took with fans, after seeing it i regret not walking around that area, i was only just an escalator away =/

anayway, i shouldnt be too greedy though =P … i already had my chance to shake hands with him 3 times, play games, take photo and get a whole lot of prizes presented by him 3 years ago =D

14. @anneyen nvm you’ll hv many chances next time:-)
it was a great concert, Ruco was so hyper. HIs selection of songs was good and suited his vocal range. Really enjoyed the fast opening number and all his slow numbers cos he sang with so much emotions. Ruco’s not only a good actor, he’s also an awesome actor!

15. @choco-bunny … yeah i totally enjoyed the whole concert especially Ruco & Edwin … surprised too, i didnt expect that the show was so good, interesting conversations and great singing =)

felt very high during the fast songs =D … wanted to stand up but the seats are too cramped =P … i was sitting at the the PS2 section YS row, last minute won tickets from magazine contest =P

where were u sitting? u got to snap photos with Ruco?

16. @choco-bunny … wow, youtube got the full concert? … does it contain the in between conversations? … there were alot of interesting dialogues at the concert too =)

17. @choco-bunny … wow, his entire section =) … thank you for the link, now i can re-watch his entire section on screen yipee =D … i was busy enjoying watching the real person than watching the screen at the concert, lol =P

haha the first part Louise Lee asking him the same old question what are the type of girl he likes as a partner … i think this time he added 2 extra points, previously at Astro Award it was only “a girl who would stay at home” … this time 3 points (1)the girl must like sports (2) the girl must stay at home and would cook and eat together (3)the girl must understand his career and watch TVB Dramas.

18. @anneyen, no all along he mentioned that his potential girlfriend must love sports/exercise, but Louise had a different kind of exercise in mind and he was like so embarrassed lol!
Your seat looks pretty far, how can you watch the real person and not the screen?

19. @choco-bunny … haha yah, Louise was having something else in her mind … actually Louise was quite funny, even earlier in her segment she was quite entertaining

the Genting venue is actually not very big … most of the seats have good view and good sound … from my position, i can still see them quite clearly … there are 3 big screens above the stage, it was either showing scenes from the drama, showing some pattern or filming them on stage … so i concentrated viewing them on stage instead =)

20. actually Edwin’s performance that night was also very good … i stated to like him too after watching the concert =)

2. I seriously hope Ruco and Nancy get more opportunities, mainly because they’re both good actors, and that’s kinda hard to find at TVB nowadays.

1. Totally agree. Nancy is even worse in terms of acting opportunities and promotions.

2. Ruco still need more opportunities ??? Lmfao he has got more than needed. I knew I wasn’t wrong when I said Ruco was in like every tvb drama the last 2years or so.

3. By opportunities, I mean dramas with good script, good cast, good plot. It’s better to star in one good drama than to star in 10 bad dramas. Outbound Love, The Other Truth, Brother’s Keeper were all pretty mediocre, and that’s already putting it nicely.

4. Also @TVBFAN, there is a difference between getting opportunities and getting exposure. I think the latter is what you are talking about.

3. @Funn: Completely agree with you! Having the most series doesn’t mean there’s a higher chance for awards — if those series are ‘not-so-good’ productions with an overall weak main cast (i.e. Outbound Love, Slow Boat Home, etc.), it’s not going to help much with awards or popularity among the masses.

Oh and the article is misleading, as that ICAC Investigators series shouldn’t count, since it’s technically an RTHK production that TVB has airing rights for.

What TVB really needs to do is pair Ruco with better leading actresses, as most of the ones they’ve paired him with the past few years were absolutely no match for him in terms of acting level.

2. I used to like Ruco, but the more I see him on tv, it gets boring, he gets to pair with same people over and over again.

1. Agree a lot he just been in like every drama seriously I feel Tvb promotes whoever they wants or who is signed up with them for a long time. I bet Tvb going make Ben Wong the new Kevin Cheng or Wayne Lai. And make Ruco the new Raymond Lam.

3. I personally think that whether or not 天眼 and 大藥坊 is aired this year, it will depend on which 2 series are this year’s TVB anniversary series. If TVB is using any of these 2 as TVB anniversary productions, it would be shown near the TVB anniversary period. But if 天眼 is for a regular broadcast period drama, then it will depends on when it is finished filming and when they are done the post-production work. The filming for 天眼 starts in May and if 天眼 takes 2-3 months to film, the earliest we could watch 天眼 would be during the summer months.

And 廉政行動2014 airs on march 29 as a weekend drama (according to the “list of upcoming TVB dramas” page on Wikipedia).

1. 天眼 …….. Ruco will be co-starred with Kevin Cheng. If he is good, he can showcase his good acting vs. Kevin. Lot of people don’t think Kevin’s acting is very good.

1. I like both actors but i think Ruco’s acting is a few notches above Kevin.

2. Kevin good most of Kevin roles with tvb we’re boring but he still did a good job I like Ruco more

3. Kevin does look blank sometimes onscreen. Ruco’s acting is average though. But better than most currently promoted by TVB.

4. @Choco-bunny of course Ruco is the best actor in the world right better then Kevin Cheng better than Stephen Chow better then Chow yun Fat. And I don’t mean it idk what your think Ruco is not the best.

5. Kevin really good in thriller like when he played Arran and last one standing

4. I love and support Ruco Chan. Love his acting and charm so much. Hope he could reap teh TV King Award this year.

5. I had liked Ruco’s acting ever since I saw him in TOT. Ruco also had a small role in Every Move You Make and When Lanes Merge 🙂

1. I just watched The Other Truth. The series was mediocre, but Ruco saved it from becoming a complete disaster. I also read SDS’s review on TOT and recommend all writers of reviews for this site to visit (or revisit) the article. It was really well written

1. Mt, can you pls provide the link for the TOT review, thx.

2. i like Ruco ever since his ATV dramas especially “Love in A Miracle 爱在有情天” … glad that i bought the VCD and its now in my collection =)

6. Im a big fan of specky Ruco. But when he doesnt put on his decent specs, I dont admire him on screen tat much. He looks like a bad guy without specs!

1. Agree. Ruco looks better with eyeglasses. He looks more like a villain without eyeglasses. Amy Wong, the producer, really helped him change his image in “The Other Truth” from a villain to a good guy.

1. i think ruco looks more like a gentlemen with eyeglasses and without he looks tougher.agree without he may looks more like a villain,he is an versatile actor,i would like to see him playing a comedic character, such like what gallen lo did in old time buddy’s and mr diana,i think he can.

2. You guys who say that he looks like a bad guy without specs are still living in the pre-TOT era where he often acts as a villain (don’t mean to offend but just don’t know how to put it any other way, sorry abt it). Pl allow me to post some recent pics of him without specs.

He doesn’t look like a villain but has a more flirty look without specs and looks years younger. I’m definitely prefer him without specs now.

1. Cannot open your link. I want to see his photos if you said he looked good without eyeglasses.

2. Thanks for all your links. Agree with you that Ruco looked younger in those photos without eyeglasses. I think he looked better recently without eyeglasses. Probably he got hints from a good makeup artiste to help him improve his image.

3. Sorry but with or without glasses he still looks like an accountant-serial killer to me. I like him with glasses because he looks unique and glasses makes his eyes bigger and he can express himself better with different frames. Anyway he looks like he is wearing a lot of foundation/powder on his face in one of the picture. Specs does not age him actually, and no glasses does make him look younger but also make him fade into the background. In a TVB photoshoot he should stand out and his tight pants, curly hair and glasses will do just that.

4. I’ll take this accountant-serial killer anyday!
Right, to stand out, suggest actors sport afros and blinking electric lights specs frames ala Elton John and put on ballet tights.

5. “Right, to stand out, suggest actors sport afros and blinking electric lights specs frames ala Elton John and put on ballet tights.”

Puh leaseeee, with good taste, not to mock oneself or make a fool of oneself.

6. Funn,
Wayne Lai received a tremendous boost in popularity after “Journey to the West”. He is loved by viewers for his comedic and dramatic skills. Before being promoted to lead actor, he was already well liked by older viewers.

Ruco has the acting talent. But he appears to be a bit careful with people, and only feels comfortable with certain people. Perhaps he may need to broaden his social skills in order to snag those top-caliber productions in TVB.

7. choco-bunny,

I like Ruco in conservative glass frames, like in The Other Truth, but not overly outrageous fashion-statement frames, such as the white-rimmed glasses he wore at the TVB Anniversary.

Actually his new haircut makes him look younger. I like him without glasses for a change as well, as he was seen everywhere with frames for the last 3 years.

8. heheh, relax…….of cos I’m joking abt the loud specs, afro do and ballet tights….

9. “Wayne Lai received a tremendous boost in popularity after “Journey to the West”.”

Actually I call ut a “reboost” because he had his boost earlier in that series about Guangzhou people with Mui Siu Wai. But never as a lead actor until much later.

10. “Ruco has the acting talent. But he appears to be a bit careful with people, and only feels comfortable with certain people.”

I think it is not his problem. He is cast with the same people in same roles. I call it TVB politics. If TVB can do away with their gangs and clubs, we as viewers sure will get to see more varied pairings.

11. i think ruco no need to “broaden” his social skills,he is what he is and thats fine.i rather see ruco having a good career through his acting skills then through his social skills.

12. @kolo

It is really important to have social and people skills especially artists, who have to deal with many different people/artists and also the media. Having a good career = need to be able to broaden network

13. sheldon you can call me naive, but to make “friend” with someone just because you want something back in your favour, isnt this a bit fake? i think if i you are doing so then you are not yourself anymore.i believe if you have talent and always devoted to your work is already enough and the rest is up to luck.

14. “Ruco has the acting talent. But he appears to be a bit careful with people, and only feels comfortable with certain people.”

I disagree with this as well — yes, there is a certain amount of social skill needed to survive in the entertainment industry, but in TVB’s case, it really goes back to the way they manage their artists and run their station (pretty much it boils down to the ‘politics’ like Funn mentioned). TVB is notorious for not managing their talents well (with some exceptions of course) and all these years, their primary tactic continues to be overexposure and 24/7 promotion of certain artists — that’s one thing that hasn’t changed throughout the decades, it’s just that the tactic worked better and audiences were more accepting of it back during the Golden Era because there truly was a massive pool of talent at the time (which also made the overexposure less noticeable, since there were plenty of artists to ‘balance’ things out).

Nowadays, there is so little talent left at TVB that when they do the overexposure thing, it becomes annoying….

15. llwy12,
“their primary tactic continues to be overexposure and 24/7 promotion of certain artists — that’s one thing that hasn’t changed throughout the decades”

This tactic is utilized by Virginia Lok, who liked to promote artists that are marketable based on their looks, personalities and commercial appeal more than acting talent. Ms. Lok emphasized artists’ commercial value and their contributions through promo events and endorsements.

Back in the 90s, artists such as Wong He, Steven Ma, Gordon Lam, etc. were promoted based on their acting skills and less tie-ins with commercial endorsements.

16. @Jayne:This tactic is utilized by Virginia Lok, who liked to promote artists that are marketable based on their looks, personalities and commercial appeal more than acting talent.

You omitted to include that VL also likes to promote and market artists based on fabricated romance rumors. And Steven Ma had said as far back as 2006 that he would not co-operate in any fabricated tabloid romantic rumors. And as for commercial appeal/value read what Steven’s long time manager, Tsui Yong Yong, had to say about that. I’m of the opinion that VL had it in for Steven just because he was her nemesis Catherine Tsang’s faithful ‘lead horse’ , not because of his looks, or personality or commercial appeal.

Quote from Tsui Yong Yong: “You are willing to develop newbies who are obedient to you but ignore this golden horse, for whom, despite my inexperience as job seeker, I could still get him a job worth over millions of dollars.[..]

It is not that Steven does not have a drawing power; every month lots of people contacted me to invite Steven for performance appearances, but after negotiating the terms and conditions, and duly transferring the offers to tvb, many of them due to various reasons were inexplicable rejected by someone. I have personally experienced this whereby after handing them (job offers) to the (tvb) manager to follow-up, most went in and never came back out. This situation I know, Steven knows, but who can we tell it to?

17. Look at Ruco’s recent news reports. Most if not all are articles of baseless and inconsequential romance rumors with various actresses, while ironically praising Aimee for her performance in OL, the news totally ignored Ruco’s. But that’s how VL promotes her artists.

18. @Jayne: You are correct about VL, however I was referring more to overexposure in terms of TVB casting the same artists in series over and over again and then strategizing the way the series aired (in conjunction with appearances on variety programs and such) so that certain artists seemed to appear on audience’s TV screens constantly. This has been done since the beginning of time pretty much and continues to be done even today — except that when VL took over the artists’ department, she really pushed it to the max through all the commercial events and endorsements…and yes, her strategy was to base on looks and commercial appeal rather than acting talent….same overall tactic, just put into practice slightly differently than previous management.

3. He does kind of look like a pedo or a villain without his glasses I guess it cause of the super small eyes and sharp nose.

7. To date, rucos role in the other truth is still my fav!!

Not to mention the great chemistry between him and the whole cast, especially tavia

8. After having seen a number of series with Ruco in them I’ve come to like him and his acting and in time to come he’ll surely rise to become one of the TVB greats. All the best to Ruco!

9. i like ruco too,but unfortunately his rising is a little bit late,he is almost nearly to his 40 now, how many years can he still play as a siu san?i hope he will win tv king this year.

1. See Michael Miu, still siu sang or rather 2nd time siu sang. See Bobby. See many many more. And he not yet 37? Where got 40?

1. i think that’s because tvb have a little choices in siu san, there are not many siu san’s left in tvb,but when tvb are seriously to find new blood,i think veterans like bobby, roger, etc will have to play second or even third line roles.

2. Kolo that’s what they do promote new people that can take the place of sui sung like Ruco. There going make him the new Raymond Lam but older.

2. He just turned 37 in Jan, still relatively young for a man. Look at Wayne Lai who won BA only when he was 45. But i also hope he’ll win TV king these 2 years.

1. Before there was any BA Wayne was already popular but never had the chance to be first lead until Rosy Business or thereabouts. He didn’t become popular overnight.

I don’t care for Ruco winning TV king , I just want him to be cast in good roles with good co-stars that challenges him.

2. Can’t agree abt the winning part, i still want him to win TV King for whatever the award’s worth cos he deserves the recognition for putting his 100% into every role whether big or small production. I admire his work ethics.

10. ok,wayne is an exception, how many cases like wayne are there in tvb? and how many memorable roles have wayne played after rosy business? if ruco have the chance to enter the movie world he should do it in the coming 2 or 3 of years.

1. After rosy business Wayne hasn’t made much noise with his other roles

1. And things have bee said he was better a supporting actor it’s what I read

2. Wayne has many memorable roles after rosy business, and is great in lead roles. One of the BEST tvb artist and actor who can act. I don’t think Ruco has any actual memorable roles after the truth.

3. Ruco has been in alot of series, but there isn’t a role that has been a big hit or has there been a breakthrough. It just gave ruco great exposure to audience

4. I dare say Wayne is even more popular than Ruco in many ways.

5. I know ruco is a good actor, but he needs to have a good script.

Thank for your support Funn!

6. Wayne Lai is a very casual and warm person. He gets along very well with his colleagues, including producers, co-artistes, and fans. Personally I think Ruco Chan is not as sociable as Wayne Lai in many respects. He has a different personality perhaps.

I heard from a reputable veteran production member in TVB that Ruco would call him “Big Brother” when they met in studios when he was still a supporting actor, but not any more. He might have changed because of his current lead status or he is just too busy to say “Hi” now.

7. Ruco changed cause of the money and fame. Wayne is more popular than Ruco. 3 times best actor or Tvb King whatever you like to call it.

8. “I heard from a reputable veteran production member in TVB that Ruco would call him “Big Brother” when they met in studios when he was still a supporting actor, but not any more. He might have changed because of his current lead status or he is just too busy to say “Hi” now.”

Sandcherry, unless you heard it with yr own ears, that remark was TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND HIGHLY UNCALLED FOR, unless of course, your intention is to cast aspersions on Ruco’s character. This is not the first time that you’ve made a comment (not necessarily about Ruco) that’s clearly a veiled attack and then follow up with another sentence to make it seem like you’re actually all nice and impartial. I know I’m not the first one to say this about you. Stop being such a hypocrite!!
Btw, Ruco’s not that kind of person. He still meets with his ex ATV colleagues and production crew members for dinner (as recently as on his b’day in Jan this year)even though these people clearly are of “no value” to him in advancing his career.

9. a correction to my post (edit button Jayne pls!!!)
what i meant to tell sandcherry is that unless she saw Ruco ignoring the “veteran production member” herself, that remark was uncalled for cos she only heard about it.

10. @buzz
Are you a hypocrite or me???! It seems that you are not any better than I (if I am a hypocrite). You attacked me just because I posted something which could be true but unpleasant about Ruco Chan. Do you know him personally that makes you think I am totally wrong? You don’t have to believe it if you don’t like it. It is your choice. You can ignore it. I have my right to believe it and post it, but you don’t have the right to accuse me of being a hypocrite. There are all kinds of rumours/gossips on this website. I think you will be very busy in attacking many of us.

Anyway, it was a casual statement made by someone who has worked in TVB for over 25 years and holds a position just under a producer. I cannot disclose more details. That particular person never talked about any artistes. He just made the statement very casually when we asked him about Ruco Chan.

11. @buzz
I used to like Ruco Chan very much after watching “The Other Truth” and I still do. No matter how much I like an artiste, I have the right to reassess his personality after hearing that kind of statement. I like Ruco’s acting and singing, but I don’t have to like his personality no matter it is good or not. Acting and personality are two different things to me. I am not an idol fan, but a fan of good acting only.

12. Sandcherry, I think it was probably a 1 time faux pas and I don’t think Ruco is arrogance. He may just be solitary, or what’s that word I used to use for Kevin? A loner? Doesn’t mean he is rude or diva-ish. I find that hard to believe. Ahhh yes yes, cold is the word. Point is he is an entertainer, it matters most when he is animated before the public, as long as he is a decent fellow behind the screens, he can be cold or friendly, it doesn’t matter.

13. sandcherry,
Do you even know what is the meaning of a hypocrite?

quote “You attacked me just because I posted something which could be true but unpleasant about Ruco Chan”unquote

No, this does not make me a hypocrite. FYI, a hypocrite is someone who pretends to be what he is not. You know jolly well the kind of person you are. I’m not the first one to say this about you and I’ve been here long enough. You always make it sound like you’re impartial but you have your faves. You purposely try to attack Ruco’s character by planting doubts in our minds and in the next breath will say something nice to make it seem like you’re not attacking him. Sorry, the damage has been done, the seeds of doubts have been sowed, no amount of trying to justify for him in yr next breath can change anything. It’s like those models in the Bosco Vanessa saga who purposely let slip some nasty tidbit and then try to backtrack and play good guy. You’re like that, so that makes you a hypocrite. I don’t know Ruco personally and neither do you. Yet you swallow the words of that veteran person, hook line and sinker, and “casually” mention it here and for what purpose, may I ask? This is unfair to Ruco who obviously doesn’t read stuff here and can’t defend himself. Unless you have personally seen him snubbing the “unimportant ” people, your comment is nothing but an attack on his character. We don’t even know if this veteran person exists or is just a figment of your imagination. So don’t try to bull s-hit us with your “I’m impartial” nonsense.

14. @buzz
Do you know me well that you called me a hypocrite? You have no right to call another person a hypocrite. It is a personal attack to me. Would you like people to say to you “you are stupid”?

I think most people here think if we like an artiste, we have to like him/her in a package, i.e. his face, his personality, his attitudes, his faults and his acting. I guess it is hard to accept the fact that some fans only care about an artiste’s acting and not his/her personality, and you are one of them. Since I say I like Ruco’s acting and have doubts about his personality, you called me a hypocrite. Sad ………..

15. Correction:
“I guess it is hard to accept the fact that some fans only care about an artiste’s acting and not his/her personality, and you are one of them.”
—————————————————-
It should read:
“I guess it is hard to accept …………….. and you definitely are NOT one of them.”

16. @Funn:
Agree with you that Ruco Chan could be a loner or a cold person. Therefore, Jayne was absolutely right in saying “Perhaps he may need to broaden his social skills in order to snag those top-caliber productions in TVB.”

17. @sandcherry if you only cared about Ruco’s good acting and not an idol fan then what was the point of referencing that incident with the veteran worker from tvb? Goes to show you are a hypocrite with a nasty personality. By nasty I mean the way you diminish other human beings (actors/actresses ARE human beings) and scrutinize them with your disgusting tunnel visioned ruler inside that puney brain of yours. I hope you are not in the education sector or anything remotely related to dealing with young children, humans or even animals (unless the animals are dead).

18. sandcherry, i’ve already explained very clearly why i called you a hypocrite. You seem to hv trouble understanding that’s all.

quote “Since I say I like Ruco’s acting and have doubts about his personality, you called me a hypocrite.” unquote

no, this is not the reason why i called you a hypocrite and i don’t need to know you well or personally to call you that, your actions already call you out. I don’t wish to repeat myself so pl read my previous posts which clearly explain my comment about you. You hv the right to like an artiste as an actor and not a person; for that you’re NOT a hypocrite and i never called you a hypocrite for this reason either, pls don’t try to skew the issue.

19. @Jay
You are even worse than buzz. I just mentioned something that I believed to be true and you made a big fuzz of my personality, brain, and profession. Everyone has a right to believe what he/she thinks it is true, but you don’t have to follow if you think you are so smart.

There are a lot of worse comments on this website. I am sure you will be VERY busy attacking them.

20. @sandcherry, jay is basically just calling you a hypocrite but in a more extreme way. I agree that there’re a lot of worse comments on this website but they’re not the type that make a sneak attack on someone’s character and then backpeddling, pretending to be all nice and innocent.

21. @ buzz
There is nothing wrong for me to believe in a statement made by my friend about Ruco Chan. In fact, I just said I heard it. Also there is nothing wrong for me to like the acting/singing of same actor. It happens all the time. If you cannot accept it, it is your problem. You can agree or disagree, but you don’t have the right to accuse me as a hypocrite.

I think you must be pretty young and immature that you haven’t met all kinds of people. There are many more challenging and complicated people whom you will meet in life.

22. @sandcherry, you still don’t get my point do you? Or are you just pretending? If you’re lacking in basic ethics, I can’t be bothered to engage you further. Stop twisting my words and stop hiding behind the ” I’m older and smarter than you” argument.

23. @buzz
Honestly you and I don’t share the same channel. There is no point to talk to you either. My posts are done with you.

2. I sort of agree with sandcherry that acting and personality are two different things. one maybe good at acting, but can have a bad or negative personality.

sandcherry does have the right to post her thoughts, although it may be negative, it can be true. And that we all know truth is cruel, but should be heard. Fans will definitely defend their idol, but idols are humans too and aren’t perfect and do have flaws.

Artists should be friendly on & behind the screen. Being good on screen & to medias, and being nasty behind the screen, now that’s hypocrite.

1. @jimmy, did you not read my reply to her?

My reply, quote here ” You hv the right to like an artiste as an actor and not a person; for that you’re NOT a hypocrite and i never called you a hypocrite for this reason either” unquote.
Maybe you’re new around her and don’t know sandcherry’s style. I’ll not bother to repeat why i called her hypocrite, i’ve explained myself clearly enough.

As for what you wrote:
“sandcherry does have the right to post her thoughts, although it may be negative, it can be true. And that we all know truth is cruel, but should be heard. ”

With all due respect, i beg to differ. It is one thing to attack an artiste for his acting or singing or dress sense but to attack or cast doubts on a person’s character without proof (which is what sandcherry is doing) is a no no, especially if that person is unable to defend himself in a public forum; it’s simply just not ethical. It’s even worse when the attack is disguised as a “casual” comment with the full knowledge that people tend to believe the worst of what they hear whether it’s proven or not. I hope you can understand now why i took issue with her comment.

2. ….. that people tend to believe the worst of what they hear whether it’s proven or no
—————————————————-
That is your choice. If you think you are that smart, you don’t or shouldn’t have believed it!!!

3. @sandcherry,
obviously i don’t believe what you claim to hv heard. I don’t believe any rumors or hearsay that so and so said this or that, unlike a certain someone.

4. @jimmy
Thanks for your post and support. I guess there are too many fans here who think their idols are perfect in everything they do. They don’t realize that acting and personality are totally two different things. Acting is fake, and personality is real. If an artiste cannot fake his/her personality in acting, he/she will not be a successful artiste.

5. “f an artiste cannot fake his/her personality in acting, he/she will not be a successful artiste.”

^ I truly agree with this. Acting is being someone who you are not! It’s not about acting a person who have the same or almost same personality traits as you in real life It’s also puts that artiste’s acting to the test. Because if they weren’t able to capture the person who they are acting to be, then the acting wasn’t that successful.

If you have to have similar traits as the person who you are acting, how is that even acting?! You might as well do a documentary drama instead!

6. I’ve seen him several times and witnessed how he treated his crew members with genuine respects. We can see from tv how he always make way for his colleagues to speak during interview and avoid standing in the middle for photo session; even when taking group photo with fans, he would volunteer to stand at the back. He is indeed a very low profile and down to earth artiste. Of course he has his fair share of temper as in his reluctance to compromise his principles to gain fame / exposure. He was in Shanghai promoting BK last year, there was a guy interrupted his interview and demanded to take photo with him immediately, he just continued his conversation with reporter and walked away when the interview was over. He is definitely not perfect but I sincerely think he is neither arrogant nor ungrateful.
I am not young and I am his fan, am I bias, probably yes.

7. “He was in Shanghai promoting BK last year, there was a guy interrupted his interview and demanded to take photo with him immediately, he just continued his conversation with reporter and walked away when the interview was over. ”

I think that is a perfect response. So I won’t deduct points from his “perfection”. What a rude little git, that guy.

8. I reside in HK and I often read the entertainment(pai kwo) mags in the clubhouse of my estate. But I never heard of such incident as above mentioned. The Sudden Weekly, which used to bad mouth Ruco, has an article in issue 950 with photos of Ruco and the production crew having tea together and said he’s so nice to them. From interviews, Ruco’s always a low profile, caring person.

9. @pinky, i know which article, i read it too. Asianfanatics forum also shows him having dinner with the ex-ATV crew and he attends dinners with his less well known colleagues from TVB too. I dont believe that he’s a snobbish person at all. And i love his low profile character. In group interviews, he’s always content to let others have the limelight. Rarely can we find this type of character in show biz.

11. LOLOL, read all of ya commentssss makes me laugh and ugh . He may look like a villain, but hes a goddamn HOT villain (:

1. I totally agree with you! He’s smokin’ hot whether as villain or hero.

12. No comments beside I think RUCO have SEXY LIPS.

13. I honestly cannot understand the appeal of this guy. His acting is stiff and his presence is less than dull. I feel that the only reason he is able to reach this first lead caliber is due to the lacking of male leads in recent years. In comparison to the actors during TVB’s golden years, he has a LONG way to go before he is even half as good as the past talents.

1. You cannot compare with last time and now. Because last time dont have much opportunities comparing the era of nowadays. Those actors dont need to work for TVB anymore and TVB is not the only option anymore. And last time dont have internet as well. You dont dream u will even spending time much on the internet during 2000 or before. Nowadays so many opportunities outside of hong kong.

2. Glphan I couldn’t agree more I feel Tvb promotes who ever they want or who ever signs with them so they can have enough sun sungs/ first leading male artist. I feel Tvb might make Ruco the new Raymond Lam or Kevin Cheng cause they might leave Tvb.

1. ………. but at least Ruco Chan acts quite well.

14. I’m a little sick of seeing him all the time. I do like him but a drama every 2 months with him is just too much. Make it look like tvb don’t have any more actors

1. So true that’s what they did with Kate Tse at first now with Ruco cause they are lacking with first leading Sui Sungs and fa dans. Cause the most of the famous ones plan n leavening cause other companies offering a lot more money and rest time compare to Tvb.

2. I’m never sick of seeing this man, he is such a talent!

15. Quality > Quantity

I’m glad TVB is giving him opportunities, but the company is also overexposuring him. Ruco is often cast in small productions or the not-highly-promoted. Yeah, he’s popular among the audience, but he hasn’t secured his status as a first line siu sang. Hopefully, he will be cast in quality productions and paired up with established fadans next time.

16. The Other Truth was definitely his breakout role, but I feel he needs another breakout role to reach “A-list” status with TVB. Maybe Eye in the Sky will be a good opportunity for him since this has a big cast which can help reach higher ratings.

1. AC,
“The Other Truth was definitely his breakout role, but I feel he needs another breakout role to reach “A-list” status with TVB.”

“The Confidant” was a missed opportunity for Ruco. If he had appeared in the series, it would have been good exposure for him in the China market.

“Eye in the Sky” is an important upcoming project for Ruco.

He’s been cast in smaller productions, but hopefully in time, we will see Ruco in series more worthy of his talent.

1. I am still wondering which role was it in The Confidant. I used to think An Dehai but now I feel it could be that silly doctor role played by Raymond Wong. He can’t be the Edwin’s character which would be a waste of his time anyway.

2. Funn,
Definitely An Dehai’s role! Before “The Confidant” started filming, Ruco had mentioned in several interviews that he would appear in the series and he had started reading books to prepare for his role. He said his role would be very masculine and he was trying to understand the psychological state of his character.

But then Ruco got pulled away to anchor another Amy Wong series, “No Good Either Way” after “The Confidant” was delayed from its initial filming date. Ruco couldn’t say no to Amy since she was his talent scout and first producer to cast him in lead role.

17. He has a face to play a good villain guy. Something like Looking Back In Anger type of drama.

1. True but TVB is lacking with top sui sungs so they promote some uncles to it. Tvb need first leading male artists in dramas that a must so they promote people like Ruco.

2. He has a face to play a good villain guy.
——————————————————–
It is not his face, it is his eyes!

18. I love Ruco! But seeing him all the time on TV just get kinda boring lol

19. Love watching Ruco and I will never get bored, no matter which series i just enjoy so much when he is in it! I found his last few series interesting and the producers were trying to imput creativity and sincerity, like GPS, Slow Boat Home and Outbound Love. Their ratings are not high but they were all rising while airing, seriously, none of Ruco’s series rating declined. So I think it is a success. Just that he is still not famous. Although people might say ‘seeing him too much’ but i heard more people saying ‘I want more of ‘Ruco’:)!
Looking forward to Ruse of Engagement and I wish rating soars and I am sure Ruco has again, out his very best and creativity in his acting! add oil Ruco!

1. All Ruco’s dramas have high ratings at the ending episodes: NGEW-37 pts, RC-32 Pts, BK-33 pts. TBB actually knows his good acting and charisma can hold the audience. So, OL was aired on the worse period of the year. Their strategy worked. Same period last year SOL had 17/18 pts lowest and only 26/27 highest. OL’s lowest was 21 pts(on n y eve)and 35 pts highest, much much better. TBB passed the most dangerous period of the year safely. Thank god, I have good memory. My above figures prove that Ruco is getting more and more popular and he’s now HK’s houshold favourite siu sung.
Small productions can make Ruco popular due to his excellent portrayal of character. OL has highest ratings in Canton area for 3 weeks. Ruco has recruited more fans with LKT. So close(subtheme song of OL) has almost 700,000 hitting pts at UT and has been No. 1 in KK box for 2 wks. He’s most popular at the Genting concert. But all these have caused jealousy of other artists fans, he’s now being attacked at forums, and is not surprising that the same thing happens here. When ROE airs, the situation will be worse. But why attack a heartful, talented, hardworking artist who has been struggling for 20 years?

1. ” But why attack a heartful, talented, hardworking artist who has been struggling for 20 years?”

Thx pinky for speaking up for Ruco. He certainly deserves the good things that are starting to come his way after having had to struggle for almost 20 yrs (minus a few years when he was “floating around”) in this business. He never gave up and now, with some success behind him, he continues to give his all in every performance whether in acting or singing and boy, can this man act and sing! He’s certainly not a one-trick pony. To be honest, even as an ardent fan, i had my doubts about OL and LKZ. Although the drama was only so so in terms of plot, Ruco carried off the role of LKZ and gave a multi-layered performance, much like the onion that Aimee referred to in the drama. His popularity is growing by the day and it’s clear that he was the star attraction in the Genting concert (the person to close the show is always the star attraction), can see so many people clamoring to shake his hand. With his growing popularity, he’s naturally the target of attack by jealous fans of other artistes. It’s true, we expect things to get worse when ROE airs.
Btw, what drama is SOL?

2. “But why attack a heartful, talented, hardworking artist who has been struggling for 20 years?”

Because just because you work hard, you struggled, talented and all does not translate to viewers liking and favouring you. Entertainment is a cruel business. If the artist can’t take criticism, good or bad, and even mean spirited one however unjust, perhaps he or she is not suited for this line and should stick to behind the screen jobs or back to 9 to 5 jobs. It is all about the viewers. Win their affection and respect, even if you have no talent and is butt ugly, you have a chance to be A-list. I am sure he isn’t bothered with forums since after a while when that glazed look in his eyes takeover, he is immune to such comments and might even start believing in his own hype. No one can ever remain down to earth forever, hopefully the inevitable change will be delayed much much later.

3. The first part is true. It’s impossible to have everyone liking you, that’s life, especially more so in show business.
Things gonna get uglier when ROE airs. In fact every time Ruco has a new drama, there’ll be crazy haters flooding the tvb.com forum.

“No one can ever remain down to earth forever, hopefully the inevitable change will be delayed much much later”

not necessarily true, depends on the individual.

4. “Things gonna get uglier when ROE airs. In fact every time Ruco has a new drama, there’ll be crazy haters flooding the tvb.com forum.”

Sorry, but had to laugh when I heard mention of tvb.com forum (not laughing at you though so please don’t take offense :-)). That particular forum is always filled with crazies (and it’s not managed either because people run amok in there all the time it seems)….I stopped wasting my precious time on that forum a long time ago (plus it was giving me headache…lol).

Anyway…I like Ruco, but I’m not too keen on TVB airing so many of his series almost back to back because the overexposure is bound to cause some criticism toward him…especially since it’s natural for people to grow annoyed or bored with the same repetitive thing over and over again without much time to ‘rest’ in between. That’s why I feel that the fault lies with TVB for the way they plan their series airing schedule as well as the way they manage their artists’ careers….but unfortunately, majority of the time, the artists are the ones who ‘take the hit’ for it rather than those who are actually in control.

5. llwy12: Sorry, but had to laugh when I heard mention of tvb.com forum (not laughing at you though so please don’t take offense :-)). ————————
Me too. That forum is indeed a lunatic bin filled with crazies. I too stopped going there like years ago.

6. @llwy12

“Sorry, but had to laugh when I heard mention of tvb.com forum (not laughing at you though so please don’t take offense :-)). That particular forum is always filled with crazies”

I had to laugh when i read this too. It’s ironic for you to say so cos every forum has its share of loony bins, including this one.

7. @buzz: Actually, this forum (Jaynestars) is pretty tame compared to tvb.com. At least it’s still possible to have decent conversations with majority of the posters in here (just ignore the crazy ones) — it’s almost impossible to do so at tvb.com…that’s really the difference.

8. @llwy
Forums are visited by all kinds of people. There are sane folks at tvb forum just as there are loonies here. You shldnt tarnish everyone with the same brush.

2. buzz
SOL=Season of Love starring Ken Ma, Myolie, Ron & Kate.

20. I will never get tired of watching Ruco. In fact I only want to watch films in which he is the lead actor

1. I cant get enough of Ruco too. He lights up every drama that he’s in <3

21. honestly, he really deserve it…I am not his fans…but really really like his acting…he is not extremely handsome, but he is okay good looking, really act good…on nice, bad, funny, character…he sing pretty well too, at least better than a lot of singer! Please promote him…again…i am not his fans…I am big fans of LF…but still think Ruco deserve it…I like to see great drama too!

22. I only enjoyed watching The other truth. His other dramas were so boring that I didn’t even bothered watching.

23. He looks so hot!! Handsome and talented, he is TVB Male God!! Please get out Kenneth Ma, Moses Chan and Raymond Lam, losers!

1. i know right? i don’t get the hype about moses chan but of course, this is solely my opinion (just in case this comment angers moses’ fans out there) 😛

2. queenie,
I know, lots of crazy hardcore fans out there. haha.
I know, MC is just unlikable onscreen. I find him very annoying and I don’t watch alot of his series out much TVB these days but i did watch him on that moonlight series, his voice was so annoying and I can NEVER understand why he got so popular. But then again, sometimes it’s really about luck b/c he certainly did not get HOT for his face right? haha LOL

24. I used to be a huge fan of Ruco and still am now!!! <3 but when he came over to sydney and I got to meet him in person, I found him quite cool and unapproachable.

Like mate, crack a smile to your loyal fans and not jst to the paparazzi. But…. I still like him- though I am liking Kenneth a bit more now.

Ahaha btw, he is soooo tanned irl. And I reckon he should stick to acting. His singing moment at the Sydney pageant 2013 was a thumbs down full stop.

1. IMO, he’s a shy guy but he’s not unapproachable or unfriendly. I’ve met him in person a few times and always found him polite and obliging with no airs at all, be it asking for autographs or photos. And i think he’s a nice person to those behind the scenes as well. If you watch the Genting concert clip, right at the last part where they were leaving the stage, Ruco was the only one to acknowledge the 2 backup dancers with a nod to each of them. He didn’t treat them as transparent.
His Genting concert was really good, with high energy performance from him and his voice was really powerful. I think the sound system plays an impt part as does audience participation. Every performer feeds off the audience’s enthusiasm and the crowd at Genting was awesome compared to those lame ducks at the Sydney pageant.

2. ive played a game on stage with both ruco and kenneth at one of the events in Malaysia before … i was on ruco’s team … he was friendly and very polite, he is also very appreciative and he wishes “thank you” sincerely with a firm handshake and direct eye to eye contact, he did not thank just once he even thank a few times with the same gesture during the entire segment, when he did not understand one of the segment he also asked us the team members how to do it and cooperated well … there was another segment where an elderly lady won a lucky draw contest, the stage was made of glass and there was a swimming pool underneath, so after presenting the gift ruco was afraid that she might slip so he followed her behind closely without her knowing to ensure that she does not fall … at the genting concert too, he accompanied Louise Lee closely from behind as she left the stage that even louise have to tell him its alright … of course kenneth was friendly and also funny too, i waved to him during his singing section and he waved back for around 1 minute … ive heard both kenneth and ruco singing one after another on the same night, maybe the song that kenneth sang that night theme song of Life & Times of Sentinal by Steven Ma was too challenging so it didnt sound well, while ruco sang theme song of The Other Truth and it sounded nice … i was at Genting concert too, and both Edwin & Ruco did a very good performance … it was energetic, powerful and perfect rhythmically and melody wise … although sometimes i do agree that certain songs sung by ruco does not sound good, but i think it depends on the type of song, he sound better in fast and powerful songs and some custom-made love songs.

1. yup, i watched the concert. Ruco’s clearly the better performer compared to Edwin. His performance of the solo opening number really blew my mind; never seen him so energetic onstage. He was in top form that night and his voice was strong in the fast as well as slow numbers and he sang with a lot of conviction and enthusiasm, perhaps fueled by his fans’ support for they were all screaming his name throughout his performance. Though Edwin’s choice of mostly slow songs was pleasant to listen to, somehow, his performance of the fast number singing Leslie Cheung’s Big Heat just lacked the energy and oomph of Ruco and his voice was weaker in comparison; it felt almost as if he was restraining himself. It wld be interesting to see Ruco perform this song in his future shows, no doubts that he’ll do justice to this Leslie classic.

25. He can play any role convincingly plus he has good looks appearance, easily to capture viewer’s mind. TVB had Deric Wan in past decades, now they can depend on Ruco to be male lead in heavyweight dramas 😉
