Three Hours of Oceane Zhu Every Night

It’s not a strange sight to see TVB reusing the same actors in their dramas over and over again. Two years ago, veteran Hong Kong actor Law Lok Lam (羅樂林) made it to the international news when he died in five different television dramas that aired in a 24-hour period, shooting off a discussion about how TVB lacks sufficient number of supporting actors in their productions.

The complaint was brought up again earlier this year when veteran actress, Mary Hon (韓馬利), made it to the news about how her characters in both Friendly Fire <女警愛作戰> and Missing You <幸福摩天輪>, which were broadcast on the same days, had the same story arc that dealt with her reuniting with her sons.

TVB’s prime time slot usually contains the broadcast of three local television dramas that air in a row. The first line is usually reserved for family-friendly sitcoms; the second line is reserved for regular serials, while the third and final line is reserved for programs that are classified with a PG (Parental Guidance) rating.

Oceane Zhu (朱璇) is currently starring in all three lines. She has been renewed to a series regular in the first line sitcom, Come Home Love <愛.回家>, since late 2012. Oceane’s starring television drama with Niki Chow (周麗淇), Sergeant Tabloid <女警愛作戰>, is currently airing as a second line serial. Third line serial A Great Way to Care 2 <仁心解碼II>, which features Oceane in a supporting role, premiered earlier last week.

Oscar Leung (梁烈唯) and Matthew Ko (高鈞賢) have also been regularly appearing on television. Both actors are currently being featured in Sergeant Tabloid and A Great Way to Care 2.

Viewers Are Delighted and Confused

Despite Oceane’s poor Cantonese, viewers praised the Beijing-born beauty for her natural acting talent and charisma. However, although Oceane’s scene-stealing performance in Sergeant Tabloid is positively received by critics, featuring her in all three dramas have confused viewers.

Viewers also found it ironic that Oscar Leung, who guest starred as a drug-induced youth in an episode of Sergeant Tabloid, is portraying a psychiatry resident in A Great Way of Care 2. A netizen commented, “He finally got rid of the drugs and came back as a doctor.”

In regards to the reuse of actors, TVB stated that they are aware of the situation and have been working on trying to improve the situation. However, due to the station’s recent staff drain, it has been increasingly difficult to prevent the overlap from occurring.

  1. She’s not a regular in come home love. She’s probably in about 20-25 episodes out of the 220 episodes.

      1. chill. Marianne Chan is a beauty. She got the looks and acting. I miss her 🙁

      2. Yeah Oceane is much prettier. But Marianne was great too, always entertaining and hilarious. Better than most actresses these days.

  2. she’s much better than the current promoted eliza, christine and rebecca. oceane need a bigger role!

    1. she’s better than Eliza coz her acting is more natural + she has a higher and bigger forehead than Eliza, 4 heaven’s sake. The Chinese say that those who have high and rounded foreheads possess the potential for wealth.

She’s far better than Christine because of her acting, again, and her body figure is better than Christine’s.
Is this just me or something, but isn’t it disturbing to see christine running around in Ghetto Justice 2?

I’ve only seen Rebecca once in Silver Spoon Sterling Shackles, but I’m definite to say that at least Oceanne doesn’t have a nose pierce

      1. Christine was terrible in last night’s episode where she is supposed to be upset with Power Chan. It looks like she has to stop after every sentence to breathe. So unnatural.

    2. TOTALLY AGREE! She looks, acts and sounds so much better!! And she is totally hotter than the so called ‘goddesses’ as well.

  3. She’s not very good at acting.. I don’t know if it’s just her squeaky voice but I don’t find her that interesting to watch.

  4. i think she’s very attractive. hope she can improve her cantonese asap…

    1. much better than christine. also better than eliza and rebecca. proving that bad cantonese isn’t a problem if you CAN ACT!

  5. I like her she needs better roles though. There is nothing wrong with her appearing in 3 series at the same time. James Franco is currently starring in Oz and Spring Breakers which are both in theaters right now.

Besides we’ve only seen her about once or twice in AGWTC2 so far

    1. You cant really compare this situation to James Francos. Your not gonna watch the movie after the other right after each other in the theatre.
Her part in The Great Way to Care is really little so far. She was just in a few scene as a nurse. She didnt really have much lines nothing to be confuse about

  6. Actually, it’s only 2 1/2 hours, not 3 since Come Home Love is only half an hour. 😛

I don’t like her character in Come Home Love. Also, I prefer Queenie and Lai Lok Yi to pair up instead of Oceane and Lai Lok Yi.

    1. Disagree with you 😉
I super love her cute and bubbly image in Come Home Love as Ching Ching!
Really hope that the story ended with John Ma with Ching Ching!
She has waited a long long long time to be together with John plus their breakup is because of her stupid brother!

    2. I agree, Queenie and Lai Lok Yi are the highlight of this series. The other characters are boring.

  7. Which episode is Oscar Leung in in Sergeant Tabloid? I have no memory of this at all!

    1. In one of the earlier episodes, it was real brief. He’s the guy who cut Oceane’s character’s neck in the series.

      1. Ah yes, now that you’ve mentioned it! Thank you 🙂

  8. I actually really liked Oceane when I first saw her on screen. She appearance is quite unique, not to mention very beautiful. Her heavy mandarin accent was quite obvious when she first started, but she has improved remarkably imo. And to me, she can act lol. As for how well she can act, it all comes down to getting more experience through portraying roles. Hopes she gets more opportunities in the future!

  9. I want to see her as a lead opposite Ruco. Better than 95pct of the ones being promoted and no her Cantonese doesn’t bother me at all 🙂

  10. The Chinese name of Friendly Fire is wrong! It’s supposed to be 法網狙擊. You accidentally put Sergeant Tabloid’s Chinese name hehe

  11. I remember seeing her in The Life and Times of a Sentinel. My aunt kept praising how beautiful she was, and I agree! I really like her, to be honest.

    1. YAYAYAYAYA!! She is so pretty in that drama! Although she just appears awhile but she did leave me a deep impression!
      She is truly beautiful!

  12. She’s hardly a supporting actress in A Great Way to Care 2. More of a kelefe with a few word dialogue. What a waste!

  13. She is gorgeous. Ocean reminds me a little bit of Shu Qi. They both ooze sensuality and natural charisma, and are very watchable even though their cantonese is heavily accented. lol

  14. So am I the only one who can’t stand her? And seriously, what’s up with TVB using all these new actresses who can’t speak Cantonese? It’s one thing if they can act, but they can’t even do that. C’mon, are you telling me that in a city with 7 million native speakers, you can’t even find a few good actresses? What a joke.

  15. Quit complaining on how some actresses can’t speak proper Cantonese, it’s like discriminating those who can’t speak proper English either. Cantonese is not their native language, they’re still trying. It takes years for as little to a huge improvement. They’re learning a new language, I’m sure most of us went through that process. Besides they’re acting at the same time which is a bit tougher give them a break.

    1. I do agree that perfecting your pronunciation for a new language is hard. However, I feel that they shouldn’t be excused because they’re actors. And most of the time, they’re portraying as Hong Kong locals so it’s part of their job to make their role more believable and deliver with a HK accent. It’s kinda like saying singing is hard and we shouldn’t complain about popular singers who simply can’t sing.

    2. No one is discriminating against them. It’s about hiring or utilizing the right person for the job. It’s not discrimination if you weren’t offered a job at an interview because you lacked the necessary skills. Sorry, “I’m still learning” is not an excuse. At least start them off on lesser watched programs outside of primetime hours until they can improve on the language (AND their acting). Do you see primetime TV here in the states (or wherever) casting actors who speak broken English?

      1. Totally agree!!! Seriously, TVB need to stop promoting all these beauty queens with poor canto. Let them learn their skills and improve outside of prime roles!!!

  16. I don’t care about pronunciation. Christine Kuo and Aimee can speak Cantonese better than Oceane but Oceane can actually act and that’s what’s important to me.

She’s charismatic and gorgeous as well. She’s one of the newcomers (relative) that I support.
